Pretty informative video for us shade tree mechanics. Please don't use a torque wrench to loosen the bolts, use a breaker (breakover) bar instead. Overall a good job.

Replaced my cover today on my 06 Duramax. 14 bolts took 4 hours. Total job 7 hrs. Bolt heads were so corroded there was nothing to grab on and loosen. Had to grind the flange off for more clamping space. New cover and bolts look good.

Man, I hate when a simple project turns into a “Chinese Fire Drill chasing a bunch of wild geese”.

Superb job on this much neglected maintenance item on most vehicles. 👍

That’s kind of scary for that little amount of fluid. Hopefully it didn’t damage anything but from what it looks like it looks solid.

Use a breaker bar to loosen things, not your brother's good torque wrench.

Seemed low because needs to be filled to 5/8 inch to 1-5/8 inch from the fill hole
    Not till it overflows
Not saying it won’t work but that’s why

How many miles during the change?

Gear oil weights are different for the front and back. In the z71, the front diff is to take 80w and the back is to take 75w.
Use your torque wrench to tighten things, not loosen. You have an impact, why not use it.
Generally if your fluid is smelly it is because it is burnt, good thing its being changed!!
    Other than that great vid!!

Thanks for that information bud. Surprisingly difficult info to find for such a routine maintenance operation.

75W90 in the front is fine. GM originally said 80 for the front but changed it some time later.

Take all the bolts out and you won’t have to use a flathead and a hammer to get the cover off and never use a torque wrench to get something loose Lol

Good video, but seriously never use a torque wrench to loosen bolts good way to ruin your torque wrench.

It's BS they don't put drain plugs in these instead of making you pull the pan and have to replace the gasket
