  • Hasselblad allowed me to have a go with one of their top tier cameras: The Hasseblad H6D 100c. Its a 100 mega-pixel digital medium format camera with a sensor as large as an IMAX camera. I tried out my custom anamorphic setup on this camera. Yeah, it was amazing.

      Adrian Parkinson Yeah, good point! By the way this terminology has always bothered me. Why is it called de-squeezing while it's actually de-stretching? or even better, just squeezing!

    Absolutely loved this video, but the usual IMAX format is actually 70mm x 53mm, compared to the 53mm x 40mm of the H6D-100c. Only the Arri Alexa 65 which was built in conjunction with IMAX and probably their 65mm 4k 3D camera have a smaller sensor sizes (around 54mm x 26mm). But I would love to see a movie shot on the Hasselblad system, as I saw in another video, rolling shutter might be the biggest problem. Thanks for the great video, those visuals were just amazing.

    • @GxAce
      @GxAce  5 років тому

      I was mostly referring to the Alexa 65 when I mentioned it being as large as an IMAX camera. The sensor is similar size horizontally but the Alexa has a more narrow aspect ratio. If only the Hasselblad shot in an “open gate” mode and could shoot the full sensor size in video instead of 16x9.

      We use Alexa 65 and new Zeiss Ana Primes and it DOES NOT produce better iq than Hasselblad - we also used Red Epic Dragon for some stills and they were nowhere near as good as when we used our own Hassy H6d - also should be noted that whilst ALexa is virtually medium format its in the codecs where the stills magic happens and that's where Phase One/Hassy will always be better - and yes we tried both for video - Alexa won - in fact before we got the 65 we used the 4:3 Studio Alexa with Hawk Ana's and yes the 65 is way way better on all grounds - its horses for courses - its why Arri don't make stills cameras and Hassy dont make video cameras -

    Dear GxAce,
    footage just looks f. gorgeous. it outweighs by far all the neg.nitpicking aberrations mentioned below, obviously its not a film camera(I have one myself) and it comes with quite a few disadvantaged...but the advantages, wow. I bought the camera, 2 years ago...have 5 lenses with it...and finally paid off my last lease rate last month. ugh. I use it for pictures...and the look is just different. agreed, not everyone sees it. some clients say: yeah I liked your pictures before too...(canon 5d) but I see the difference, its another perspective...another quality.
    for some people filming with iPhone already is amazing. but for me there is so much information in the images to play with if you know how, the bokeh is like nothing else and the depth of field is like nothing else.
    I really got it for the potential of filming. though, I learned the camera has certain real disadvantages that I want to deal with. 1, there have been no upgrades from Hasselblad that make the filming part better or have given it new options etc to make filming easier. I still hope this will come...2. the overheating off the sensor which depending on the weather can start to happen quite fast, and once its hit a certain temperature, you can stop shooting all together cause it takes a long time to cool down. 3. audio problems.
    ALPA Switzerland, an amazing small Swiss top of the line company has been working on a solution to have PL mount and cooling system which looks very promising but also very expensive and prices are not out yet... but it would definitely make it a workable solution to film with for projects where money is not such a big issue. I am very interested in your solution and if can create something alike for my Hd6 but I am not a handy man, If you can help to create something similar I would be very thankful, the Hasselblad lenses are very good but are not meant for filming. all operated through the camera and though you can only change focus distance the throw is extremely short...
    Thank you!
    Raphael

      Wow! Thank you so much for such a detailed comment! There are definitely some limitations to its filming capabilities, but if you know how to work with them, you can get some awesome stuff! I have been eyeing that Alpa Platon, it looks awesome!

    Although sensor size plays a huge part, things like color accuracy, motion blur and roll off in video are different things altogether. Works on paper yes but not in the real world. No cinematographer would pic this over even an Ursa mini. That being said, this is a phenomenal camera in terms of photography and I'd sure envy someone holding it especially with an anamorphic attachment slapped in front. Also as an owner of 7 hasselblad medium format lenses, I can vouch for the quality of the glass. It justifies the hype in every way possible. Great video and good to see an artist having a good hand at machining things. Only good can come out of this channel.

    • @GxAce
      @GxAce  5 років тому +2

      For sure! This is definitely miles away from a true cinema camera, but just like the 5D back in the day, this is an extremely promising glimpse into the future of what is possible and if you wanted to take the time to fight against the drawbacks of this camera, you could get a look that is hard to replicate otherwise. Thank's for the encouragement! I'm hoping to have some more machining videos in the neat future, but real life has been slowing down my youtube progress

    Hasselblad is cool. But I'm waiting for the Fuji medium format camera. Hopefully the video functions will be better with less rolling shutter warble.
    Personally, I'm not too interested in Medium format anamorphic as I feel the charm of Medium format is the full screen large image with shallow depth of field with no distortion on wide angle lenses.
    I'm on the fence though. Is it really all that different compared to Full Frame or even APSC? Technically, the answer is yes. But will the audience know the difference on screen? A lot of your shots don't say, WHOA! TOTALLY DIFFERENT! Is it just a geek out technicality for pixel peepers and image fiends like us? Or something vastly different worth the extra bucks on a rental.
    You're shots are great!

  • @VariTimo
    @VariTimo 5 років тому

    What is your taking lens on this setup? I think the most spectacular combo would be the anamorphic lens with the Mamiya 80mm f1.9. You’d actually get a 35mm (FF eqv.) horizontal field of view with a f1 (FF eqv.) depth of field. That’s the only case I can think of where medium format would beat out full frame minimum depth of field wise.

    • @GxAce
      @GxAce  5 років тому

      Unfortunately with these anamorphic projector lenses you need a 35mm equiv focal length of 85mm to avoid seeing the actually anamorphic lens in the image. You unfortunately cannot go wider. I was using the Zeiss Sonnar 150mm f/4 which is an 85mm equiv on 6x4.5.

  • @tubecorr

    It's a shame the camera doesn't use the full sensor height for video. It would be really useful for anamorphic shooting if cameras offered more aspect ratios in video mode.

    Hello, loved the video man :) Can you give me some specs please? I'm trying to replicate the field of view inside a 3D software for doing renderings. So what lenses can you put the anamorphic lens on? I know that the H6D has a sensor size of 53.4 by 40 mm. And what is the "stretch factor" or "squeeze factor" does your anamorphic lens has?

    The rolling shutter is due to all the glass in the way right? Any chance of footage without with anamorphic setup?

    • @GxAce
      @GxAce  5 років тому +1

      Rolling shutter is actually caused by the CMOS sensor capturing the image line by line on the sensor so that the pixels at the top of the sensor record data before the pixels at the bottom causing the image to look slanted. This camera has such a huge sensor that the effect is amplified. Shooting with longer lenses does increase the effect because the images captured through the lens appear to be moving faster because of the zoom factor of the lens.
      I only shot a very small amount of video and only used the anamorphic setup.

    Hi, saw in the box that this is shot on an x-t3. Wondering if you tried anamorphic on this camera. Just very recently I bought x-t3, and I've been wanting to try anamorphic for a while, do the smaller aps-c sensor help to lower the budget?

    I have the 907x. If they followed this up with the H6D Multishot, that'd be the best thing ever. Are there any really wide anamorphic lenses out there you think I could adapt to my digital back? I have a friend on island, that has a 503 CW. We experimented mixing our camera's together. It worked, but took much experimentation to figure out. I think it did do video, but I couldn't figure it out.

    Is there any crop on the video though?
    There also seems to be some terrible rolling shutter.

    • @GxAce
      @GxAce  5 років тому +1

      Well, its a crop to 16x9 instead of the full sensor area, but that the same for any photo camera that shoots video. Yes, definitely a lot of rolling shutter, but that's to be expected with such a physically large sensor and a small camera without the extra processing power of say an Alexa 65
