  • French drain and gutter downspouts are important collection and containment systems for storm water runoff. Use of solid PVC pipe is often the most recommended pipe for use when installing these systems, but corrugated can be used and shouldn't be completely overlooked for French drains and gutter downspout drainage. Using corrugated pipe does have its limitations and drawbacks for drainage systems that should be taken into consideration before installing. Below are a few of those draw backs that I think are important.
Ridges - The biggest concern with corrugated pipe are the ridges. They will, over time, impede the flow of debris from the pipe causing it to clog.
Ridges - Once again ridges. Because of the ridges and flexible nature of the pipe it requires a greater fall (pitch) in order to really move water. Compared to solid PVC recommended pitch of 1.5" per 10' section, corrugated pipe requires 3" pitch per 10' section.
Corrugated pipe does offer ease of installment on some job sites, especially those which require piping around objects and structures in the landscape. It also is a cost saving when paying a contractor to install.
