The initial acceleration sound is so bassy, it sounds like it's going to be an 8V71, but once the rpm's are up as it speeds away, it's the familiar 6 sound! For some reason I like when 6's sound as heavy as 8's.
I remember the 3500s that ran out of Gun Hill. I used to take the Bx39 bus to and from school. However, my absolute favorites were the 1990 RTS buses in the 8000s. I believe some were modified by the MTA by giving them a higher idle and some other engine mods. And man when they used to get going , they sounded just like a Chevy 305 small block. I kid you not!!!!
1980 and 1983 San Juan AMA GMC RTS units, the best the first order consist of 126 units replacing 1962 and 1968 GMC New Looks, and part of the 1970 Flxible New Looks, the remaining renumbered to 723XX and 724XX units
Back in the 90's as a kid that how you knew the bus was coming blocks away.
Hope they kept the holes! Sounds like the 2 strokes used by the GMC new look fish bowls! Ahh the child hood memories that come rushing back!
I think those shared the same engines as the fishbowls.

I love that sound. I really miss those buses
Oh hell yeah that's what I'm talkin about RTS 6v71 Detroit diesel power 🤗🤗🤗🤗💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Putting the scream into "Screamin' Jimmy".
I used to hear these as 1981 and 1983 models in NYC a lot. Only NYCTA and MaBSTOA had these. The last hurrah was in 2001....
I wish the NYC/MABSTOA 81s and 83s RTS had 6v92 engines in them
I hear Queens and Staten Island Depots hated those 1981s because they were so Slow going up the Hill (Like FIshbowls) , Some had No-Power Steering

Janesville used those buses back in the 90s and early 2000s. They use new ones now. Different colors and layout.
