No. You got it all wrong. It's a circle. At the begining, you see a shooting star. This star is someone like you who reached the top of the mountain. You decide to go where it came from. When you reach the top of the mountain, you become a shooting star, and thus, inspire the next person who sees you to start a journey. It's beautiful...
One of three games that had brought me to tears, and the first video game to make me cry. I had a companion. It was apparently obvious that neither of us had previously played the game. Somehow, we found most of the secrets, and a good few scarf upgrades. When he got absolutely REKT by a Guardian, I couldn't stop laughing. I could imagine his(or her) reaction when the same happened to me. Then the death scene. We were walking, and my companion got slower and slower. He was in front of me, and collapsed. I stood over the body for a good ten seconds in disbelief. I kept pinging him, our system of trying to bring attention to something. He wouldn't respond. Then I took three steps and died as well. I was really blown away, emotionally charged in a way I had never been before. I was about to quit the game, until we were resurrected and flown to the mountain, him in front of me. I explored, and he went straight to the peak. I found him there, waiting for me at the edge of the light. We both walked in together. When the credits started playing I realized that I was bawling my eyes out. I could never have guessed that I would feel so emotionally attached to not only a video game, but to a person I had both never met or even spoken to. I was crying not just at the beauty of the game, but I also realized that I would never meet my friend again. I'm still trying to get my parents to play it. 10/10 would cry again oh and the music is awesome
My first time playing with this game, I had one companion the whole time through. We both found secrets and scarf upgrades together and both lost most of the upgrades to the Guardians. For some reason, I didn't collapse as soon as he did, but kept walking for about 10 seconds longer. Seeing him die after all we had been though and knowing I was next. Seeing me die. Then that whole beautiful sequence where we fly up the the peak of that mountain where we just flew around each other in happiness nearly brought me to tears. This game is perfect.
MystiCoder Well most the time I collapse at the same time as my partner but remain upright on my knees a little longer. This time I actually continued on for a few seconds.
omg I had the same experience with another player. I just purchased the game and was ofcourse wearing the red robe. I met a player that had that awesome white robe with a long LONG scarf. It was beautiful. We met and did the whole journey together. She showed me all these amazing secrets and where to get the extra pieces to the scarf. I can't tell you how many times we pressed the circle button to communicate with each other. We danced around each other and meditated with one another. And then when we finally rose to the sky I thought I lost her. I only saw my character and I was descending to the ground. I tried to fly but it got difficult going up. Finally, the white robe player came out of no where and literally saved my ass from going down any further. My brother (who was watching) and I screamed "YEEAAAAAAHHH!". We flew to the mountain top and started drawing hearts in the snow and basically played and fooled around. Best journey ever. I tried doing journeys with other players but there will never be one that I was so in sync with and occupied as much as the white robe.
This is pure Art. Whatever society thinks, this is pure poetry, it's touching, sweet and deep, it tells an amazingly beautiful story and brings us to a wonderful world. It's Art.
Yes. Sky ruined it, unfortunately. ThatGameCompany have not released anything related to Journey after this. I fear they may have forgotten. Sky is not good, with its constant updates, internet connection requirement, and nametags.
"What exactly do you do in Journey, like what's it about?" "Well, your character starts out in a desert and tries to get to a mountain, and then you find God." "So your character is just trying to find god?" "No. Your character is trying to get to the top of the mountain. You are the one who finds God."
I remember when I played this game through for the first time. At the last moment I had a partner with me. We walked side by side up the snowy mountain. We tried to 'sing' to each other, but our characters were too tired to make any sound anymore. Their character fell down before mine did. It was so sad, I cried..
This game just makes everyone so emotional, I never even played it, I just watched playthroughs and this, seriously, is the most perfect and poetic game ever made. Nothing compares, even the best poets can't make me that emotional. It's just absolutely magic
First time I completed this, I cried like a baby and laughed like an idiot. Probably the best game I have ever played, and one of the only reasons I bought a PS3.
There's a beautiful community still supporting Journey and thankfully they keep the servers up and running on all released platforms. The day that ends is a day I will be very sad to see.
I just played it for the first time yesterday...by the end I was sobbing silently with tears streaming down my face. I didnt even understand why at first. It was like it spoke to my soul without my head really needing to see the logic. It is such a beautiful, soul enriching experience, if u just give urself to it!
I just heard about this game and being impatient typical me i decided to jump straight to the ending, i don't even know the story for this game but yet for some reason it brought tears to my eyes.
I didn't even play this game...but I understood it perfectly, and as I understood it, I couldn't help, but cry. Cry as I never did before. This game represents life as we live it. It depicts our good and bad moments, as It also depicts friendship and companion, as we wouldn't be nothing alone. It represents the times when the problems are so big that the only thing we think about is giving up and stop trying. You see others fall. You see the ones you love saying goodbye, but you raise up before your fears and sorrows and leave your mark here at Earth...while you walk to the only unevitable ending point. The point where the mission is accomplished in this realm...then you raise up, sky high...to be part of the universe, not as a human anymore...but as memories...memories that will have other people guided by it, by the mark you leave while a living being. It's about birth...living...and death.
Illya Benkard actually you were right... but the game talks about life and "afterlife"... the ending part it's you (the character) getting to the end of your journey and welcoming afterlife
The feeling of absolute joy, warmth, light and sweet sorrow. I've never felt anything like that. I want to believe that's what will happen to me after death.
Exactly. The point in the last stage where you break free of the water and fly among the jellyfish, where the music rises, having a companion to weave in and out with and fly to the crevice... No game has ever made me cry harder than the first time I completed my journey. No game :')
Just played through the game for the first time. I don't know who my friend was, but I'm glad we passed into the light together. I've never been so enthralled with a journey until I played Journey. What a marvelous connection between people it forms.
Think of it this way: It's the moment you realize that, you do trascend to another plane into existence. The journey, is to enjoy all the moments, places and experiences you may encounter thru' your life. Notice he dies [i think], when he gets to the top, to come back to life by the white dudes [which might be the ones that were able to trascend]. Your soul, is the one that gets over to the mountain top, because you, there, have no need to fly enymore, your scarf was removed, your soul does not belong to this world, yet; this game also talks about reincarnation, and do the things you did not do when you wre alive [is like a second chance], and see, enjoy and look at all the things you did not in that first travel you had. This game, also talks about a paradox, there's a point in which, you see a star coming out from the mountain while you're still in the desert, which might be you [or not, i dont know]. This game is art, this game is the above and beyond of all games so far.
The beauty of this game is its simplicity. No words, written or spoken, and only 3 mechanics: running, jumping/flying, and pinging. The emotion that you feel while gliding across the golden sand, spinning around in circles with your companion, trudging through a blizzard, soaring through the air amongst hundreds of cloth creatures, hiding from the guardians, and blasting through the storm to reach the top of the mountain (which you don't really know why you're heading to it in the first place) is exhilarating. You will feel happiness, anger, loneliness, sadness, desperation, hope, relief, grief, and so much more. Regardless of what's at the top of the mountain, it's all about the JOURNEY. ❤❤❤
I've always thought that the stone markers you pass are graves and being able to get to the light on the mountain turns you into one of the white robed figures
Seeing this 10 years later is nuts. Still my favorite game. I’m 14, and played this on the ps3 originally. But now I have it on my phone and ps5. Brought me to tears when the game ended. I’ve played it like 5-6 times. I stoped playing it for a year now so I can get a fresh memory when I start playing again. 100,000/10 game. Glad it won GOTY in 2013
Sorrow, no more Erase your lust for war I know your truth Your destiny's cure Forbid your sins To live again in time Noble, righteous hearts could shine
Only last month I've came across with this beautiful game.. Never felt such feelings with any other games.. out of this world and so realistic at the same time.. So touchy, mystical, so comforting while playing.. Welcoming and showing hospitality.. Words arent enough. Thanks to everyone who shared effort in realising it..
Just played this and well.. just perfect. I lost my companion on the mountain section before so it suddendly felt really lonely in that part and I didn't even know if the game would punish me if I had forgotten somthing important. So when I fell I was actually quite scared to then see this finale. Just goddamn perfect
the first time i played this game, i was simply amazed by the everything. especially the symbolism. i have never been so speechless or at peace before, but after my niece passed away it hits me harder than before, so i stopped playing. a few weeks ago i played it and when the end came, i was balling my eyes out. it made me that emotional and it still does.
Man, just finished another journey and at the end of it, I drew a heart in the snow for my companion and even though it was crudely done, he/she understood it and drew one right back. This is, by far, the greatest game I have ever played. The Last of Us, Portal, Shadow of the Colossus, and every other game I've ever played, they just can't compare to Journey.
I was bawling at the end of this game. And any time I need to watch something to give me peace with the passing away of someone I cared about, I watch this. It truly is a masterpiece of a game and experience. It should be in an art exhibit.
Over the years games have come and gone and I've played plenty. Only a handful actually meant something. Fewer still live on in my memory. Journey makes the short list. Such a wonderful...journey.
I can say I got that from the narrative. It's why, when you start a new journey, you aren't where the star falls; it shows you sitting, watching it fall from a distance.
People have such cool experiences with other players voyaging to the end with them. When I ran into someone half way in I didn’t know it was another player. I thought it was an NPC because it didn’t have an icon over there head and the game didn’t really guide me to them. we traveled together for a little bit but then something happened and we got seperated... shame but I think it was cool how they put other people playing together on the same map. It was something I didn’t expect and it was cool when u saw someone, just as lost as you forming a little connection when you decide to go together. Really increased the intimacy in the game.
No game has been able to make me cry like this game does. And what's even better is that it has no dialogue at all. It's so beautiful i can't even put any words into it. This game is simply a work of art.
What are grossly overwhelming experience, and i mean that - not 'game' but an experience, to enjoy this game from the days of the PS3. It will live on in my heart (as i play it again on PS5) for the rest of my life. I have never experienced such a monumental game that is honestly without flaws of any kind. This is one of the only games i can genuinely say that i am thankful to be alive to experience it.
As 8 year old me played and finished this game for the first time, I was with a companion whom I had never met nor talked to. He was with me through it all, until this last moment. We had been walking up the mountain for 2 minutes, what felt like hours. My confidence was strong, but my legs were weak. I heard my companion behind me fall to the ground. His legs gave out on him. I ran over, continuously ringing my only sound out of me. He never responded. I gave him a silent salute before continuing on. I got slower and slower, but I didn't want to give up. I pushed myself, until I could no longer take it. I fell to my knees. I fell to the ground. This was the first game to get emotion out of me. In that moment, it felt like I had lost. I was tired of losing. I didn't want to lose when I was so close to beating my first game. I was about to quit until I heard the instruments of the game. I look up, and there I was. Flying. Relief coursed through my body, and a smile came to my face. I had another chance. I flew straight to the peak. There he was, my companion was waiting for me. We chattered with each other until we reached the bright light. He looked to me. I chirped. We walked into the light together. I had beat my first game. I couldn't help but run around with joy, screaming to everyone the news. I sit back down on the couch and enjoy the credit music. This game is my childhood.
I never played this originally when it came out. I played it I think in 2015 when it came to the PS4, but let me tell you I’m glad I did because this game was absolutely fantastic. It was mostly just exploring this vast open desert and learning it’s secrets and yet despite that I was deeply engaged, even getting help from other people too was really special. It’s also one of the few games that legit made me tear up from how beautiful it was. It truly was an experience I’ll never forget.
I love games like these that are touching and sincere. I just played for the first time a few minutes ago and had a companion almost right from the start. I was and still am fascinated by how good we communicated and worked together without words. We would show each other things, wait if one of us was struggling, share our power etc. Sadly I lost them right before the end. I waited for them for quite some time and tried to signal them but couldn't find them. Then I figuered they must be waiting for me on top of the mountain. Probably should have searched for them though, I honestly feel bad for not searching. Hopefully they still had a fun experience.
You died alone....after playing this game all the way through 5 times, I feel so bad for you. The best part of this game is "singing" with a stranger, finding hidden secrets or helping a new one through his or her first Journey. A shame to come this far only to end it all alone.
God's sake, I should have had no emotional investment in this! The character's a mute with nothing special going for her! Why the hell does the penultimate ending always make my eyes start leaking!?
Psychedelics, Eleusis & the before death experience in the form of a game - it’s beyond words, just like the above. Life really is about the journey, not the perceived goal.
There is a story. When you progress through the game they tell you all that information. Whether its a guy or a girl, you figure out yourself since its like a book really. In a book they tell you details, but you're really supposed to construct your own back story and surplus info around it. It leaves for an open ending
Awesome. Never thought of that. I was thinking it has something to do with the history of the land which you learn about in every cut scene and you're somehow taking part in some important prophecy or crusade. So it is a spiritual journey as well as one of curiosity. Its definitely some kind of epitome for life's journey for peace or anything that has a journey.
it is like life indeed. You start of a journey of your life just like what MrChowderClam said and how curious we are to know what is in the mountain and full of mystery. Such a beautiful game.
Completed this today. So good, like, gave me feels unlike any other game. From the caves me and a guy went on our journey. When I fell down from the bridge, he waited for me to climb back up and we warned eachother when we were hiding from the monsters. During the final ascent to the mountain top I got lost, but ended up at the top of the mountain ... but he wasn't there. So I waited as he did for me, and he showed up. I wasn't going to finish without him. So together we walked into the light...
Random kid: so what did you find at the mountain when you got there Me: what I found didn't matter.........it was how I got there that made it all the worthwhile Random kid: what do you mean? Me: the journey kid, it was always the journey that held more meaning to me
The end of this game is so sad. The tunnel is like if you're walking to the Death arms, but in other hand it's looks like if you're walking to Borning or walking to a new life) Amazing game, amazing soundtrack!
this ending gives me goosebumps every single time. man, such a beautiful game. thank you TGC for the most beautiful game i have ever played. portal 2, the last of us, the walking dead, they are all great, but journey is something even more...
I can say you are both right and wrong. This shouldn't really be called a game, it's more of an experience, where you have no need for skills, or reflexes, or anything. But this "game" does have a story, and it really touches you in a way I can't describe, I mean, you create a strong bound with another player, so strong that you don't want to finish. In my first playthrough, at the end of the journey, me and my partner just stood there, in the snow, jumping and singing to each other.
Its a metaphor about the journey of life. The cloaked figure is a soul trying to get to its destination ( heaven/ death/ enlightenment) and when it finally reaches that goal, it is reborn again to start the next journey.
You learn all those things from the murals you sing to and light up throughout the journey. Part of the point of this game is that they actual journey is in many ways more rewarding than the ending. I would actually say almost every way more rewarding, but that's subjective. What you do and how your character plays defines who you are and how you work. Do you drive to the end or meander and explore? You write the story as you play, you can watch any movie to have a story shoved in your face.
This was so dramatic, I remember I was playing with somebody else and we were just huddled together like two cripples caught in a snow storm on our way to dance class and I passed out and he tried to turn around for me. Truly the most Ride or Die game of all time.
It's one of those rare games where every ending is unique to different people, both on-screen and inside, making some "lets plays" of this ending feel strange and isolated. It's one of those rare endings you simply have to play to understand what I'm saying.
let me tell you something about this game, was a nice feeling to put your mind in automatic pilot, enjoy the landscape, what is happening even in the final act. That does care too much about the details inside, the partnership and also, how impossible is get enough to climb any mountain. Was a sick, but feeling ride.
ArikiaCrystal y Yes it's true
I didn’t know that.
But where does the star go?
Where does it land? Is our other character reborn?
Game theory: The travelers are collecting the glowing glyphs to power their arkship to travel to another planet to populate. :V
Yes, i fpund a shootong star and i was inspored now i am at the last stage :)
Sheds tears in my eye
One of three games that had brought me to tears, and the first video game to make me cry.
I had a companion. It was apparently obvious that neither of us had previously played the game. Somehow, we found most of the secrets, and a good few scarf upgrades. oh and the music is awesome
the best game to me ever
+Scylax when I was reading your comment I burst into tears.
FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU MOBILE FOR CUTTING OFF YOUR COMMENT
You could meet him because in the end of game they tell you who did you play with.
Margaery Tyrell Never ended up seeing that. Are you sure you could find out?
My first time playing with this game, I had one companion the whole time through. We both found secrets and scarf upgrades together and both lost most of the upgrades to the Guardians. Andrew Kaser i want to play the game SO badly and this comment was just so profound i wish i could bookmark it
To me this journey was like watching a soul being born, and then reborn.

Absolutely brilliant beautiful game, I still play it and interact with others. Can't believe there are others still playing.

This game is giving me tears of joy, hope heaven's like this. This is so peacefull
the first time i played this game, i was simply amazed by the everything. especially the symbolism. i have never been so speechless or at peace before, but after my niece passed away it hits me harder than before, so i stopped playing. a few weeks ago i played it and when the end came, i was balling my eyes out. it made me that emotional and it still does.
I love how the sun rises at the end-beginning
Just bought the vinyl, this game will be a part of me forever
I just finished the game about an hour ago, and what an ending it was. The soundtrack to this game was amazing to say the least.
My journey has ended, at long last I have found spiritual peace.
Some of us want to explore and move at our own pace through the "journey" of life.
The music right at the end, when you walk into the light... that solo cello.... so heartrending!!!!!!!!
This game is so amazing, the music and the graphics coming together perfectly, this isn't like any other game. It's perfection.
Every time I land on the mountain, I walk as slow as I can to the light and it's FUCKING BEAUTIFUL! I love this game more than I do life!
This game is such a beautiful metaphorical story this is the first time I’ve ever gotten emotional from a game
You died alone....after playing this game all the way through 5 times, I feel so bad for you.
The best part of this game is "singing" with a stranger, finding hidden secrets or helping a new one through his or her first Journey. A shame to come this far only to end it all alone.
terraLiquidus Same happens in real life. There is nothing bad about it. People choose their own path.
drew hearts on the sand at the end. goodbye my friend. :'(
Paradise
God's sake, I should have had no emotional investment in this! The character's a mute with nothing special going for her!
Why the hell does the penultimate ending always make my eyes start leaking!?
Immaturity on your part? An over-reliance on emotions?
Myes You are just the worst type of person.
The glow at the top of the mountain seems so close and yet so far.
Psychedelics, Eleusis & the before death experience in the form of a game - it’s beyond words, just like the above. Life really is about the journey, not the perceived goal.
I just cryed whatcing the video
This game put tears in these eyes T-T i play it every day
The top of the mountain is my favorite reward in a video game
Tyke that and 'still alive' from portal. months stuck in a laboratory with test chambers and a tormenting robot watching you. then a nice song.
11º Commandment: Thou shall play journey!
OMG that music... is so... just sooo beautiful
I cried buckets.
This, along with Gorogoa is I think one of the only computer games to truly touch the numinousm. Sublime. Spiritual. Profound.
Austin Wintory is a fucking genius.
This is beautiful. I want to play this game now. It's all about the journey after all :)
We stood there for about 1 minute, and when we finally reached the end, I understood this isn't your average game. This is art.
From 3:59, there is such a sad, haunting beauty to the whole sequence
Random kid: so what did you find at the mountain when you got there
Me: what I found didn't matter.........it was how I got there that made it all the worthwhile
Random kid: what do you mean?
Me: the journey kid, it was always the journey that held more meaning to me
I love how the character gets healed from the snow ❄️
Best game this generation. This whole ending is just A masterpiece. Incredible.
I just love this game
The end of this game is so sad.
The tunnel is like if you're walking to the Death arms, but in other hand it's looks like if you're walking to Borning or walking to a new life)
Amazing game, amazing soundtrack!
this ending gives me goosebumps every single time. man, such a beautiful game. thank you TGC for the most beautiful game i have ever played. portal 2, the last of us, the walking dead, they are all great, but journey is something even more...
Beautiful. I ALSO CRIED!!!!!!!
SO MANY FEELS *crys*
the most beautiful interactive experience i've ever had
This game is nothing less than an artistic masterpiece.
Its a metaphor about the journey of life. The cloaked figure is a soul trying to get to its destination ( heaven/ death/ enlightenment) and when it finally reaches that goal, it is reborn again to start the next journey.
I Cry When The Main Player Died:(
It's built around the idea of the hero's cycle. Search what makes a hero from TedEducation . Beautifully done
I also feel chill with this song, epic too :)
I played this for the first time yesterday and I enjoyed every moment had
This was so dramatic, I remember I was playing with somebody else and we were just huddled together like two cripples caught in a snow storm on our way to dance class and I passed out and he tried to turn around for me. Truly the most Ride or Die game of all time.
It's one of those rare games where every ending is unique to different people, both on-screen and inside, making some "lets plays" of this ending feel strange and isolated. It's one of those rare endings you simply have to play to understand what I'm saying.
There's a lot of deep mythological symbolism in this game.
let me tell you something about this game, was a nice feeling to put your mind in automatic pilot, enjoy the landscape, what is happening even in the final act. That does care too much about the details inside, the partnership and also, how impossible is get enough to climb any mountain. Was a sick, but feeling ride.
2019 I still love this game
