I think this game and Gaiden are the best in the series. They really set themselves apart with incredible music and stage design. They're tough but make you wanna come back for more.

The only reason we survived Gradius 3 on the SNES is because of slowdown. Even then, it was BRUTAL. Kinda interesting they re-used Gradius II bosses for the Boss Rush Stage
This game may be brutally difficult, easily one of the hardest games ever made, but if theres one thing that nothing negative can be said about this game is the soundtrack

I remember playing the PSX version (a highly faithful port). By the second level, I was sweating bullets. Near the end of the third level, I was ready to take a sledgehammer to the console. All those razzafrakkin ice boulders. So hard. So gut-wrenchingly hard. Hard, hard, hard, hard, hard, hard. I bought it for $50 brand new. After two days, I took it back. I tried to explain that, yes, it ran all right, but it's so outrageously, ridiculously hard as to be essentially unplayable. (The highlight was needing about two minutes to explain what the "Konami Code" was.) Store owner brought in a couple kids to see if it was that bad. They played the first level a bit, said yeah, pretty much. Store owner offered me credit of 50 cents on the dollar. I took it. Frickin' shooters. (Was this _really_ the same company that gave us Dance Dance Revolution?)

I've only played R Type, and I love the stark contrast in tone compared to that game. This game has such an upbeat space shooter soundtrack and feels so much more epic.

I tried to play this game yesterday, and so far, I only died in the second stage. It really IS that hard, but that's what you should expect from Gradius.
So pissed that Konami made it so Gradius PSP Collection wouldn't work on the PSTV/Vita TV! I paid $20 for it just to play it on a large screen HDTV and was denied. Not that I needed any more reason to hate Konami..! ;|

I think that's an emulation problem. A similar problem shows up in the end credits when Earth is rendered. Layer drawing on the original hardware often relied upon very precise signal timing.

So this whole "stop the bacterion empire" thing is based on a false premise the whole time! I also find the death speech of the boss of Gradius 3 pretty funny too. The last stage is bullshit... Look at 25:16. It's IMPOSSIBLE to destroy that ship spawner and live. You absolutely have to have a shield or get extremely lucky. Bad level design. Not to mention that at the midboss, there are 3 turrets you can't kill along with endless shots you have to stream.
Dude, it doesn't stop spawning until you're already past where it would be a problem. I've tried that. You *have* to have a shield or you *will* die at that point, no matter what you do. And the other weapon sets are harder for the rest of the game up to that point, even if they would be good for that particular trap. Remember, it's an arcade game; they aren't always designed with fairness in mind. As long as it was fun enough to keep playing, they'd add cheap deathtraps to eat up your quarters while you figured out the exact way to cheese it.
I've done no miss runs of Gradius I and II on the console ports, as well as the original Gradius in an arcade. I'm already good. I'm just not the master of cheap bullshit lol
+Alice Wolff But you haven't no-missed Gradius II arcade, so you are still an uneducated whiner. You can overcome that part easily with your options, using double, ripple or 2-way, even without them it's still doable. There are much more dangerous areas like the Moai stage.
I remember playing this game on my uncle's NES. I don't know how this game found its way to Canada but it was the Famicom version with an adaptor attached to it so you could play it on North American systems. I could only beat the first level but I loved that game.

Confirmed. Loop 2's pre-stages are difficult as it is, and the actual stages are hell even with powerups. Practicing recovery runs will be a pain.

Most playable of the Gradius series, but 3 was a beast and the real game to show off on, Crystal rush anyone? and the most amazing music.
Gradius 2 is a great game. Although it was out 32 years ago.
