This is the very interesting and multifunctional tranciever. I like this beautiful device. Every time when I read the manual again and again I found out new useful features. Now Yaesu FT-857D is out of production, but this is the smallest SW/VHF/UHF-tranciever with output power 100 Watts in SW in present. PLUS for important features. TNX 73
Smiling! Didn't know that about top button or the tuning 1k steps with the little knob. The radio is a great radio but running it in my Jeep Wrangler hard to tune.. till now. I will give it a try.
Nice to about these features on the 857D. Excellent piece of kit. I've just got mine delivered today (general coverage modified😊 ) Your videos are absolutely brilliant my good friend. Have a good one mate👍
I used to Never use the Manual but with these newer Radios I always seem to have to keep going back to the manual to find out what a certain function does, I think also as I am getting older there is not as much free available memory in the grey matter....I have been off the air for a good few years and was wondering what Radio you would recommend for someone who doesn't have a lot of dosh to play with the last HF radio I owned was an IC720A but had to sell that when i came back to Liverpool after Living Down Under in Christchurch. Nice to see the Video about the Functions Cheers.
Hi Steve. If you're talking about a HF radio for the shack I would get a Yaesu FT450. The later model is the 450D. I have never used the 450D but my 450 is a great little radio and can be picked up for a good price these days. It has a large display which is great for us old codgers, the menu is easy to use, and the performance is better than you would expect for the price. I get many unsolicited compliments on my TX audio quality. If you want HF, 6m, VHF and UHF with good performance and output power levels in one small package it has to be a Yaesu FT857D... I have two of them.
VK6CS Thanks very much for the Advise and reccomendations Steve I think i will start keeping my eyes open on Ebay for a used FT857D or an FT450 may need to save up a bit more but need to find something to Amuse me as the wx is starting to get Colder here in Liverpool and you are well on the way to Hot Sunny days down there in Nr Perth...Anyway getting late here so better get some Zzzzs Thank You once again 73 de Steve M0BFM ex ZL3LFC,ZL3BUJ,ZL3TRU and G1VQD.
Another interesting thing to adjust is Menu 015 and 017 Receive Carrier Point. Adjust each of these for your best sounding Rx audio. I think I set mine for +150Hz each they are originally set to 0Hz
I'm looking at getting a mobile radio in my rig when I get back from overseas are the 857's still readily available and how do they put up with the harsh conditions we have in Aus ? Great video 73's Phil.
How easy is this radio to operate, I’m looking at the 857D and the 991A and haven’t decided which to get, I’m wanting them for the fact they both have uhf/vhf.
The FT857D is very easy to operate. I've never used a 991A so I can't say if it's easier to operate than the 8557D or not. I like the 857D because it's small and the head can be remotely mounted, it's ideal for mobile, portable and shack operation. This is my shack: ua-cam.com/video/mYNI1kdb9XQ/v-deo.html
If you briefly press the power button it will change the little icon in the bottom corner of the display and your 857 will be more of a fin tune If that could help you with another idea thanks from jason 2e0wsj
Hi Steve. I have the 857 and a 817 and use to have a 897 in the shack. in the mobile the 857 is great. at the moment i have a 7000 mobile. not a patch on the yaesu rigs.
Some of the local guys tried to sway me towards the 7000 when I was looking at buying the 857. When I looked at the spec I found the 7000 uses phase mod on VHF and UHF. The Yaesu uses FM so it will always sound nicer on the air. I'm glad I went with the 857 that's for sure.
Well, to put a fine point on it..... My family already say Long live The King because our King is King Harold V of Norway. But since I am also British I say Long live Her Majesty. And may She reign over us for ever. Rule Britannia. And long live The Commonwealth. I guess that wasn't the climax you were expecting :-)

Long live Her Majesty.
Soon you'll be able to say long live the King.
