I am Slavic woman. My ancestors were enslaved by the Tartars, Arabs, and North Africans. Our villages were raided, our men killed, and our women and children trafficked into harems and forced labour. It cuts deep into my soul knowing how many of my ancestors were raped and trafficked into sexual slavery because non-whites found them "exotic." This can go both ways. If blacks will ask whites for reparations, expect us Eastern Europeans to ask North Africa and the Muslim world for reparations as well.

True. That is because the first ones being enslaved were slavic people and people nearby. And they were the last ones who got free from being slaves. These regions was one of the last places if not the last where slaveowning was banned.

      Well spoken.
I live in Africa and am often confronted with these accusations. My modest knowledge of history helps me through many a verbal firefight. Usually they Look at me with great disgrace and disbelieve when I tell them that african slave traders raided Europe many century's before Europe even thought of shipping black slaves to the Americas.
That slavery was not invented by the English or Americans does not appear to them. Well, they are not to blame. Propaganda of that kind always finds fruitful soil.

A new idea struck my mind. Could it be possible that he is not requesting for reparation for his country?
Could it be possible, and in the meanwhile I deeply believe so, he is calling for reparation for the loss of business over generations, de facto money for the local slave traders?
I mean, his family selling slaves would mean that they used to sell them to the English too. Good profit till shit hit the fan when England stopped slave trading.
So seen, this is not a historical but far more an economical issue.
We just need to see it in the right context then his words finally make sense

I would like to apologize to the black gentleman, for my ancestors having ended slavery across the Western hemisphere, and for eventually integrating the descendants of that slavery into their communities and political systems at the highest levels. Many other cultures simply massacred their slaves or castrated them so that they could not reproduce. Since my ancestors chose to let the descendants of slaves live in the countries we built, those descendants have a far better quality of life than 99% of the population of their original countries.
I wouldn't say we expect a "thank you" for ending the practice which his ancestors started. But at a minimum we would like to not be asked to give endless amounts of money to people who benefitted from the actions of my ancestors and would likely still be slaves worldwide today if not for our intervention.

These 'conversations' are never going to be productive. No reparations have been distributed to most of humanity that have suffering and periods of captivity, indentured servitude, aggression, etc. in their ancestry. Good men and women rise in spite of it. The Irish, Scots-Irish, Italians, Scandinavians, and many, many more peoples have arrived destitute in America and made a life for their future generations and aren't crying with a begging bowl. They're holding their own people back by placing the focus on a non-existent prize for victimhood, rather than giving a freedom mindset and the gift of improved destiny. Promising money that isn't owed is just stringing people along after a pied piper with empty promises.

It let me them stay for an extended time to work on getting their green card. Because the children are illegal aliens. When black people were stopped on the street and asked if the Dreamers should be punished because of what their parents did by breaking the law and bringing them here as little kids. Everyone of them answered that the children should not be punished for what the parents did. Reparations.... How about a one way ticket out the UK. People like to be around their own people - that simple, it's human nature, nothing to apologise for. If he feels discriminated against it's because he's a foreigner in a foreign country. But as cultures go we're very welcoming. I'm sure he'd be much happier back with his own people if he feels so bitterly about the English because frankly people have had enough of this rhetoric in as much that it is creating racism at this point.

Yes! My parents and grandparents went through a very similar thing to your great-grandparents. They’re from a Balkan country, where they too were being treated badly by the government they were under. This was after these countries had endured 520 years under the Ottoman Empire and the oppression that came with that. My family moved forward and worked their rear ends off to make a better life for themselves and create a better future for their children - in a different country where they were called derogatory names, and sometimes threatened with violence because they didn’t speak English, but they powered through.

Why do ppl assume that American slaves were ALL unhappy? If I had a slave, we’d be bros. I wouldn’t be cruel. Would you?
Don’t let them steal the narrative that slavery was entirely bad just because they read a couple books that sensationalized the horrific elements of it. The dude admits it, himself. The slaves didn’t have it too bad in Africa. And the alternative to slavery was to be killed, since it was a result of a conquering. The victorious party is showing mercy by assimilating the defeated citizens and providing them with work. Better than beheading them.
Furthermore: room and board has value. It costs me at least $30,000/yr to feed and house myself. Granted, the living quarters may not have been as nice as my apartment and the food isn’t NY strip steak, but there is some form of payment system.
Lastly, the modern descendants of African slaves now live in luxury versus poverty. They SHOULD be grateful for the sacrifices their ancestors made. Yet, they choose to live in hate (like the Palestinians). Controversial opinion, but I’m not sorry about it.
