In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm reacting to music by Duran Duran for the first time on the channel. Their 1993 hit Ordinary World is not new to me, but I haven't heard it in many years. It was lovely to return to this poignant and beautiful song...and play along with it a bit. I hope you enjoy!

Ordinary World is one of the most beautiful songs ever made.
I agree - it's one of the greatest songs ever written - for the musicality as well as the lyrics and the message.
Im a massive metal head but secretly love Duran Duran !!!!!!
Secretly? Open your heart to the real music ❤
Dude, truly good music has no genre. I love 60s and early 90s alt rock the most, but have favorites from country to rap.
Same
You are not alone. 🤘
I’m a metal head, but my love for Duran Duran is not a secret.
Duran Duran got inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year. All these years later, they finally got voted in the RRHOF with the fan vote.
Musical hug is the perfect description of this song. Perfect.
Still I can't escape the ghost of you
John Taylor is very underrated as a bassist in most Duran Duran ballads.
Doug thank you so much for taking the time to do justice to this fantastic song. Duran Duran has always been so under rated and channels like yours will keep on keeping good music alive for others to hear. Keep up the great work!
I just wanted to say how I think Duran Duran is very overrated. But i won’t.😉.
We played this song at my dad’s funeral, he lost his best friend at the age of 26, the same then happened to me at 26 and I always think of all 3 of them when I hear this ❤ thank you for analysing this song!
Thank you for writing this. Sorry for your loss. I lost my dad at 25, and adopted my siblings in the wake of that loss. Today in the car I felt the need to play the song for some reason, it always blows me away how music can connect us through these threads.
Warren Cuccurullo was in Zappa's band and Missing Persons prior. He added an interesting pop sensibility to Duran Duran's work - he co-wrote Ordinary World
Hey !!! Are we related ??? 🤔🤔🤔
Yes I think he change these Notorious Wild boys a lot. Zappa's musicians are extra ordinary
Warren was a member of Duran duran and is recognized as such, he is working with them on their newest album Danse Macabre.
No way! Seriously? Can you imagine how difficult it must be to make it to Frank Zappa's band?
"Come Undone" is truly their best song. So groovy uses acoustic basses, drums go crazy. Love them :^)
I remember when that was playing on MTV a lot as a kid and hearing the opening guitar line and thinking wow that's a guitar?! before I ever picked one up
'Come Undone' is excellent. I also really like 'Save A Prayer'.
My #2 favorite Duran Duran song. ("Come Undone") So good! "Planet Earth" will always be my #1. 😊
The bass line was a synth bass line. John Taylor did not actually play on this song.
I can only disagree politely, this song has so much power in the chorus, the melody, and the change of higher notes is magic
I always think of Ordinary World as a new one by Duran Duran. It’s 30 years old. It has one of the simplest guitar solos ever, all on one string, but it’s beautifully in character with the rest of the track.
The is more than one note in the solo.
@@mkbzam You're right. I meant one string. The solo is not all on one string.
A melody don`t have to be complex , the simpler it is , its easier to remember by the masses. If you wanna go complex listen to their rio bass line.
I can't believe this song/album is 30 years old.
This one is special. It's this type of song that transforms huge pop stars into legends.
Duran Duran or so underrated. Saw them in 1984 when I was 21. Seven and the Ragged Tiger Tour.
Such a great GREAT band!
I agree they’re really underrated. The first band I ever saw live, that was in 2011 and they were great
I would love to see them live once. They were my first DVD concert, I got as a present for my 14 birthday... I still love them 😂. This one is among my favorite song ever since I was a child that did not speak or understand English at that time
I went to that concert with my older sister when I was in 5th grade. It was my first Duran Duran concert, but definitely not the last. I see them every chance I get.
This song helped me get through the grief after my mother died of Alzheimer's back in Nov 2003 . It reminded me there is an ordinary world
Full blooded Duranie since ’81
right here.
Happy times. ❤️
I love this song. Having lost my rock Lovin’ daughter in 2022, it makes me think of her. I’m still trying to find the ordinary world - 20 months later.❤️
Best reaction video you actually explain the notes in the song.
Doug seeing you get lost in this song gave me joy! Music is life!
The thing is Simon Le Bon still sounds exactly the same as he did in the 80s just now with abit of a scratchyness to his voice
The way the key changes and the chord progressions reflect the lyrical content, it just all comes together brilliantly for an emotional experience. A masterpiece.
Love the reaction. As an old musician/sound engineer this song checks all the boxes.
The production is so interesting. The orchestration which is probably all synth just swirls in your head creating a melancholy emotion. so beautiful! Really one of the greatest songs of all time!.
7:30 I can feel how nostalgic you are turning in this point :) many songs back in 90' are literally the treasure comparing to new music. They have some magic power bring the tears to your eyes :) love it
My favorite band then and now! My kids grew up on them!! Everyone of them have different musical tastes but they all love Duran Duran!
I’m a Rock/ Metal fan from Canada…. I must say, This is an amazing song!! Great review , I’m now a subscriber… take care and Rock on 🤘🏻
This is some genius song writing by Warren Cuccurullo. The whole song is actually in B major (the c#m at the start of the verse being the II) but it's full of borrowed chords, beautifully voiced extended chords and great guitar work in general.
Warren wrote the song with all members of the band, he didn't do it on his own, DD is one of the great collabs, they all work together, of course Le Bon does all the lyrics.
Rio, Hungry like the wolf, Save a prayer all good songs from Duran Duran
This tune has staying power. You will hear it in shopping malls still in 2050!! ❤😊💛
Shopping malls will be gone by 2050, but I'm sure the AI that replaces humanity will still be listening to Duran Duran.
@@HazardGoat true, but they will feel no emotion. They will be like a race of Spocks
This has always been my favorite Duran Duran song.
This is an ALL TIME after the fame, after the fact, HIT. This is among their greatest jams, and it happened way after their prior last hit song.
Great show ❤ This song came out shortly after my father’s suicide 😢I latched onto it to help cope with the trauma I was going through 🙏
Holy crap 💔💔🙏🙏
Such a beautiful song. Thank you, Doug.
I'm a huge Iron Maiden fan and found your channel thru Maiden Mondays back in the day. However, Duran Duran are a guilty pleasure of mine and are worthy of your time. 🤘
One of the (many) things that intrigues me about this song is the stutter-step rhythm inserted within the steady 4/4 time signature at strategic points in the song. It's almost like a small catch in your throat that might occur when you're struggling to deal with a sad memory. There's so much carefully considered craft in the writing and arrangement of this song.
Good music touches my soul. Thanks to all who make it.
Duran Duran has always been in my heart. ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥🤘🏻🤘🏻
Woow really? One of My favorites songs ever!! Thanx Doug!!
Save a Prayer is another great song to react from DD. Great discussion for harmony and modulation there. People would say Come Undone is great, but would be in third position IMHO.
This was my forever person's favorite band, and whenever I hear this song, I feel like she's here with me once again.
My favorite Duran Duran song. I love this song. Different and more mature, great changes in it. In regular rotation on my playlist. Glad to see you give it your attention!
This song is not just a song. It’s smth above and beyond 💎
Anthem!
The ambience of this song is one of the greatest ever... Simon leBon's vocals accompanied by the guitar sound and drums are truly spectacular.. A masterpiece
Just wanted to say thanks for giving this song a go, Doug! It’s a special one.
Great job in the accompaniment Doug! It is a great song! I remember when it came out and fell in love with Duran Duran. Also their song “Come Undone”. Awesome songs! 💥💥💥
Beautiful song
Best ever Duran Duran song 👍😃👍
Doug, you couldn't have said it any better "A Musical Hug" that's what this song has given me ever since i heard it. Thanks for explaining how chord sequences can effect how you feel as that is just how I feel especially at the guitar solo break....excellent 🙂
Still so timeless after all these years!❤❤❤
One of the best compositions written to date.
You see right away when the song was written with such an emotional purpose that it becomes true.
Love love love your ear. Your perfect pitch. I’m always amazed by your ability to know the key of a piece of music without touching a key/string or anything for clues!
Brilliant! 🙌
I was the first person in USA to advise Duran on stagecraft lighting.
respect for this band was a long time coming, and now they are recognized for their brilliance, it's vindicating! Just saw them last night in minneapolis.
Simply a PERFECT song
Your musical explanation on this great song is fantastic.. Thank you..
Thanks, Doug. Very cool to learn the theory of this amazing song. Yeah, still around indeed. I was in Dublin, Ireland last weekend and noticed a poster for Duran Duran, they're playing in the city this summer. It's so cool to see they're still going strong. Love this song so much and sadly can relate to the theme of it.
The chorus lyrics really spoke to me during the confused early days of the pandemic in 2020
Definitely made me feel better though. This song is truly uplifting
I always liked this song. Fun fact: I never noticed that this is done by Duran Duran.
Listen to their song , "My antarctica" ,It will blow your mind and its melody will remind you of this song.
I really like the surprise/admiration that hits you at 4:03 followed quickly by another at 4:07 with the chord changes. Great song and great to see someone so into music theory be impressed by it.
Love when you improvise over the tune
Brilliant song !!!! 1993
Awesome vid Doug. I'm a huge metalhead but Duran Duran have always been a band I enjoy. When I cut my bass playing teeth in the mid eighties, I was influenced by Steve Harris, Cliff Burton and John Taylor. JT is an immense bass player. Fun fact. He played the same model of bass as Cliff Burton, although in a very different style! Thanks for bringing Duran Duran into the spotlight, a vastly underated band and still producing great music. Keep up the great work!
Fascinating analysis of a great song. I admire your ability to hear it and interpret it so easily.
Not to over focus on Duran Duran, but I'd love to hear your analysis of Come Undone from the same album.
This longer version is far superior to the normal one that’s played on radio or that they perform live. The acoustic solo leading to the electric solo is very powerful.
Always loved this song. Thanks for covering it, Doug!
That was awesome you playing along.High five!
This is my favourite DD song - and is in many ways different to much of their other and earlier material. I am really looking forward to Doug's analysis of what has to be a really interesting piece to analyse, as well as a truly beautiful song as well. And, having finally retired last Friday, I'll get more time at last to catch up with more from Doug in future!
I agree. My favorite Duran Duran song. It is not teenybopper junk and gave all the critics notice that these guys are the real deal.
Great reaction and piano accompaniment to a timeless and amazing song form an entire album that is Pure Fire! One of my favorite records of all time!
SOMEHOW, I only heard this song for the first time the other day. Amazing song
Great analysis, love it.
Great song, thank you for your analysis - this song came out just after my father passed away and helped me enormously as I dealt with that loss. Brings back a lot of melancholic moments for me. Simons voice in this recording is exactly what the song needed, purity and strength. Cheers from Australia!
“Ours is just a little sorrow”… the strings crescendo, and tears yet again, right on cue. This reminds me of several dear friends, dead before their time.
Right behind you, Doug, is "Seconds Out". In 1977 I used to go to the record store as a kid and STARE at that cover having no idea what it sounded like till years later and didn't get into it right away. Core of live Progressive Rock and still downloading bootlegs of that era of Genesis...........
Duran Duran is one of my all time favorite bands. Andy taylor is the reason i picked up the guitar. Do a video on the Powerstation
Ordinary World is just a beautiful song. One of my favorites...
I had a pianist play this for my aunts funeral.
Made this beautiful song incredibly hard to listen to afterwards.
Glad you got around to checking this out Doug.
What a fantastic choice to have played at a funeral, and in a piano arrangement. Would be incredibly beautiful and moving to hear
Condolences for your loss, by the way
Duran duran es una banda muy pero muy profesional y simon un perfeccionistas la banda completa son magníficos ❤❤❤❤❤❤👍👍👍
Excellent video good sir. I love to hear someone with your knowledge breakdown a song the way you did.
I find this song like a poetic becouse it deep, beautiful and reflex about your innerself. Like most of the comments here, its one of the best song ive ever heard.
Impressed. Omg. What a gift to learn by ear so easily. Try my piece little red
I just saw them sept 6th and they are still so amazing
I love Duran Duran! Some of the members were in an “arty” side project called Arcadia, it’d be great to see you react to their music
suggestions would be 'The Promise' 'Rose Arcana' and 'The Flame' from that album
Tremendous bass playing 👏
You know what I just realized? This is very reminiscent of Roxy Music's Avalon days.
The Wedding Album truly is outstanding. Well, save for the mercifully short Shotgun. Every other song is fantastic! I especially like the deeper cuts such as Breath After Breath, Shelter, To Whom It May Concern and Sin of the City. I got to hear Ordinary World before 99% of the US because I heard the debut of the song on BBC radio. Gotta love shortwave radio!
That said, there is one album that, in my view, beats The Wedding Album hands down! That's Meddazaland. A truly phenomenal concept album about the pitfalls of being a celebrity. Beware, because you will sink deeper and deeper into Medazzaland with each subsequent listen! I think this album shows Duran Duran at their most progressive stage. It is very different. I think that's why it was lost on some of the fans. Nevertheless, it truly is worth visiting/revisiting.
This is one of those songs which perfectly represents the complete revolution of musical style which came about as the 80s ended and the 90s began. Duran Duran, huge 80s hit machine, re-invents itself for the 90s with something completely different.
Absolutely beautiful song, something Duran Duran are famous for. A wonderful band I’ve had the pleasure of seeing in concert twice. Great to hear the expansion of your reviews too, thank you! Would love to hear you review more Duran Duran songs, Hold Back The Rain & Proposition would be excellent choices. Also, if you haven’t heard them before, Ultravox would blow your mind👍
Wow Doug, you were in high school, and I was trying to recover from a divorce I didn't want. So for me, the ordinary world I needed to find was the family life I had lost. I did remarry btw, and we will be celebrating our 27th wedding anniversary this year.
My teen crush band! Their music still works too ❤
Doug, I love how you broke down the song on your piano. For musical novices, such as myself it is greatly appreciated.. Thank you! Dave
Keep doing what you were doing. As a musician I love when you break down the chord progressions!!! That's often the most interesting part to me. I find myself doing the same thing, when I hear a song on the radio and try to figure it out. It's a lot of fun! ☺️
Thanks Doug, you always make my day a little better!
You are brilliant. It is amazing to watch you improvise ❤❤
I love it when you play along with the song. I wouldn't mind if you did a series of videos on patreon with you playing. It's cool watching you figure the songs out on the fly
Love the diversity of tunes you cover as well as explaining the harmonic progression. I always learn something from you Sir! Thank you.
Everybody in the 80s reduced the band to a bunch of pretty boys playing bubblegum music. Well, I knew all along that these guys knew what they were doing. This is the real thing. Real talent. Real musicianship. Now, 40+ years later, they finally get the credit they deserve. I am only sad for all of you guys who missed the chance to follow their career, album by album, song by song, tout by tour. Yes, they had the look, but they also had their guitars and their keyboards... Fantastic music. Skin Trade, What Happens Tomorrow, Save A Prayer, Pressure Off, Ordinary World, ... I could go on and on and on and on...
My favorite band from.80s hs years
Doug..you're amazing...
I love this program
Congrats...👏👏👏
Great tune, great analysis and I loved your mini accompaniment, added a wonderful layer. Didn't need it but sounded great with it. 🙏😁
Thanx Doug for this great reaction to one of my fave Duran Duran tracks. It was indeed the restart for them in the 90's and as your analysis proves, they weren't just a cutsie pop band. They had substance and great writing in their tracks as well. You may want to check out "The Chauffeur", "Come Undone", "Drive By" (cover version), "Save A Prayer", "White Lines" (cover version), and the one that started it all: "Planet Earth".
You should hear 'Invisible' from Future Past, they have great substance, they are one of the very few musicians of their era always pushing boundaries, like Bowie, like Prince, I hear songs of theirs from 15, 10 years ago that sound like something on the radio now.
Beautiful song, great chord progression and the production is stellar, so bright and crisp and full
Wow, Doug, I'm pretty much 20 years ahead of you, so now I know why you've not heard some of what I would call, the classics : ) I LOVE the progression used in this song and the choice of melody over it, hauntingly catchy.
