Great idea for a video! I wish I had done this before my thru hike in 2013. I kept most things I started with but I’d love to revisit it now that there’s so much better stuff! I’ve definitely made changes for my wife and I’s thru in 2025.
You probably don't remember flying past a 13-yr-old (Hawkeye) and his 50-ish dad (Waffle) in '19, but i'm sure I remember the infamous shorts blowing past somewhere in GA or early NC. We started with a 4-L Platypus Gravity system (we'll be making water for two, right?) but quickly switched to individual Sawyers. CNOC bags were the next big game changer. We learned so much in '19 (enough to make it to NJ) and we're planning a "do-over" hike starting in Feb '24.
You two cracked us up. Our first Shakedown hike... way way way "too prepared". BTW we will both be at Umstead this year. Hope to see ya. Rob and Johna.
This is funny! I have never seen anyone do this before! I committed literally every thru hiking mistake known to man. Luckily, they aren't documented on video, LOL. It's cool that we can all laugh and learn from our experiences.
My first backpack trip, my backpack weighed 5 lbs empty. And my friend and I carried MRI’s. Whoo! My whole set including water now is 25 lbs. what a difference experience makes. But I’m with you for sure on a good pillow.
Haha but I do disagree about compression bags. Can totally make my quilt so small in the bottom and also keep it clean. The most important thing to keep clean and dry, IMO. Happy trails.🤘🏻🥾⛰️
Very entertaining - you and Jonathan make a good team. I wish I could recoup all of the money I've spent on backpacking gear over the past 25 years. It's a learning process for sure, and I will be forever seeking the perfect gear to hike with. The irony is there is no such thing as perfect gear. Hiking is 95% NOT about the gear you carry - at least based on my experience.
Great video guys! Most nights weren't too bad in 2019 so I usually stuffed my puffy into its own pocket and used it as my pillow. Just sent you an email.
Shows we all evolve as one becomes more experienced and as we learn what is really necessary. Such a great video.

I don’t remember! Especially in GA. We met and saw so many people. Congrats on getting back out there for a “do over” y’all are awesome!!

Jonathan is now the guest star.
That had me crack up 😄
That was a good comical video.
Hey Tara - you guys were cracking me up with this one! Love the reaction video's!
Thanks Jester! It was a really fun one to make
Funny and informative. Enjoyed it. Hoping to make it onto the AT in 2023. Thanks for your ongoing work on this channel.
Great video. I like what I carry and I'm sure I'll hear criticism for some of it too. This was a fun revisit of your hiking gear. Thanks for sharing!
please come back....haha. Those pillow manuevers were expert level JD. Great video y'all

Pillow is a must for me 😁
this was delightful. Thanks y'all.
Thanks for watching 😁
Great video! But would also be interesting to see what clothes you guys wore back then and how your clothes have changed.

Thanks for watching and your comment. To each their own with compression bags! Some have them others don’t
Love it!
Great job. I used 3 different packs and never ate any of the food items I had on my pre hike videos.
Thanks Screwball!
I absolutely loved this. The pot holder sent me😂
Yes… we were so overly confident in these things. It’s humorous
