Underrated Ship No More! The UK Type 31 Has Evolved Into a Ship to be Reckoned With

- Originally designed as global patrol frigates, the UK's Type 31 has evolved into a platform capable of conducting the full range of surface attack capabilities, following the announcement that the Type 31 small frigate would be equipped with the 'Greatest' Mark 41 Vertical Launch System.
So, how great is this Mk41 VLS? - Наука та технологія
Build 12 units.
With the MK41 VLS cells, it is a capable, affordable ship.
With all originally ordered 5 units targeted be in the water by 2028 it would be prudent to simply keep the production line running.
I agree. That would allow available T26 and T45 (ultimately transitioning to T83) to be dedicated to carrier escort duty with T31 being the genuinely credible “warship” presence where Rivers are sometimes asked to do stuff that is really a bit beyond their design parameters.
Everything about the T32 project all a bit vague (to say the least!) including whether it’s still moving forward at all but if there is a realistic budget even provisionally allocated to that project then that should fund at least 5 of those extra 7 T31 you suggest and maybe more if any provisional T32 budget includes new design costs and additional cost/contingency for getting production up and running on a new design vs keeping production running on an existing design. The budget for design and a 5-build on a new class might even fully cover the cost of a 7-build run-on of the T31 production line.
The RN does need to fix its recruitment and personnel retention issues if we (the UK) are going to have any chance of crewing and maintaining such a fleet though.
With 32 MK41 VLS cells, and 48 Seaceptors, this is a really capable ship, and, they are coming in at a very good price; £ 1.5 Billion for 5 ships ( theoretically)
Build 12 units.
I wouldn’t hold your breath for 48 Seaceptor in addition to the 32 MK41. That’s something I’d love to see but another possibility is that the only VLS silo is the 32 x MK41 and some tubes are used to quad-pack Seaceptor. I’m not saying that will happen, just saying it is a distinct possibility. On the plus side, another possibility re T31 armament is that some NSM canister launchers get cross-decked from T23 as those go out of service to give T31 some additional medium-scale anti-ship capability without needing to allocate any MK41 tubes for that.
With what sailors, are recruiters are so bad that only 25% who apply ever get to Basic Training.
@@EnglishScripter ship run at 1/3 active, 1/3 in maintenance, 1/3 on stand by. He crews, much like a Boeing or Airbus jumbo jet, simply move from ship to ship as required.
The Mk41 is replacing the mushroom farm, not in addition. So, 32 cells total. Still though, means they can have a load out of say 26x FC/ASW and 24x Sea Ceptor, or 22x FC/ASW and 40x Sea Ceptor. That's a very good load out.
@@Axispaw1 That’s my understanding/assumption too - MK41 as the sole VLS silo which, as you say, still gives an impressive and flexible load out especially when compared to the fears at one point that there might be a mere 12 Sea Ceptor! I have a couple of questions that I’m wondering if you have answers for, or informed opinions…
- Has the 32 number actually been confirmed for the MK41 silo? All I’ve seen is the intention to fit MK41 with no actual number given but it is entirely possible that I missed one or more subsequent more detailed announcements. And on a similar note I think (and hope) that it’s pretty safe to assume that the MK41 will be full strike length but has that been explicitly confirmed anywhere?
- What do you think will happen to NSM as the T23 go out of service. Are they truly an interim solution that will be sold on once FC/ASW comes into service or might they get cross-decked somewhere? If yes then what are your thoughts on where?
The Pohjanmaa-class is the smallest warship that can acommodate the strike length Mk.41 VLS..
A corvette, probably: the Pohjanmaa-class corvette expected for the Finnish Navy from around the mid-2020s. Its length will 104m, and a displacement of over 3,000 tonnes will make it one of the largest corvettes, but arguably not quite frigate sized.
The Mk 41 VLS comes in three sizes/lengths: self-defense, tactical and strike. No other corvette has any Mk 41 VLS modules, not even the self-defence length; nevertheless an export request was made to the US (and granted) for a strike-length 8 cell VLS for each of the planned four Pohjanmaa corvettes.
Yep, while the T31s are, i.i.r.c, significantly bigger than the last actually fully armed class of frigates, the old T23s. Though of course our loathsome London establishment have had to be pressured remorselessly to concede even this borderline armament fit for the new ships.
With the upgrade in silo's these could even be part of the battle group.
IF our London establishment vermin ever do actually allow the T41 VLS cells to be fitted at all. Just listen to the scum's get-out reported here at the end of this vid.
"..with FUTURE ships in class incorporating the mk41 during the construction phase. The EARLIER designed vessels"... [IE; the 1st batch of five which in reality will be the ONLY ones ever built for the RN]... "would then have the mk41 fitted at a later date, during the capability upgrade phase undertaken HALF WAY THROUGH THE INITIAL SERVICE LIFE. Usually around 10 TO 12 YEARS"
Or put simply, like the six T45s these are still to be at most half-armed i.a.w. our repugnant political and civil service's beloved F.F.B.N.W. (Fitted For But Not With) lie. A phrase that in truth, always really means (FIBBED we'll FIT it eventually, BUT NEVER WILL).
And that's exactly what will happen. The promised upgrade will simply never be undertaken.
These pretend GPFs which will really still just be giant, hugely under-armed OPVs, will never be suitable to serve in a real battle group without endangering the lives of their own crews if they ever need to go into combat with a near-peer adversary.
All Royal Navy ships are not to be reckoned with. The Royal Navy remains the best-trained naval force today. The RN always outperforms expectations based on the equipment available and today the RN has some of the most capable warships in existence. The Type 45's are standout ships of their respective class.
Good, now spend some crumbs and build 50. Parliament coughed up half a trillion pounds to pay for their own imposed lockdown of the British economy. Britain is 6th richest country in the world. 20 billion pounds is a pittance for 50 relatively good ships, and the jobs they'd create would pay for the cost longterm. In short term either tariff China or cut welfare for a change to build the ships.
Amen to that 😂
Yes, the 32 x T41 VLS have saved the T31s from ending up merely as yet more absurd "FFBNW"-afflicted de facto RN giant OPVs and not real top tier combat-capable GPFs. Even so, it's borderline as 32 cells is the bare minimum for a ship of this size and other serious deficits of course remain unaddressed by our loathsome, cheese-paring London establishment trash.
Get them installed from first thing . The RN needs the capability . We have too many ships that are just hulls (sitting ducks) with potential to have things fitted …..but rarely are . Just another politicians to keep to pretend we have capability
after they have been delivered hahahahahah
Its like putting 22 inch rims on a wheelybin.
Listen to our civil service vermin's cop out reported at the end of this vid. THESE WHEELYBINS WILL NEVER ACTUALLY SEE A SINGLE STRIKE LENGTH T41 BE INSTALLED ANYWAY.
You're not Frankie Boyle 😂
@@Axispaw1 🤣 *Homer Simpson retreat into hedge*
Who write this nonsense. The Type 31 has no missile purcurement at all and won't stop sensentalising it
