  • Warning from Space (Japanese: 宇宙人東京に現わる, Hepburn: Uchūjin Tokyo ni arawaru, lit. 'Spacemen Appear in Tokyo') is a Japanese tokusatsu science fiction film released in January 1956 by Daiei, and was the first Japanese science fiction film to be produced in color. In the film's plot, starfish-like aliens disguised as humans travel to Earth to warn of the imminent collision of a rogue planet and Earth. As the planet rapidly accelerates toward Earth, a nuclear device is created at the last minute and destroys the approaching world.
    The film, directed by Koji Shima, was one of many early Japanese monster films quickly produced after the success of Toho's Godzilla in 1954. The film was loosely based on a novel by Gentaro Nakajima. After release, the film was met with negative reviews, with critics calling it "bizarre" and accusing it of using science fiction clichés. Warning from Space influenced many other Japanese science fiction films, such as Gorath. The film, along with other 1950s tokusatsu science fiction films, influenced director Stanley Kubrick, who would later direct 2001: A Space Odyssey.

    This film is pretty amazing when you put it into historical context. Japan surrendered a mere 10 years earlier and the entire country was still recovering. Life was *extremely* difficult, and the Japanese people were making sci-fi films. Incredible.

    All of the fear, the anguish, the crazy static from the transistor radios, all of this,all this, if only someone would've called - The Prince Of Space!

    Tokyo, everything's happening in Tokyo. Godzilla, Gamera, Flying Saucers, you name it. I just clicked on the thumbnail, but then I couldn't resist watching this, now I wish it was wide screen. Japanese have interesting take on aliens. Great stuff.

    When I was kid I loved this stuff. Every Saturday morning you'd find me glued to the floor getting my weekly fix of horror and science fiction. No matter how bad it was it was better than growing up in the dull suburbs.

    When a movie begins with a balloon full of red paint splashing against a wall you know it’s going to be epic. But seriously, I remember this movie from when I was a kid. It was released under the title, “Invasion of The Star Creatures”.

    I keep thinking of how dedicated to science and technology post WWII Japan seemed to be. The emperor -that's Hirohito, by the way - may have started a tradition of researcher monarchs with research on fish, leading to academic work on various subjects by his successors Akihito and Naruhito.

    • @Rickyrab
      @Rickyrab 12 днів тому

      As for Hirohito, yeah, I know, pretty controversial person due to WWII itself, but be survived the war and arguably redeemed himself.

    Come on y'all. Plan 9 was crap. This film had a real live budget. It had a legitimate plot. And dance scenes! Tap dancing, even a Caribbean number! But why did Tokyo have to evacuated if the world was going to blow up? Yeah, the rest of it was quite plausible!

    Leave it to the Japanese to create a movie that rivals "Plan 9" for being so bad. And their space creatures, where do they come up with such creatures. Still, fun to watch. Joe S

      I mean, if you ignore the cultural and social contexts, forget the fact that the effects they used in this movie were cutting edge at a time when scifi movies were few and far between, and throw out the notion that this movie inspired a LOT of modern films then I guess it’s boring. But that’s a lot of mental gymnastics for me. I’d rather appreciate it for its content and contributions without basically needing to hollow out my own brain than call it boring. That’s just me tho.
