Sally’s parents do such a great job at IMMEDIATELY making us understand why Sally is such a mess. A mother who refuses to respect her emotions (no matter how justified or reasonable they are), and a father who refuses to respect her adulthood (by treating even the most horrific trauma like she’s a little girl who just had a bad day at school).
@@aSSGoblin1488 Eh, not really. Sally is the *opposite* of her mom in a lot of ways. Her mom dismisses emotions as irrelevant, while Sally often puts too MUCH importance on emotions. Her mom has no interest in encouraging or appeasing her romantic partner, while Sally's shown herself to often go too FAR in attempting to appease and accommodate her boyfriends (hence the abuse). You're right that both of them can be selfish, but I think they arrive at the selfishness for very different reasons.
it's hard to think of another show that tonally and emotionally ends in such a wildly different place from where it began. also everyone is acting their asses off this season.
@@SidPhoenix2211 yeah good point, he thinks it's something he can achieve through simple actions, when in reality the problem is in his head and his thoughts
Well self-preservation is also a hell of a drug. People are capable of a lot more than theh think because they've never been tested by their environment like Barry.
While season 4 is not my favorite, I gotta give Berg and Hader a ton of credit for never being conventional with Barry's story. Especially during season 2, it could easily have just become a series where he keeps barely keeping his real self a secret and it's all fun and silly. But we start to see the mental effects of his choices pretty quickly and it's rarely fun past a certain point. And then it all culminates in this absolute fever dream of a season
Slightly perplexed by the approach to Barry being, 'I don't feel like he's really a bad guy'. I know the show writes him as a sympathetic character. But he's basically a mass murderer. How can there be any doubt that he's fundamentally a bad guy?
When people see Sally's mom's reaction they all seem to forget the Sally they saw (and hated) from season 1; self-absorbed, over-dramatic, neglectful of those around her, self-serving, which is to say somewhat narcissistic. Not to say her mom is perfect, her mom's reaction appears to show a weariness for Sally's chronic personality faults. Now her dismissal of Sally's experience is to the same magnitude as Sally's dismissal of other's experience. If you've ever been around an overly-dramatic, self-absorbed, narcissist...you know.

Sally is the younger version of her mom. Self involved only more older and set in her way

@@aSSGoblin1488 I'd say Sally's actually more a foil for Gene. As the latter is more less the former with time and age.
Bill Hader showed everyone he's one hell of a director with this season. Absolute brilliance all around.
Yeah can barely believe it made it to TV. Very audacious.
@@TheDemonicPenguinTwin Peaks: The Return levels of subversion haha
I’ve heard Bill Hader wants to direct a horror movie. This season especially makes me think he’d pull it off spectacularly.

Just in a few short scenes, Sally's mother cemented herself into the "worst mothers on TV shows" list
This season really leans into surrealism and I enjoy the hell out of it.
Barry's desperate desire to be a good person breaks my heart.
He wants to be good without really doing the proper work for it, with proper dedication to it. He wants to be good, on easy mode lol

"Mr. Cousineau, are you mad at me 🥺?" Is just fucking hilarious
I took it as more sad than anything.
Dude has just completely devolved to a child
For me it was "Did you trick me?"
@@bigpictureguys8415oh it is sad for sure, but also funny. the show hits that tone a fair bit lol

I really wish my old man could've made it to this final season because this one is a wild ass ride!

Yeah Sally and Sally's mom are kind of a chicken or the egg thing. I tend to assume more responsibility on the parents though for obvious reasons.
