  • Two of just twenty remaining McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom IIs in USAF service perform a formation takeoff and flybys at the 2016 EAA AirVenture airshow in Oshkosh, WI. These aircraft are QF-4 aerial target drones and are slated for destruction before the end of 2016. Eight of the aircraft will be destroyed next week alone.

      AirshowStuffVideos Thank fuck these are still flying. I actually came to this video to see the fate of the F-4s I saw that year but have yet to return. I feared the worst when the Air Force retired the rest of the QF-4s, but it looks like they’re still flying and as beautifully ugly as ever

    When my recon squad called for air support in Nam, F-4 Phantoms were sent out to us. They would make a strafing pass and hit their after burners as they flew up a mountain side toward us. The sound was primordial. It would vibrate your internal organs. If any NVA were still around they would be scared shitless just by the sheer nasty noise these things made.

    Used to sit in a sandbag bunker at the end of the Chu Lai airstrip in Vietnam, and watch the F4 "Smokers", in two plane elements, taking off directly over our heads with full bomb and missile loads outbound to targets. Talk about LOUD! Full afterburners and going for the brass ring. They would be just a few hundred feet overhead, and then zoom out of sight headed inland. Impressive sight.

    Had the good fortune to spend four years flying the F4E in early seventies. It was the multi role fighter of its era, bomb truck, dive bomber, interceptor and dogfighter. It was the experience of my lifetime, hard to believe the subsequent fifty years have gone by so fast.
    Some mention the smoke, there is an interesting back story to this. The engines were tuned to run "rich" to keep the turbine inlet temperature down. This contributed to the remarkable reliability of the J79. It was possible to lean the mixture by installing modified burner cans that largely got rid of the smoke, but this led to significantly reduced tbo. It was a $$s thing, in the end most operators opted for the smoke

      @jimbo6413 3 роки тому +6

      @@Paul33500 The MiG 21was certainly more maneuverable than the F4, but that doesn't necessarily make it a better aircraft. Properly flown, using "zoom and boom" tactics, the Phantom could dictate the terms of engagement. As long as the Phantom driver didn't make the mistake of getting into a turning fight with a MiG then he had a pretty good chance of shooting his adversary out of the sky. That said, the MiG 21, the MiG 17 and the MiG 19 were all formidable opponents and a Phantom driver underestimated these aircraft at his peril, but none were superior to the F4.

    F-4 Phantom-- fastest way to turn JP4 into smoke and noise. A co-worker was a mechanic on a carrier during Vietnam. He said it was common for the Phantoms to return with vegetation hanging off various parts of the a/c. This was from flying into debris from exploding bombs dropped by a/c ahead of them on the bomb run. Flying that fast and close to the weeds you don't have time to think about what could go wrong, just fly the mission.

    Only the US Military can take a 18 year old kid playing grab ass in the high school halls and in a few months train him and turn him into one of the finest propulsion mechanics on the J-79. Here it is 37 years later and not a day goes by that I don’t think about working the flight line launching F-4’s...The sounds, the smell, the sight of a Phantom rumbling down the runway on takeoff will always be with me...

    My uncle flew these in the Viet Nam conflict. Mostly as ground support. His last assignment, was flying the “wild weasel” missions. Which I understand was to fly over known SAM sites, as fast as they would go, drawing missile fire. Then, the F14’s or F 16’s would come in, and blow them up.

    • @zeeeman8744

      Richard Bramley there were no F-14’s or F-16’s in Vietnam. But kudos to your uncle, that’s a special kind of aviator !

    Its a shame they are blowing up these examples, but it is a warriors death. Here in Korea Ive had the honor of seeing some of the ROKAF flying some of their active duty F-4s out of Osan a few times. Its strange to see them flying in formation with the F-22s, but definitely a unique experience.

    Damn...they're still beautiful as in '54 when gave Uncle Xmas card w/T-38 Talon Trainer pencil drawing AND F-4 crayon drawing both in 6 views. DOD needed single engine trainer plus fighter/bomber, but both designs twins. Uncle worked for DOD, said he'd forward both, got on phone, said "Well, crayon drawings look like a really pissed off eagle, & pencil drawings look like 1000 MPH bullet". Dad gave Uncle ride to Detroit taking his "card" to D.C. & this was on Xmas. Designs solved stability breaking sound barrier problems & F-4 actually went over 1500 MPH! Both Planes produced by end of decade, Uncle got promoted, I got suspended from Kindergarten for having swiped Dad's Top Secret Security Clearance Card for "Show & Tell", which he didn't have. I got on bus every morning - went up town screwing off - caught bus back home at noon. Worked really well for 2 weeks until School Secretary phoned Mom to bring me back as suspension ended, & sht hit fan!

    It's sad to hear South Korea is retiring this magnificent bird. We'll always look back fondly on the parts of our lives when J79s still howled, and every single time we see these in museums, we can rest assured that we got our money's worth out of it, and it can rest in honor with its myriad of achievements long remembered.

    • @SirensAndAlarmsOfNorthernIL
      @SirensAndAlarmsOfNorthernIL Рік тому

      It’s on, but dim. I think it’s not injecting as much fuel into the afterburner as it needs to

  • @SirensAndAlarmsOfNorthernIL

    Is it just me or does it feel like most demos of these, people either use a mic that doesn’t pick up the true power of the sound of the engines or sometimes they use a cheap mic that gets maxed out easily? Wonder what mic do you use bc this is one of those that sounds good. Ik for a fact that GE J-79s aren’t anything but quiet lmfao. Sounds just as loud as the EA-18 growlers I have seen recently and those so far were the loudest fighter jets I’ve heard, blowing every F-22 I’ve seen out of the water in terms of noise

    the grey phantom is not smoking as much as the green one this was a modification I believe anyone have more information about this?

    • @jivebomber4536
      @jivebomber4536 7 років тому

      It's two kinds of engines: the regular, and the low-smoke. Both are J-79s, but one burns hotter and kicks out less smoke. The grey aircraft has one of each which is why he does have some smoke signature.
