  • This Journey documentary details the development of the video game Journey and goes behind the scenes of its creation. The documentary also explores why the developer Thatgamecompany went bankrupt a couple of months before Journey was released in 2012. Jenova Chen was the creative director of Journey and made it his mission to make a video game where players can emotionally connect with each other. Discover the many struggles the team had to go through while developing this amazing video game.

Sadly, the sand transitions look completely messed up after uploading to UA-cam. They look crystal clear on the source file. My apologies and hopefully the video is still enjoyable to watch. I will look into this for future videos.

I went to last and hardest area of the game ( no spoilers), I was so scared and started ping-ing non-stop, I was in an empty server mind you, when suddenly another player started to ping back. It just feels , idk, relieved. Like there's someone there. The person was up on the top and probably was afraid to go down, but they ping-ed like crazy once I reached them. I remember buying the game when it first launched on PS3, I was so excited to see what the game was about.
I remember my first playthrough. I first wandered around the starting desert area figuring out the game. Finally when I had reached into the larger space I had found someone and I was curious and tried to follow them to see where they were going. Soon after they left, then I found another and I tried to join them but they left too. And it made me feel so sad and isolated so I just went through most of the game alone. By then I was starting to internalize why I was alone all the time, as I tend to keep to myself IRL. Until I reached the mountain, I had found someone! We stuck to each other like glue and reached the peak together. I was so happy, they were happy too and they drew a heart in the snow. I was so elated to have reached the summit with someone and I was overwhelmed with emotion that I cried. This game was such a profound experience that I cherish this game still to this day. I tried to send a friend request to that player but I didn't know how.
I've only fully played the game once, I don't think I can feel the same way as I did that first time. I have gone back and done the trophies though, but this game is nothing short of a masterpiece as far as videogames being art goes.

I remember playing portal 2 with a friend, the most fun part wasn't working together, it was when we'd both accidentally bash into each other and fall into the pool below, or when he was trying to solve the puzzle but I ran off with the cube and we chased each other. Eventually I broke the puzzle and we had to break it even further to solve it.
It makes me think that rather than forcing people to work together, having them choose to work together is so much more fulfilling. I haven't played Journey, but this video makes it sound like they transitioned from the former to the latter over time.

I certainly can't say either of you are wrong, but this thinking comes from the small test group of your friends/family. I remember the times I dicked over my friend T in Portal 2 by blocking him with a light bridge, but when you add in the layer of anonymity when playing with online randos you tend to get miscommunication at various levels. Be it getting frustrated at not understanding what each other want, to not reading the room in what the other deems appropriate or what they want to do.

I am very antisocial irl and when my parents bought me Portal 2 for the PS3 I had so much fun playing the story. Then I don't remember who told me or where I read it, but somehow I learned that there were community levels on PC. I installed Steam for the first time... and played lots of singleplayer levels, until I ran out of good ones. Then I saw there was a coop mode........ There, I made my first online friend ever. Kylew. I didn't even speak english at the time (I'm from Spain) and I don't know if he did, either. There was no written communication between us, just the Portal 2 gestures, moving around and pointing at things. It was very special to me. This video about Journey and you mentioning Portal 2 made me remember this, and see a connection between my first online experience and the one I had when I played Journey. They are so similar... how did I not realize sooner? It's amazing what they accomplished with this game...

...I still have no idea how many players I had been playing with. It felt like an MMO, and I frequently found myself led by a more experienced player who was acting as a sort of objective marker. I remember being wholly alone in the serpent level by pure coincidence which I think deepened the tension in that level, and the final level felt amazing, both from gameplay and from narrative standpoints. The other player and I were oppressed by those treacherous frozen winds, and I am certain I felt something with that final cutscene. Journey will still be sending ripples across the waters of the industry for years to come.

Journey is a masterpiece, when I watch the trailer back then, I was curious for what this game could be, it was a weird feeling because I really wanted to play the game after that.
And when I got it, I take my time to play it, discover the unknown lands, meeting random players, discovering the history behind this ruins on the dessert. Was something magical for me, the expectations that I have just keep going up and I just love it, the music, the gameplay, the graphic style and the journey.
So if you still don't play it, try it, is just an unique experience that is rarely seeing in games, and play it alone without any interruption if you can.

Great video essay - well researched and well put together.
I know that Journey is often cited as being one of the most emotional games... however coming into late on the PS4, I found it largely empty and devoid of any human interaction. It was only on the second play thru that I actually even saw another player (and didn't know at that stage it was multiplayer). So for me, the emotion was one of solitude and emptiness. I think what was missing from the game (due to the dependence of who else was playing) was the sense of helping each other at the end.... for example, if the comms button had allowed for mutual/supported progression that made the challenge of reaching the light/summit more meaningful, then there would have been a greater mutual connection. As it was, I felt the multiplayer was more in terms of a distant spectator - that could sometimes provide hints... but those hints were often obscured by lack of communication, leading one or both to go their own way. It would have been good to share something more tangible - to understand the value - other than just a disembodied companion ghost - in a world of ghosts. I appreciate the effort to make gaming into something else, but at the end of the day, I don't think it achieved that for me (though perhaps this was as much a byproduct of when I started playing).

Keep it more quiet throughout and let the music shine in the emotional beats of the script... also swap tracks a few times. Maybe its just me but the noise from the music bothered me throughout this video, like it distracted from what you were trying to say, and it kept swelling and sounding sad even when you weren't saying anything sad or emotionally impactful. Idk man it just distracted from what you were saying, which I really wanted to just hear, especially when it was the same song over and over.

I don't remember how long it was ago (I think it was 2013) but I remember buying the collector's edition for my ps3 and every one of them was just so beautiful. But what really made me emotional was Journey. The first time I played it, I cried at the end because the sceneries in the game was just amazing + the journey to the mountain top with another player was just...wow!
And your insight about their struggles and the making of it really made me appreciate the games even more.😁

Journey was not a game that "touched me" when I was playing it... it was fun, but to "think" on what's the next thing to do, at least for me, was distracting... But then it came the day a friend of mine saw Journey on my game library and said. can I play it...? sure, I replied.
And then I saw an entirely different game and experience. I was free from thinking of "what to do" and then, the entire event flourished in front of my eyes. Showing me the adventure and the connections the developers were aiming for. It was funny, because I had to remove myself from the entire game to actually experience It's emotion... and then cried like a child on it's end, at the same time my friend asked me... Are you alright?. And smile at the screen as I gladly said.
    Yes.. I am...
#Thatgamecompany Thank you, for creating Journey, a game that will live forever in my heart.

@@lanyardodo that would be the finance department of Sony having their say. Sony is smart, they know winners, they had invested already and weren't about to lose sight of the goal. I know Sony gets kicked, but honestly they do have the best exclusives out there for reasons.

ITs crazy that this story of developing journey sounds a lot like the story of journey itself, especially the ending. The company, like the protagonist of Journey, nearly died at the moment before the unveiling of the light (the release) Seeing those connections definitely brought a tear to my eye, because Journey was such a moving game to me, the most beautiful game I've ever played.
