  • Dino’s Tinker Shed, S3 Ep 3, I fix a Ski Doo REV GTX tunnel repair using a brace kit.
In this episode, I will show you how to repair a bent tunnel on a Ski Doo REV chassis. We will look at rivets and rivet guns as well as techniques for straightening aluminum.
Ski Doo REV chassis are known to have a somewhat weak tunnel and can easily bend behind the exhaust can or clutches with even a modest impact. Sometimes this damage can even go unnoticed if it is not that major. Bent tunnels can lead to poor steering geometry, darting and in some cases unstable handling characteristics.
Fortunately, there are reinforcement kits available for the REV chassis that, once straightened will reinforce and align the tunnel to a point that the tunnel is almost as good as new.

Good Video Dino, your so right about rivets, they often save the day on many projects. Looking forward to seeing this snow machine out in the snow.

Excellent Dino, the key to straightening anything is patience, imagination, and the ability to make some tools. After years in a fab shop and just getting a very expensive set of hearing aids the only thing I would suggest is hearing protection. I never wore any before and I paid the price.

Thank you John, very good advice for anyone watching, I sometimes forget to mention things like this and it is very important. Thank you for taking the time to comment and pass on your knowledge and experience.

Great video. We purchased a used 2011 ski doo grand touring and found later it had damage from what appears a low impact hit on the front right side. This video will help us to sort out what to do. Thank you for your work.

I'm glad you found it useful. I found it to be less intimidating once I started, I had quite a few cups of coffee and just took my time, as you saw, it worked out pretty good. Good luck on your repair.

Great job Dino! I don't even have a Ski Doo but your work on it was impressive!

Thank you so much, I had a lot of guidance from my son in law who has done this job a few times. It really is one of those take your time jobs, slowly working the aluminum back into shape. As always thank you for your comment.

Wow I commend you on your composure given the damage you encountered! Glad you are able to perform a fix! I almost bought one of these things back in the day. However this is just another reason why I put up with the weight of a four stroke Yamaha! Built like a tank Won't buy anything else! Good job!

I agree about Yamaha's durability. My first sled was a 1989 exciter 570, loved it. I switched to Skidoo mostly for parts and service availability in my area, but as you may have seen, I'm a four stroke guy now too.
      Thank you for the comment.

A very good video Dino. Not a job to start without a lot of thinking about what is required in terms af material and tools. Good tips regarding clamps and checking fit of rivets and bolts. Using stainless rivets sure requires a gun with good mechanical advantage - air or mechanical. Good vision and clear instructions in your videos.

Thank you Mal, I had a good friend of mine, Markus, who came over and helped to lay out the plan. I really need to put a remote regulator down on my first floor so I can increase line pressure for things like the rivet gun. That is of course another project LOL.

Glad you enjoyed it. I'm not an expert but I love rivets. I may do a stand alone video on them at some point.

Do you recommend this kit of a nun that’s not bent? If I add it and have an impact would it just bent somewhere else?

    • @DinosTinkerShed
      @DinosTinkerShed  Рік тому +1

I would, although you are correct it can move the bend further down the tunnel on a really hard hit, this kit reinforces the weakest areas of the tunnel and makes it much more ridged and impact resistant.

You should get a full 6 piece kit. The weak points are behind the clutches and behind the silencer but the toe holds are also weak on the outside and the upper cross brace on the top under the hood as well as the inside of the nun on both sides under the pipe near the shock towers. If you tweak the clutch side, you can throw off the center to center distance on the clutches and then it will start blowing belts.
