With no central heat or water at all in an abandoned house, i find that metal lids and cans get rusty and would eventually break through to let food spoil. So I'm wondering if a simple solution would be to turn the filled jars upsidedown and quickly dip in melted wax to protect the metal from moisture? I guess cans would be best rotated before rust gets too far. I'm a disabled veteran Air Force age 72 in Pittsburgh.
There are plastic lids. It does let a tiny bit of air in but not too horribly. If you're going to use in 6 months to a year, the plastic lids would work great.
I searched for 3 years for a solution for rusting cans. I have a damp basement and a shipping container that can leak a bit and cause rust. I think I just found an answer that will suit me. Food Safe spray silicone comes in 2 forms, one stays "wet" like WD 40 but the other "dries" which I think is my solution. I realize I will have to remove and then replace the paper label (if possible) but there are always sharpie markers for identification. I have a regular grocery store can of corn I left out on the top of the basement stairs as a rust test since early 2021 and it is completely rusted. The metal isn't giving way yet but I don't think it will be long. My canning jar rings are rusting right on my jars on the kitchen shelves. I am rehabbing a house so my humidity level is probably higher than most.
Maybe dehydrated food in mylar bags in buckets bins and jars is the answer...although they are very vulnerable if breached. Good to know about food-safe silicon spray!
I agree she should write a cookbook. It would be fabulous. But if you are looking for a cookbook on meals in a jar, I would direct you to The Freeze Dried Foodie. She has a cookbook that’s digital, and her recipes are amazing as well.
Love this Jen.. I started this in 2021 when here in Cali..the Bear Creek soup bags went to $9 @bag..and came up with great recipes..better, cheaper, more diverse and no extra bs chems/products! I wish ya'll as creators would get together and maybe do a week of ideas from different people😊 These are wonderful & smart for anything..our best ideas for camping trips! That everything you need for a big easy meal is already there, ready to go! This, along with meals in a bag for shelf stable products is just wonderful. Our latest idea was a chicken pot pie..but with "stuffing" for the crusts😊
I'm always trying to find new meal ideas for my dehydrated stuff! These look great and simple! Would love to see more of these recipe videos! Thank you!👍
An alternative to buying oxygen absorbers, I have a vacuum sealer with a port on it to attach to a hose so I can vacuum seal my jars. Comes in handy to vacuum seal half gallon jars full of flour, sugar, rice or any dry item.
Great idea. I've put back a dozen meals in a jar. So far chicken dressing is our favorite. Thanks Jinne for the ideas. Remember ya'll to Pray, Plan, Prep
Fantastic idea, everything sounds so yummy! I'm envisioning a couple dozen jars made up in advance to save time & have the required amount of water stored nearby. Thanks for sharing another great idea. 🥰
Love the meal in jar recipes using the freeze-dried and dehydrated foods. Makes a meal quickly and also if the usual cook is not well, another family member can do it easily with the directions on it. Thank you!!💕
Thank you so much, Jinnie. I've been thinking of a bean burger recipe in a jar. I have the ingredients: just need to experiment with the measurements. 🥰
Just a little tip all the information that you wrote on the lid of a jar you can write on the side of the jar with a sharpie pen and it washes off. I know you can use alcohol to get it off the lid but the longer it’s on the lid it doesn’t all come off with alcohol.
I’ve been running around like a mad women….Filling in gaps….Prepping the the garden…So Much going on….Catching up on your videos….Then canning them up❣️ Thanks Always Jinnie ❤️
Rewatched to put together more jars. Bought 3 cases of Hungry Jack Potatoes at costco. Thrive Life and Augason Farm are wonderful products. Great helpful video.
You can also vacuum seal these jars if you put the dry ingredients in first so the machine doesn't suck in any food dust as it vacuums the jar, if you don't want to buy oxygen absorbers since they're a one shot and done item. You can also keep your opened freeze dried items in glass jars using the vacuum pack or your oxygen absorbers to keep the air away from the contents.
Hi Gloria! I've been collecting Thrive Life ingredients for a little while and it's kind of exciting to be able to put together these meals in a jar. Sometimes the number 10 cans are cheaper than buying the pantry cans. Sometimes not. I have several number 10 cans of diced potatoes and broccoli. The beef too. The chicken is not cheaper in the number 10 cans though. Happy meal planning!
Thank you so much. I immediately saved this too my prepping and my cooking files. I get the thrive life and sit there and wonder…NOW WHAT! Lol..so these are much appreciated! I hope your safe and well!💐🙏🏼💐
Like your method better than mine yours all dry n ready to add water thanx.ill do yours from now on.n dont have to freeze or worru bout jars breaking thanks.
You can use your dehydrated food products with most freeze-dried recipes. They just take longer to hydrate and sometimes need a little more liquid when you prepare them to eat.
Happy Tuesday Stephanie, That’s so thoughtful of you, Thanks for your positive review, How are you.. where are you from and how’s the weather over there?
I prefer to sprinkle the dry in the middle. On the bottom, the powder tends to pack over time. On the top, the powder can suck past the seal when vacuum sealing. I like the absorber and vacuum if I’m making meals for a year or more.
If you use an oxygen absorber, it will vacuum seal and should last years. If you seal it with a vacuum bag sealer attachment, it should last a year or so without problems.
I am planning a prepped pantry and wanting ideas to jar the dry foods I make in the dehytor I have so i can feed my family even if food shortages happen again like after COVID-19 hit the USA.
Jinnie could I do the same thing with dehydrated foods? With the exception of the powdered ingredients. It would probably need to cook longer I think 🤔🤔🙏 Kendra
For the mac and cheese dish, can everything be combined in one jar, without the zip lock, and cooked all at once if using a pressure cooker? Pasta does not have to be drained if cooked in the pressure cooker.
I am totally lost! Are there writings on the boxes that tell you how much dry equal fresh so you can follow recipes? Are there recipe books that tell you how much dry ingredients? It is a great idea and I would really love to make them! Thanks!
Whatever Jinne is doing, I'm in favor of it because she's doing something right. I'm writing down the ones that I think sound like something that I would cook. Where are you at? I'm in the southern part of Wisconsin. Granted, my tastes are along the blander side for other parts of the country, but I'm old enough to know what I like. Jinne puts together an assortment of tastes to please different kinds of people. I think that she's doing a great job. Take care.
I make 5 quart jars each of beef stew, chicken noodle soup, chili, veg soup, chili and spaghetti each month. Make one after other.its cheaper n same heat. After cooled to room temp ill freeze all but keep 1 of each in fridge. I eat olde fashioned oatmeal boil add 1/4 brown sugar add banana aorange on side for breakfast. For lunch i eat one of what i cooked. Peanut butter sandwich n iced Sun Tea for lunch. For Supper popcorn. Most work is done so dont need fat creating meal for fuel. As u take one out of fridge take 1 of that kind out of freezer n put n fridge. Itll b thawed n 2 days n b refrigerated n safe when ready to cook.

Now that’s an idea I didn’t think of.
A wax seal would help keep the moisture out... However, the temperature differentials can often affect the taste and nutritional value of the foods.
There are plastic lids. It does let a tiny bit of air in but not too horribly. If you're going to use in 6 months to a year, the plastic lids would work great.

Jinnie, I love your videos with the dehydrated recipes. You really should write a cookbook to sell. I would sure buy it!
You know, I don’t buy cookbooks normally, but I’d probably buy that one.
I agree she should write a cookbook. It would be fabulous. But if you are looking for a cookbook on meals in a jar, I would direct you to The Freeze Dried Foodie. She has a cookbook that’s digital, and her recipes are amazing as well.
Wow! I never thought of this! I'm so going to do this. Thankyou so much!
For what it would cost me to get a freeze dryer I could buy 10 years worth of organic box premade

Shalom! I think this is my all time favorite video of yours!!! I LOVE “meal in a jar” demonstrations. Blessings in Yeshua’s יהרשע matchless Name.

Sound good! Do you have a recipe for it?
Can you share the recipe for the chicken dressing?
Can you share recipe please?
Can you do a follow up showing us how to rehydrate and the finished product.
Thank you!!💕
Love all your meals in a jar! I need to look into more freeze dried foods. I have a few. Eggs, milk, tomato powder is all. Thank you Jenni!! ❤️
Thank you so much, Jinnie. I've been thinking of a bean burger recipe in a jar. I have the ingredients: just need to experiment with the measurements. 🥰
This is brilliant. This and yesterdays video about herbs are on my saved list for reference. Thank you for helping us think outside of the box.

I love the way you say 'It's Delicious' when you were talking about Garlic.
These sound so good. Thank you.
Dried meals are 150 grams per adult, typically the proteins consisting of 1/3 of the meal so 50 grams.
I’ve been running around like a mad women….Filling in gaps….Prepping the the garden…So Much going on….Catching up on your videos….Then canning them up❣️ Thanks Always Jinnie ❤️
Awesome ideas! I need to do this myself, thanks for showing us. Easy peasy

You can use your dehydrated food products with most freeze-dried recipes. They just take longer to hydrate and sometimes need a little more liquid when you prepare them to eat.

Awesome! Quick question. How many Adults does a meal like that in the Quart jar feed? And where did you get the holder for the top of the jar?
Good question, I'd like to know that too!!!
Me too!
Depends how hungry the adults are.
Fucking still waiting
I got mine at Walmart.
Thanks alot Tanja you are helping alot of People. I was worry alot for the near Future.
Great ideas!

Cool, what a clever idea.👍
TFS HC, take care & keep really busy everyone. ❤🙂🐶
These come in very handy !
Thank you for sharing these with us. I make meals in jars, but it is nice to see how other people do theirs.
Great idea I never thought of it thx
Great video. I learned a little
That is GREAT
The small snack baggies work great for this
Can you vacuum seal the jars if you want to?
If you use an oxygen absorber, it will vacuum seal and should last years. If you seal it with a vacuum bag sealer attachment, it should last a year or so without problems.
love these!!!
@HomesteadCorner Where did you get the jar strainer? I love it!
Love these, thank you!
Awesome! Now I want to buy powdered butter.
I am planning a prepped pantry and wanting ideas to jar the dry foods I make in the dehytor I have so i can feed my family even if food shortages happen again like after COVID-19 hit the USA.
Would love to see more like this!
Instead of adding salt, perhaps you could add you choice of bullion??
Jinnie could I do the same thing with dehydrated foods? With the exception of the powdered ingredients. It would probably need to cook longer I think 🤔🤔🙏 Kendra
Yes, dehydrated foods work as well... you may need to adjust the cooking time, but it will work! 💕🇺🇲
How many servings per jar? Thanks for the great video! I love learning preps like this. :)
For the mac and cheese dish, can everything be combined in one jar, without the zip lock, and cooked all at once if using a pressure cooker? Pasta does not have to be drained if cooked in the pressure cooker.
What a great idea! Thanks, Jinne ❤😊
I am totally lost! Are there writings on the boxes that tell you how much dry equal fresh so you can follow recipes?
Are there recipe books that tell you how much dry ingredients? It is a great idea and I would really love to make them! Thanks!
@homesteadcorner Are you using a guide or manual to pull these together or are these your own recipes pulled together from experience????

So for the Mac &Cheese double the amount of water as noodles, cook noodles as usual. Do not drain. Add the powders, stir until done.
Thank you so much!!!!! ❤
Great ideas. Can you provide me with a link to the funnel you used?
The link is in the description now.
Good video.Thanks for the inspiration!!

Awsome, how fun. Going to try
Wow this is great idea thank you I'm in Australia I'll have to look and see if we have frezze dried foods in can's 😊❤️
Love these ideas
2 questions. 1 Is there a sub for sour cream? 2 Can I use freeze dried shredded cheese for the cheese powder?
These are fantastic!! Ty!!!
Awesome thanks for sharing
Awesome job girl. 😋
What size oxygen absorber did you use in each jar?
Where do you find more recipes?
Hi Jinnie,
New viewer and subscriber to your channel! You are amazing! Thank you for providing such delicious looking recipes! I'm going to try making the Potato Sausage Casserole for my first time ever effort with meals in a jar! Quick question which you may have already touched upon--but what is the shelf life of this recipe? Thank you again so much! Looking forward to tryiing some of your other delicious meals!
Thanks!
So easy and practical! Thank you
I am very new to prepping. Would these meals last longer if they were packed in Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers? Would storing these meals in jars with O2 absorbers and vacuum-sealing them extend their life any longer, is that just overkill? I'm trying to get the most out of my food for long-term storage. Thank you. Love these recipes! New subscriber here.
OMG, you have open my eyes up to a lot of stuff. Thank you. How many do those jars feed?
These will feed 3-4 people depending on how hungry they are. 😋
First time watching your channel. Where did you get that funnel??!! I've never seen anything like it!
She now has a link to the funnel. I used her link to the electric mason jar vacuum.
