Survival Hiking Spear- SOG Spirit Review

- A close encounter with a bear got me thinking about ways that I could defend myself if a wild animal became aggressive towards me. In this episode I'll be sharing my experience, and I'll be testing out the SOG Spirit, which is a type of compact spear. I was impressed with the results, and I think you'll be too.

When I was 16 I signed up to take a hunter safety course in NY. The course is a required prerequisite for a obtaining a hunting license. The instructor was a NYS Conservation officer and very knowledgeable. In asking the students how an what they were intending to hunt, one of the student, who was an African American stated he intended to hunt deer with a spear as he did in his former country. At the time no one in the class had heard of anyone hunting this way in NY, the instructor could not find anything in the NY State hunting handbook that would make it illegal and he issued the license.
Nice vid matey.Am a ex Game Ranger,Hunter and safari guide in Africa and i can tell you that carrying a spear is probably the best thing out there, yes,a rifle is good but if you not a great shot, a spear is better.Never heard of a uninjured healthy predetor impaling itself on a sharp spike and we have some mean predators were i live, believe me. If you are not capable of hitting the head of a charging lion or leopard then better you have a spear and stand your ground.Loads of weekend worriors out there who think they are mean shit cuase they carry a rifle and tend to go to close to dangerous game, a spear gives you the confidence and also the most important of all, Respect! I carry a Massia Spear as my main weapon when walking in the bush and have a 357 magnum revolver(Ruger) as my second line of defence as we have many dangerous animals here that would deff not give a shit for a spear i.e Cape buffalo, hippo, crocs, elephant, rhino etc. Don't know your bears that you guys have but with 45 years of experience in the bush, it is probably the same as here, give them there space, learn there signes and you should be fine.(Injured animals are another story all together thou ) You seem to have that respect mate, well done!
Grandpa always claimed that a bear will never attack a man whose carrying a torch. Especially if he is carrying it fast enough.😉
I don't get it
Now THAT is funny as hell! Your Grandpa must been a really cool guy. and wise too.
@@overratedprogrammer They don't like fire. Especially when that fire (torch) is moving fast, as in running. LOL
The bear was probably using the trail you cut and stumbled appon you by accident. bears are just as lazy as people if they can be.
The spear is a great weapon. I have a couple of the Spirit spears for my own use and they make great gifts to friends. A few thoughts. Firstly, never throw your weapon ever. Not because of archaic laws, but because you never want to be separated from your weapon. Also, instead of using the wooden handles, purchase the fiberglass extendable painter poles. They are exponentially stronger and they can be extended taller than yourself so that it will not rip your face off if you trip and fall. I just stumbled onto your channel and subscribed. Thanks for all of your efforts.
I would not want to trust in a telescoping pole to withstand thrusting/couched attacks, personally. Screw-on extensions, MAYBE
Just two suggestions. 1. Never throw away your primary weapon. With a spear use it as a handheld weapon. 2. It should be about 30cm longer for your height. Great video.
a spear is a very underated survival tool and weapon, I carry a hardwood mop handle and a SOG Spirit in my truck at all times. (not put together of course, freakin California!)
The spear is the easiest hand held weapon to use without a lot of training. Most people can defend themselves easily with a spear.
...as long as you realize it is a slashing and thrusting weapon, and not a throwing weapon
Nice tip about marking the balance point. Thanks for that.
Bears are house cat quiet man! Most of the time they go unnoticed, but could be feet away.
+The Wooded Beardsman Exactly. I'm sure that I've been near other bears before, but was unable to notice them in the muskeg. Scary stuff when I think about it.
OutsideFun1
Scary and reassuring! I've watched bears before and you really do not hear them coming in and when they are right there in front of you, they barely make a sound. So that right there tells me I could easily walk right past a bear without knowing it. They are much like deer and can be very sneaky when they want to. It's something we should all pay attention to, especially when we're out around them. They certainly like the thick stuff too!
cool video! I've seen those for sale in a lot of our sporting goods stores. I've thought a lot about buying one. thanks for another great video!
Spear is a pretty good defense against TWO legged preditors too.
Not an enraged moose tho.
Moose. *Shudder*
I wouldn't want to piss of a moose with anything less than a good rifle, honestly. They're scary as hell. I've read they're more dangerous than grizzly.
Iacomus Lycanthropus spears are my favorite outdoor tool just kinda looks weird but this is perfect cuz you can just add the stick
They kill grizzly bears with spears ....you can kill a moose too.
@@ghostwriter8631 lol good luck the moose will win
@@williamparker6678 how do you think the natives survived there for thousands of years? with guns and bear spray? no, they used spears and bows. if the moose would win then they wouldnt have survived.
My tip is that you need a longer stic above your head so if you fal you dont fal in your own spear
Cold steel Bushman is one of the toughest for the money to make a spear!!!
I would never walk with that spear without putting the sheath on it. VERY Dangerous. Especially in deep snow. I just got my Spirit today. Ultra cool!!
Hm, how strong is a broom handle really though?
The idea is that he could make his own. The dude obviously isn't afraid enough from that bear encounter anyway, if he was he would've gotten a gun of course but i guess he could put the broom handle over a fire to harden it
Nice review.
I heard an expert on CBC Radio some time ago who stated that there has never been a fatal bear attack in Canada where the person was carrying bear spray. Of course there could be other factors involved ie: the people who carry bear spray are very likely to be the type to take other precautions such as noise makers, bear bells, proper wilderness food handling, etc. But either way, all I know is that if I'm going out to the woods...I'm carrying mothe****ing bear spray :)
I normally walk around the Forrest in hoplite gear , shield, and spear. Unstoppable force in bear country
thanks great informational video
Dude, those last couple of throws were nice. I've considered the same defensive weapon here in California.
I'd rather use a gun but spears have been used for centuries for a reason.
From California very true hahaha
Jah Reigns
that's spelled commiefornia
Cool, I came to the same conclusion and am making something similar. Just stumbled on your video in the process.
Am making mine to protect against a crazy fox or angry wild boar.
Great video! Your story was very entertaining.
+Pierre Thanks Pierre!
Nice, what do you think of taking the metal part of the broom stick of and attaching a tropical hardwood stick on it, basically one foot tall than yourself. Would be a great upgrade..
Good review, though. Thanks. I have been wanting to get one of these.
Very cool spear!
Great video man didn't know you could just screw it on to a broom handle .
The fur on the bottom of the bear’s feet make it nearly impossible to hear them. Even in dry leaves. Plus, their fur does not reflect light, so on a dark night, you might not see it even if you’re pointing your flashlight directly at it.
Did that come down double edged from the factory or did you sharper up the other side. I bought one of those from big 5 a while back and it was only sharpened on one side. Also, is it legal to carry a double edged blade in Canada?
A $100 single shot 12 gauge that weighs 5 lbs is about a million times better than a spear for last ditch bear defense. I'm looking up this SOG spear because I just did active shooter training in a gun free institution and was thinking it might extend defensive capability in that context. But if I'm I can carry a gun in a dangerous place, I'm carrying a goddamned gun. There's really no comparison. In the Grizzly Maze, I'm toting a Mossy 590 or something with an extended mag and alternating Brenneke slugs and buckshot. No rules out there.
you should consider some type of cross guard near the head of the spear. i do not know about bears but i do know that hogs will occasionally push past a spear head down the shaft to get to the person holding the spear. this is why most boar spears have a cross guard to stop the animal a distance from you.
also if your shaft were about a foot longer than you are tall it is safer so that if you fall there is less chance of landing on the pointy parts.
In my part of the world spear is the traditional weapon for bear hunting. I would not attempt this myself though... :)
Thanks for the review - Martin
+NorwegianWoods lol Neither would I. Thanks again for watching!
If you farted in the woods you told the bear there might be something to eat shortly
great video!!
Seems like you have a great throw to me. Good video 👍
for the spear you need to consider some sort of stout cross bar a bit behind the spear head ( this would prevent "run up" on the spear shaft) medieval boar and sometimes bear spears seemed to usually have this feature. thank you good video
northern ontario? yeah i lived there a few years XD i live in the Moosecree reserve (moose factory). the bush was tight over there..
10:33 Reminded me to Rue's death in Hunger Games hahahaha
bear spray would be a good back up a firearm at that range would just piss them off i also recommend getting a shaft taller then you are in case you fall that way theres less chance of impaling yourself
What weapon would i like to have? .44 Magnum would be my choice :)
+Samon lol
The spirit wouldn't do annything but piss most bears off unless you got a lucky throat hit. Bear spray is 120% more effective.
But yes, spear hunting is legal in 90% of u.s. states. I don't know about canada.
It'll kill a black bear. Sever a major artery and any animal will bleed out within minutes. Black bears aren't very aggressive, and when they do attack humans it's rarely fatal.
Pretty cool ! I'm now thinking of forging a spear head . (When I go primitive , I really go primitive Lolol)
Oh yea, this is going to be good! I need a walking stick/spear...got surrounded by a pack of feral dogs while walking our two dogs. Fortunately, my male was bigger and more confident than any of the ferals and when the timing was right, lunged at the pack leader scaring it off and defusing the situation.
Great idea
+2.67 Acre Homestead Thanks!
I’m planning to make myself a hiking spear. Not only would it help against predators, but if you encounter a deer, elk, moose, cow, horse, hog, javelina, or other sizable animal that decides to charge you, that several feet of range you get might save your life.
a fully grown mountain lion charged me at full speed a few nights ago…. Hence looking into spear option . Thanks for info.
Cold steel bushman is a better choice for a bear but the spirit is good for smaller game i own both, however bear spray should be part of your kit.
Like it. Think l will get this. Thanks
is the part the broom handle threads into steel,or plastic
That's great!
SOG needs to put a hard plastic sheath on that spear, with gold retention. That way, you can hike with the spear tip on, and not have to worry about falling and potentially impaling yourself.
Bears swipe and could snap a spear shaft easily. A spear is better than nothing (especially were you can’t carry a gun) but a .357 magnum revolver would be a lot less to carry and a LOT more comfort. Not to mention you can still use it as a deterrent for a bear by firing a warning shot if the situation allows.
Just and idea , If you are going to use it for a walking stick . Go to a drugs and look in the section where they have the canes and walkers and buy a light weigh rubber cane foot and put on the bottom of your stick . To keep from damaging the end and also gives you some traction for grip . Also you can go to a medical supply place and buy the rubber feet there also . Also from my studies on spears the length from the spear shaft should be 1 foot above your head for best use. And should be made from hickory. But the broom handle was a good idea . Also go to JAS.Townsend and Co . And check out there spear tips . They have model there's after the 1800's model spear tips that the colonial people used back then . Good video.
+3flashcan lol Oh man, I misread your comment there for a sec. I thought you wrote: 'If you are going to use it for a walking stick, go do drugs and use a cane or walker..." Skim reading didn't pay off there. Anyway, thanks for watching and commenting!
I thought I had a solution right away by telling you to remove the french bread you have strapped to your back .
The spear tip is good but u wanna watch the handle that came with it, I had one a few years back and the packaging advertised it as a throwing knife so I threw it and the handle snapped and launched the spear tip back at me and it landed less than an inch from my foot
hows the cabin coming along???
Have you considered making and using a spear thrower (atlatl)?
+Chris Gadarowski I haven't up until now, but I'll look into it. Thanks for the suggestion!
Very cool
+phxtonash Thanks!
You should use a cap gun
freedom is a light for which many have died in darkness
Very good idea using a spear , tho any time I've gone hunting I carry a cold steel katana , my friends thought I was nuts for carrying one till one day when me and one of my friends was hurting a very nasty wolverine charged at us and I pinned it to the ground with my sword my friend shot it I think it was rabies the way it acted anyway a spear is a good idea to carry though thx for the good video.
I'm a bigger guy. I've walked alone in the woods and have heard a predator of some kind following me.
I suspect it was a bear although where I am at cougar is sighted scores more.
I agree with the spear. I have heard of a big cat hunter that used a spear to counter jaguar's charge.
How about a $50 Orion flare gun? It would scare a bear, it will also shoot thru 1/4 " thick plywood board so it can be used offensively against mr.bear and you can also signal help. The Orion flare gun is orange and it fire 12 gauge flares, the gun comes with four I think.
I thought of this and had to reject the idea due to lighting the forest on fire. However, I think road flares ARE a great idea; Orion has a zippered case for a 6-pack.
In the future I hope you can post a video of you surviving a bear attack with a spear head that small. And yes, the Bear falling on his own wieght and dying before you do is a good hipothasis as shown in the Film PathFinder starring Carl Urban and MoonBlood.
What about a spear with two powerful cross bows cocked and attached to the sides to numb the bear down increasing your chances of survival?
You've never seen a black bear have you?
Where abouts are you from bud. Looks like my area. Anyway cool video bud.
bud
OMG I just woke up did he show us the spear
No...the bear ate him. You missed it.
What bag do you have on?
Colt 1860 army .457 a good bear banger
Where did u get ur handle
Looks nice bud more like a javelin then a spear but still cool
Just a word, but when you're down to your last weapon, don't throw it away. Learn to wield it as a handheld weapon because with a large predator, two or four footed variety, might take more than one wound to put down.
snap it, close it, fasten it.
Cold steel has good spears plus their all steel bushman hollow handle knife douldes as a spear head.
The bear was happy. You were making him a highway, and an easy ambush sight if he needed to hunt something instead of just forage, Not to say that somewhere in his head he wasn't thinking, I wonder how he'd taste. I do carry a side arm, in warmer weather it has a couple rounds of snake shot as well and normal rounds
+billyoerg My path definitely became an animal highway after I carved it out: moose, lynx, bear, grouse. They all travelled my path. Anyway, I'm glad the bear decided to move on. But I often do wonder what was going through his head.
LOL YOU WHERE MAKING A BEAR HIGHWAY
For the Penan tribe in Sarawak they use their blowpipe as a spear...
Don't trip while walking with that spear or it's bye bye eye.😁
+Liam McKernan That's why it comes with a sheath my friend.
+OutsideFun1 lol
It is better to hold firmly to a spear and STAB from a distance rather than throwing it away! Life is not a Hollywood movie.
Now I've never heard of that, "do up"?. Just be a Canadian thing. great video. you throw that thing very good.
+Cory Boyd Oh yeah? Huh. lol Interesting. What do people say in your area in place of that term?
Friggin moose. Moose scare the shit out of me. I mean, bears ... yeah ... caution is indicated lol ... but an enraged moose ... words are inadequate.
Should get a cold steel boar spear. That little thing won't stop a bear.
NEVER Disarm Yourself, Turkey!
nothing works better than a proper pepper spray 🌶
Ps. For your own safety the spear should be taller than you when you are going to use it as walking stick. It’s really important. The risk caused by short spear is way greater than encouraging bears.
Cold steel maa spears are worth every penny.
the young man's arguments are sound and logical, by the way a form of a spear, so-called "rogatina" was routinely used by both Poles and Russians to hunt brown bears, sometimes even moose. It's application requires bravery, strength, some skill, so it is a risky endeavor. Now driving in LA is extreeeeeemely risky, much more risky with all idiots around You........
now one remark though, I would NEVER try to throw it at a bear / lion / serious predator unless I have a couple more........
Isn't an injured bear even more dangerous than a normal bear? I belive this applies also to big predators, as cougars. So, I don't believe it is a good thing to throw the weapon and be unarmed just after, to confront the furious beast with bare hands. I imagine the spear should be used to keep the animal at distance, and to scare it, in the case os cougars, monkeys and wild pigs. Confrontation must me in any case a very last resort, especially without a fire weapon. I am in Brazil, and I use to bivouac solo in a subtropical mountainous area, were there are monkeys, wild pigs, cougars and even, but rarelly, jaguars. So I allways carry with me cougar spray, that is also effective against other animals. I am thinking about the spear, but just to have something else to keep me more confident at night ;)
A 44 mag or a 12 gauge is my bear spray of choice.
Fun fact: bear spray is proven to be an objectively better bear deterent than any gun.
+Outdoor Alchemy lol
Fun fact: bear spray isn't a better deterrent than a rocket launcher, so no, not better than any gun.
what would happen if you didn't threaten the bear? would it have attacked you?
Probably not, bears are rarely violent towards humans, they have a natural fear.
That would hurt.
TU !
ENJOY....THE SIMPLE LIFE
+Wolf Travels2 Thanks again my friend!
A shotgun wouldn't be a bad idea even if it's a single shot 12 gauge there cheap and It will get the job done you can rest assure that slug with stop the bear I would feel safe that route but that spear is a good objective weapon as well
The cold steel bushman would of probably been a better deal
you NEED to check wt the local state game commission , in most USA states it is NOT legal to hunt game with a spear.
Bullcrap!!! Many people hunt with Spears in the states!!!
Never seen one of those for sale , cool , I may get one someday . I was always taught when in the bush , respect a dangerous animal and it'll respect you and often did not carry any sort of defense other than an axe . As a trapper ( not anymore ) , a Hunter , fisherman , and a desire for the outdoors , I have SWAYED from those teachings I was taught as a kid ; After being attacked by 2 insane bears at the same time . Here's my New theory : ) ----- Bear spray has an expiration date on it , My bullets and a well oiled gun doesn't ( Sorry , I meant to say gunS ) :-) I won't lie , it took 10 years off my life and put the fear in me , AND , those 2 bears don't walk this earth anymore !!! I now carry , Two , well oiled , fully loaded guns in that region when I am out . Well , I hope you never need to use that spear , but there is comfort in carrying some sort of defense system . By the way , some nice throws you did !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Always like to see one of your vids come up ! Cheers my friend .
+cyril brun Yikes! An experience like that would put the fear in me too! Glad you're around to tell the tale. Guns will always be the superior choice by far. There's no denying that. Thanks for watching, and commenting!
why do you not carry guns?
SOG Spear-It?
I just carry a big 8" Ruger Redhawk around in a chest holster if I am worried about bears. Why not carry a gun? American bushwhackers have been carrying guns around for hundreds of years. I've seen bears around my property and they've seen me, but they never seem very interested in me. Lots of berries to eat and animals for them to predate on around here, so they are not to ornery.
You need to add more to your length...and make it out of stronger wood.
Just one criticism, an animal is not going to use it's weight and throw itself on to the end of your spear. You must use the spear to thrust at the animal. Unless that animal is jumping on top of you from the trees, it will be awfully hard to make it use it's weight to kill itself willingly.
The video actually starts at the 5:50 mark
Not my first choice if a thousand pound animal with very thick hide, fur, muscle and bone with teeth and claws is charging me. I'll stick with my ruger super redhawk 44 magnum.
You go ahead and bring that as your primary defense. I'll stick with a 12g slug and eat bear for dinner.
