I clearly remember my stint in Libya while working for a construction company in Wafa, near the border with Algeria. That is part of the Sahara Desert and the place is really inhospitable. Too hot during summer and a long cold winter from October to early May. We have to endure the worst sandstorms in our lives. I have experienced sandstorms in Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar, but Libyan sandstorm is the worst.
Such a great movie -- action and romance plus comic one-liners ! Maureen O. and John Payne so good together and was enjoyable to see D'Silva play a good guy. Thoroughly enjoyable film !
When the movie came out I was 2 and it was one of the top movies to be shown on the brand new invention color TV. Every weekend these old color dress up movies were shown. Over and Over and Over.

This Grade B Hollywood "historical epic" was made during the Cold War and was seen in movie theaters around the world. The "message" was that all AMERICANS, especially US Marines, were "good guys" who would go anywhere to fight for Truth-Justice and the American Way. Just as the USA did in WWII (only 5 years in the past), Americans wanted to be friends with all "good people" because, deep down, they were "just like us", even in the North African desert. The other "message" was that in the 1950s Maureen O'Hara was Hot; especially in Technicolor.
I love the whole wonderful story. The hero, his rich friend/ second, the tough guy sargent that knows all the tricks of native people and the FAKE rich girl with her servent/ big sister friend. The sargent and the servent both have good hearts and they should get them together in a behind the scenes romance that work together to management help for their charges to accomplish the mission and a happy ending. I have not seen this movie before, that I can remember.
Maureen Ohara was beautiful and there were some very handsome men around this time; John Payne, Tyrone Power, Robert Taylor, Clark Gable, Gregory Peck, Gary Cooper to name a few.
Interesting that most of this movie was filmed in the Palm Springs, Calif desert. Many years before the interstate and development. I recognize all the locations.
Ah the eternal friendly rivalry between the Marines and the Navy. The former thinks of the latter as a taxi service whilst the commonly held belief of the Navy is that the Marines are an acceptable substitute for ballast. All joking aside, really do enjoy seeing classics like this.
Question: "Are you willing to have a fight in a phone booth?" Army: "Only if I can bring 1000 of my friends." Air Force: "Only if it flies and the enemy isn't in the phone booth." Navy:"Assuming it has sufficient hot water and breakfast, sure." Marines:"Do I get hand grenades?"
We've forgotten how to write movies, among other stuff. That's my biggest gripe with many modern films, the writing is AWFUL, and once you've seen these old classics, you can't help but notice it!
part of the reason why the dialogue had many double mean or seem spicy at time was cause of censors. You couldn't flat out say some of the bedroom stuff you can get away with now so they often use double meaning that adult would pick up on but was clean enough censor didn't object. The other part is a lot of the script writing was still base from plays which needed dialogue to carry the film. As Movies shifted more and more toward big actions sequences and special effects plus the lack of censor penalizing for blunt speech, dialogue became more realistic. Things we lost as movie modernize are for example actor facial expressions. As most actor had some theater training big showy movement to and facial expressions to tell a story without words was slowly phased out for realistic mannerisms. Plus modern hollywood lost interesting faces and looks. It seem every major star look nearly the same and no one stand out from the pack that much just from their features. I could rant on but yeah hollywood have morph a lot after a 100 years of film making
Always liked Maureen O'Hara. She was very good friends with John Wayne. Her last movie that I saw with her in it was the one with John Candy, where he was a fireman. She was still a beautiful woman. 🎦
I watched this in the 1960's thought it was good but imagined it was just Hollywood but just watched it again in 2024 and read up about it, they did attack with a force of 8 men! The film is largely true what a daring action.

First military action for the American Marines outside of an American soil !!!! That is why they are mentioning ~~ "shores of Tripoli" ~~ in their lovely song !!!! Yo !! :o) I got it now !!
I'll never forget my disappointment as a kid who enthralled by John Wayne rushed to do my homework and chores to be able to watch a western on tv only for it to be ...yes,John Payne. I never forgave him ...
This was the USA's first special forces operation. Our earliest overseas adventures were a remarkable prelude to our latest ones. In real life this one was more successful than any of us could believe, especially after the humiliating fiasco that preceded it. However, there were no babes along on the operation. Everyone interested in military history should read about these events, which are almost forgotten today. We need a new (and better) movie about it.
And despite all the comments, the inaccuracies of the film, a recent tome pretty well spelt it out... the Marines never quite made it to Tripoli, Jefferson went on paying tribute under the table, and the Philadelphia (our newest warship) was surrendered, along with its crew to the Berbers. Wish I remembered the book title, came out around 2007, very good read and funny. Mostly from the Ambassador's diary.

Paying tribute makes more sense than trying to root out the pirates permanently. To keep them from re-surging some ongoing investment in occupying the coastline would be required. But this would make the seas safe for American merchant shipping, and British and French and Spanish and Italian and any other nation that would not be paying a dime for the service. Ultimately, the pirates made too much of a nuisance of themselves and they were rooted out at the expense of the Royal Navy.
Slight discrepancies in the movie. The" American" they were sent to rescue was actually a guy and by latest reports looked nothing like Candice Bergen. And Sean Connery with his Scottish accent playing "the Arab Chieftain"=HILARIOUS. But Brian Keith did do a great impersonation of T.R.
I read the book about this action. I believe it was the first deployment of U.S. Marines on foreign soil. The overland trek was monumental and the local Arabs they recruited could not be trusted but eventually they prevailed over the Barbary Coast Pirates. It was because of them that the Canal du Midi through France was built.

Tripoli: Jefferson's Greatest Foreign Policy Failure. Opposite of the 1950 movie. My sources are history books from 1965 & 1971. I wonder if the historians were thinking about this movie when they included details that contradict 95% of the movie. I was a little confused because this film's title "Tripoli" is immediately followed by the word "Action" which could, perhaps, be made less ambiguous if it were at least written as "action" instead. Anyway, it's a lovely find.
This is of course based on the Battle of Derna 1805, what is not mentioned is that it was Hamet Karamanli that attacked and captured the Governor's Palace. Eaton led a courageous attack by the Greek mercenaries on the harbour defenses. Also it fails to mention that the Americans double crossed Hamet and signed a treaty with his brother that he soon broke. The mercenaries never received all their pay either. Not exactly a high point in American history.
Richard Holman the mercs were assholes and no one liked Hamet, anyway. Also it's a dumb 50s movie. Of course it's going to be sensational. Real life usually isn't so one sided or satisfying.

Alec Kushmerek it’s been so long I don’t even remember, man and I don’t even remember writing this. I think I had just got done reading Six Frigates by Ian Toll or something.
I recommend you read Brian Kilmeade's Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirate's for the true story. The real ruler was double- crossed by the U S state department. In fact he gifted a sword to the U S, which became the symbol of the Marine Corp.

I really enjoy these old movies. No whiz bang, bells and whistles. The needed to write dialogue. Actual sets, no CGI, That is what makes it for me.
My grandson is a direct descendant to O Bannon. When he joined the marines they made a big fuss over it. He was blown away.

the Navy was a poor taxi service, every time we did landings, I still got wet so much for getting us on shore dry.

Love Howard Da Silva. He was great in "unconquered" an the Best Ben Franklin in 1776 musical. These were ACTORS!!

This was the USA's first special forces operation. Our earliest overseas adventures were a remarkable prelude to our latest ones. In real life this one was more successful than any of us could believe, especially after the humiliating fiasco that preceded it. However, there were no babes along on the operation. Everyone interested in military history should read about these events, which are almost forgotten today. We need a new (and better) movie about it.

And despite all the comments, the inaccuracies of the film, a recent tome pretty well spelt it out... the Marines never quite made it to Tripoli, Jefferson went on paying tribute under the table, and the Philadelphia (our newest warship) was surrendered, along with its crew to the Berbers. Wish I remembered the book title, came out around 2007, very good read and funny. Mostly from the Ambassador's diary.
From what I learned what you said is only part of the story. The US Navy & Marines kept going it took a few years but did win. Take a look at :

Paying tribute makes more sense than trying to root out the pirates permanently. To keep them from re-surging some ongoing investment in occupying the coastline would be required. But this would make the seas safe for American merchant shipping, and British and French and Spanish and Italian and any other nation that would not be paying a dime for the service.
Ultimately, the pirates made too much of a nuisance of themselves and they were rooted out at the expense of the Royal Navy.

Slight discrepancies in the movie. The" American" they were sent to rescue was actually a guy and by latest reports looked nothing like Candice Bergen. And Sean Connery with his Scottish accent playing "the Arab Chieftain"=HILARIOUS. But Brian Keith did do a great impersonation of T.R.

I read the book about this action. I believe it was the first deployment of U.S. Marines on foreign soil. The overland trek was monumental and the local Arabs they recruited could not be trusted but eventually they prevailed over the Barbary Coast Pirates. It was because of them that the Canal du Midi through France was built.

Tripoli: Jefferson's Greatest Foreign Policy Failure. Opposite of the 1950 movie. My sources are history books from 1965 & 1971. I wonder if the historians were thinking about this movie when they included details that contradict 95% of the movie. When the land force arrived, the captured Navy crew had already negotiated peace with the ruler who started the war. 10 years later the pirate nests were finally destroyed.

I was a little confused because this film's title "Tripoli" is immediately followed by the word "Action" which could, perhaps, be made less ambiguous if it were at least written as "action" instead. Anyway, it's a lovely find.
They were both in to the shores of Tripoli together 8 years earlier 💚
This is of course based on the Battle of Derna 1805, what is not mentioned is that it was Hamet Karamanli that attacked and captured the Governor's Palace. Eaton led a courageous attack by the Greek mercenaries on the harbour defenses. Also it fails to mention that the Americans double crossed Hamet and signed a treaty with his brother that he soon broke. The mercenaries never received all their pay either. Not exactly a high point in American history.
Richard Holman the mercs were assholes and no one liked Hamet, anyway. Also it's a dumb 50s movie. Of course it's going to be sensational. Real life usually isn't so one sided or satisfying.

I recommend you read Brian Kilmeade's Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirate's for the true story. The real ruler was double- crossed by the U S state department. In fact he gifted a sword to the U S, which became the symbol of the Marine Corp.
The gift of the sword may have been a myth. Nothing is said of the incident until 1917.
