Pauline is the first damsel in distress, disappears for 30 years, (save for the Mario and Donkey Kong games,) and suddenly comes back as the mayor of a giant city. What an absolute icon.
When Pauline does that little skippy trot dance, the music is playing a rendition of the background music of the original Donkey Kong arcade game and Pauline's dance mimics the 2 frame animation she had up there next to ol' DK. That's some loving attention to detail
Pauline: *Throws a party for Mario for saving the city one time.* Peach: *Kidnapped hundreds of time, has done nothing but bake cake for Mario.* Daisy: *Learns lesson after being kidnapped once.* Peach: *Kidnapped hundreds of times and still hasn’t learned a lesson.*
This feels like one of those rare times Nintendo actually shows genuine appreciation for their fans beyond their money. This one moment feels like the “Sonic Mania” of the Mario franchise.
Not gonna lie, when I got to this part of the game, tears were pouring down my face. I've been playing Mario games since Donkey Kong, and seeing the festival being an ode and literal celebration of Mario, it hit me hard how formative these games were to me. You guys made a masterpiece, Nintendo.
This game looks pretty bad honestly, but Mario has been very important to me over the years. I won't let it ruin that moment, when I finally play this.
This part isn’t just the most iconic scene in Mario Odyssey or even the franchise, but in video game history. New Donk City felt like a New Years celebration from start to finish.

Don Feik you only see four main sequences? Don’t you see the little tidbits in-between? Not trying to be rude but I think that’s what’s also referred to here. Also, in an actual concert, it takes a lot of effort to sing and dance at the same time so I thought maybe it’s why she doesn’t perform a full-on musical, you know. And there weren’t any other hand movements or dances they could go with this song. At least, I think so
They are unique animations. Show me where do they use those animations outside of this section. She's even wearing a unique outfit just for this song. Don't misrepresent what the original comment said. Nobody said there's no looping, just that they put a lot of effort in a small section that many players won't even notice.
You know that "a couple" means 2, right? Don Feik was either trolling or didn't really pay attention. There are 8 or more different variations: 2 different ways of swinging side to side, the jumping animation, the 3 gestures it does during the "1-up girl" move, the swinging during the "odyssey yaa see", the spinning around, the start when it snaps the fingers, etc. That's not counting the eye movement and lip syncing, like you mentioned. I've seen real world dances with less moves.
It’s so awesome to see Pauline in a canon Super Mario game! And this mission absolutely brought a tear to my eye and the biggest smile I had in years! Fan service done right! Absolutely a wonderful game! One of the most magical and amazing games Nintendo has ever made!
Couldn't agree more, I actually stopped playing when I got to the end of this level and danced to this great song. It's so damn catchy, Kate Higgins sang this beautifully.

I wish my first reaction to this song was not the e3 trailer... It would of made this moment much more awesome... IT WAS STILL AMAZING AND MEMORABLE THOUGH! Seriously this might be my favorite part of this phenomenal game. Game of the year and best Mario game of all time for me.
love how you stopped to hear the full song with one heart left, i did the same exact thing :D This is why I love video games. It actually brought tears of joy to my eyes when I played it.
The best tribute ever made to our beloved franchise. I remember crying all level long, so much joy. So much easter eggs. So much passion. Ah, I loved this game. And what a song. Thanks Nintendo.
I actually caught that too when I was first played through it and just listened to the song. I actually laughed when I caught it because it shows how much they care about the fans and this game.
when I found out about Pauline, she instantly became my favorite Mario girl. Peach wasn’t really my favorite, even though she’s pretty and the iconic one. I really liked Daisy more than her. But, Pauline, she’s amazing! She needs to get more recognition today! (Despite her being in the previous games and all. She wasn’t a familiar character. At least with me) I hope Pauline appears more in future Mario games
At 1:02 the gentleman says "Jump man, jump." This is a little easter egg paying homage to the character before he was designated as Mario. In 1981, Mario was called Jumpman.
A real staple in the Mario series. Best moment of the game for me and one I won't forget. The song and the whole festival, it had nostalgia, emotion and a heck of character throughout. Really makes you love Mario and Pauline generally as characters. Although Peach gets a little bit of time later on, its still nothing compared to this segment. Really made the game so memorable for me. Suppose catchy music with powerful lyrics will always do that. Just screams charm with Mario and Pauline dancing whilst she sings that. Rest of the game is wonderful and a joy to play too. Have to say its the best Mario game in years and if you put Nostalgia aside, you could argue its the best there has ever been. Loved Galaxy and Mario 64 , Sunshine was nice too but this put a huge smile on my face for sure.
I agree with all of that. I grew up playing SM64 and it was revolutionary for its time and outside the camera it had been for so long for me the supreme Mario gaming experience. I’m usually also Captain Nostalgia lol. That said, Odyssey completely blew me out of the water. They had callbacks to classic Mario games, characters, and gaming elements. Introduced creative new gameplay for the Mario series which could be the future of Mario gaming. I hadn’t seen Charging Chucks in years. Another great final Mario/Bowser showdown. Getting to play as Bowser. New Donk City first un-Mario like environment in a Mario game. The soundtrack. My personal fav Mario gaming experience for sure and that’s no disrespect on the others.
Same. Sunshine was my all time favorite for the longest time, but after getting over 500 moons so far, I think Odyssey is definitely the most "complete" 3D Mario and maybe even the best one. Quite the amazing experience, and then it just doesn't end. Iwata would be proud.
Dude I only ever played SMB1 on an android emulator and this sequence gave me so much pure joy that it's hard to describe. It's just so well done, and NDC is such a fantastic level as well as an awesome virtual version of NYC.
This level sent my soul into another universe. I cried through the whole thing. This level reaches into your soul and reminds you of every single memory you had playing a Mario game. I found myself wanting to continue but not wanting the level to end. An actual masterpiece.
@@alfredohumberto2222 If Mayor Pauline’s still at New Donk City @ Metro Kingdom from Super Mario Odyssey, then questions are: why isn’t her younger sister, Daniella Verducci Mario with her older sister, as a co-mayor, why can’t Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, Tiny Kong, Funky Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Baby DK, Cranky Kong, Wrinkly Kong, and Candy Kong appear in New Donk City, and why can’t King K. Rool, General Klump, Krusha, and the Kritters (Green, Blue, Red & Brown) appear in New Donk City with Mayor Pauline?
Literally one of the best moments in video game history! Even my parent who played the original mario bros game watched me play this and were so happy!
When the trailer that featured "Jump Up Super Star" first came out, I'm not afraid to say that I was watering my eyes like crazy. This was a perfect game!!
I never thought a game this new could still bring such an emotion. But I got teary eyed playing through this, it's such a beautiful nostalgic tribute, the song is amazing, just so well done. Really cool way for the game to pay homage to Mario, the games that I've spent all my life playing
Pauline really got kidnapped once, stayed close and got her own figurine from Mario (I forgot which game), kept to herself and ended up being the Mayor of a huge city. ICONIC
This is a letter of appreciation from Nintendo to all of us who grew up playing Mario. Thank you Miyamoto-san and everyone involved. And thank you to all you handsome gorgeous nintendo fans:)
Pauline's back and forth "see-saw" shimmy dance is actually her idle animation from her original appearance in Donkey Kong as she's waiting to be rescued by Mario.
Pauline is super adorable and glamourous, I hope she joins the cast of the super Mario ladies in next multiplayer video games now that she's finally famous among the players! We need more girl power in Super Mario!
This sequence feels like its pulled out of a Disney Animation, it's so whimsical. Nintendo is one of the few devs that make games that feel like they did at a simpler time. In today's super serious dark triple -A productions, Odyssey reminds everyone that a game doesn't need edgy dialogue ,guns, explosions or complex story lines to be good, at the end of the day all a game really needs to be is just fun.
Too poor to afford a Switch, but the first time I saw the Festival level on UA-cam, tears came down from my eyes. Can't imagine the emotion that you guys in first-world countries felt when playing it the first time
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the band members in the back? I mean one of them JUMPS at 6:25! Edit: 6:33 also has alot of animations for the Members in the back. I love the attention on the little details. It makes me want to JUMP UP IN THE AIR
Whoa! I’m tripping right now! Here’s why: when Super Mario 64 was first released, I imagined a Mario game where he would be dancing at a concert. 22 years later and exactly one day after I turn 30 years old, a Mario game gets released where he’s dancing at a concert. 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
@@Idk-ru4fl No, Jumpman is Mario himself. It's never revealed who Mario and Luigi's parents are, but it's definately not Jumpman and Pauline. According to the canon lore of the Mario series. Mario is Jumpman, Mario debuted in the DK Arcade game. And Pauline was Mario's girlfriend at one point until they break up and Peach ended up as Mario's main love interest.
@@king_tpose3285 All the "sources" that says Jumpaman is Mario's father are fanmade, which means these "fans" spread wrong info. Nintendo themselves confirm numerous times that Mario is Jumpman himself. Have you ever played Donkey Kong 94 for Gameboy? That's a canon Mario game made by Nintendo that heavily confirms that Mario is Jumpman. And Super Mario Odyssey also made it clear that Mario is Jumpman. What Mario game says otherwise? The answer is none.
I played this part so terribly, because of how filled with emotion I was. The awesome song, the fireworks in the background, and the fact that it was one large tribute/throwback to where it all started. Thank you, Miyamoto-san :)

We should be reminded of him. Iwata made a real difference and impacted the industry for decades.
I almost cried when I first got to this part, it's just so breathtaking and I'm really glad Nintendo put this in Odyssey. Absolutely outstanding
Definitely. If this doesn't win GOTY I don't know what will. Odyssey is a masterpiece and always will be

I love you mario all
The best tribute ever made to our beloved franchise. I remember crying all level long, so much joy. So much easter eggs. So much passion. Ah, I loved this game. And what a song. Thanks Nintendo.
Reminder that Pauline's dance during the "Odyssey, ya see" part is her movement from the original Donkey Kong game.
The more you know.

You deserve a cookie for catching that reference 🍪

Or the BTS "DID YOU SEE MY BAG" dance from Mic Drop
I actually caught that too when I was first played through it and just listened to the song. I actually laughed when I caught it because it shows how much they care about the fans and this game.
Pauline is too precious. Mario must want to be a prince to prefer airhead Peach over this musical mayor.
when a 2D game console company icon dances better than u
BluesHooves I’ve actually been trying to practice his dance move lol
I have a feeling that this game was made to make people feel nostalgic, heck they even put in the Mario 64 outfit.
Just A Guy I’m pretty sure that was the approach with this game.
Just A Guy Not only a outfit but a level also
Not completely....No 8bit outfit.....Imagine if THAT outfit is in the game....Ultimate....Nostalgia......Fan service....Sigh? DLC content maybe?
I just wanted my isle delfino, but of course another 64 level....
Hard to make a 8-bit outfit in 3D unfortunately, when it was first in 2D... But if they can do that, man. That'd be incredible.
Pauline: I'm back
Mario: Peach, We broke up my ex is back

"Oh, it will be a cool music festival, ok...."

"OMG I was not expecting this!"
Was it just me that jumped on Pauline's head to see what happens though? lol
@@metalherolionboy yeah when it stopped the sibging I immediately stoped and went back to vibin
when I found out about Pauline, she instantly became my favorite Mario girl.
ZeldaNirvanaSpirit Kinda hard since she technically isn't a Mario character, she's a Donkey Kong character.

At 1:02 the gentleman says "Jump man, jump." This is a little easter egg paying homage to the character before he was designated as Mario. In 1981, Mario was called Jumpman.

Hey Jumpman, Jump!!!
I really love it how Pauline and the band is in sync with the music, it's beautiful. better than the 30 years of saving peach.
Can I just say that I love it when Pauline scats at 7:51 while Mario and Cappy get the multi- moons? It just sounds so good!

Mario’s dancing is so cute 😂

especially dancing with Pauline
