While surgical mitral valve replacement or repair and transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) are two well established techniques, Alison Duncan and Lenard Conradi explore the place that transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) now holds.
They describe how and why patients who, for clinical reasons, are not suitable candidates for surgery, and who, for anatomical reasons, are not eligible for TEER either, could be suitable candidates for TMVR, providing concrete examples to illustrate their points.
Finally, they anticipate the future by imagining how this technique, which is still at an early stage of development, will evolve until it becomes a standard.
