  • Spring Garden Tour: A Multitude of Potato Varieties
In this short May 2024 garden tour video, we show you what is growing in May in our zone 5 garden, and we show you our potato beds which are now filled with a huge variety of seed potatoes. Some of our seed potatoes we saved from last year's harvest, and some of the seed potatoes are from Wood Prairie Family Farms.
We have a wide variety of vegetables that are already sprouting and taking off in our zone 5 gardening setup, but I think my favorite right now are those many varieties of potatoes. Those, and the GreenStalk vertical gardens that we have also setup and are currently tending.
If you are looking for a GreenStalk coupon code this is the place. If you need a Wood Prairie Family Farm coupon, we have you covered there too! All those items are linked in the description below.

Wonder if you've ever heard of this: Last year I added potato skins to my compost. I used that compost to amend my planting soil. All of my tomatoes were planted with that mix into grow bags. So far I have found two volunteer potato plants, and they're sprouting from those skins! I pulled them from the tomato bags and put them with potatoes, and they are growing! Both appear to be from store bought yellow potatoes.

Walking onions: They will grow and form a flower stem which starts off looking like a regular onion scape. These turn into bulblets called "topsets" Which are multiple miniature version of the bulb at the base. When the stems ripen and fall over, they will root and form new plants, some 30cm from its parent. This is why they should be planted directly in soil or a raised bed (to contain them) if you wish them to "walk" and multiply. Planting in containers will prevent them from "walking".

    Great spring garden tour!!
I’d love to see a video on the stinging nettle.

I haven't grown Egyptian Walking onions but from what I've seen at UA-cam U they will form new plants on those "scapes" that root when they fall over.
Looks like I may need to declare for Team Potato this year! That is a lot of varieties. It's going to be an interesting season.

I would love to see a video on stinging nettle. We have a fair amount of it on our property and were thinking about making tea for the plants.

That’s how the Egyptian Walking Onions “walk”…the bulbils get heavy, lean over and touch the soil. They sprout there, making new onions…you can divide the bulbs to give more space…those are kind of thick right now

Where do you get all those varieties of seed potatoes?

    • @GutenGardening

I typically obtain them from a combination of local nurseries and online stores. This year, we're excited to mention that most of the varieties we're planting are from Wood Prairie Family Farm. It's always enjoyable to experiment with new varieties each season!

@@GutenGardening Wow! it's a bit late but boy oh boy do they have the varieties. I am ordering 4 new potatoes for my garden. They will be getting in a bit late, my other potatoes are growing good but I just have to try some new ones! I'm going to have so much fun ordering my potatoes next year. I just might try every variety they have! Thank you so much!
