  • The Air Force Physical Ability and Stamina Test, commonly known as PAST, is to assess an Air Force candidate's current physical condition for potential entry into Air Force Special Warfare and Combat Support career fields. This video narrates and demonstrates the PAST elements. Note: Not all components are required for each career field. Consult your Special Operations Recruiter for more information.

    It is tougher getting back in shape now that I am 25. I wish I had just enlisted when I was 18 but better late than never and I am definitely more mentally prepared for selection now.
    I have been training for a couple months now and I would say I am good on everything but the swimming. It is tough to find the time to practice because I work so much. I think I would have to quit my job lol. So I am just working on my increasing my aerobic capacity with running.
    I started off not being able to run a mile straight and now I run 5-6 miles with a 20LB weighted vest and two 10LB dumbbells. I need to buy a rucksack and some heavier dumbbells/kettlebells to really simulate the training.
    Come this time next year, I will be ready.
    Hooyah!

      Hell I'm doing it at 34. By the time I get to the PAST I'll be 35. My biggest problem is the sit ups. I'm 205 and have about 10 lbs that will not go away around the midsection. Just gets in the way lol

    Do you take the PAST before or after basic?

    • @beepbeep3575
      @beepbeep3575 5 років тому +4

      Kaden Ruud I’ve been told that it’ll be taken multiple times before and after basic. As somebody who’s talking with a recruiter now I can definitely inform you that you’ll have to take it a couple times before basic as you pretty much have to compete with your peers to get selected into development, and once you’re in development you still take the PAST till they select you for A&S. Then you’ll get shipped off to basic and so on. So you’ll definitely have to take the PAST before, can’t say about after because I haven’t been there yet.

    • @YohanM99
      @YohanM99 5 років тому +2

      You have to take the past before you and after basic. it depends on what job you go for you have to pass the Past twice before basic. e.g PJ requires two passing PAST while EOD requires 1. After basic you will take the PAST multiple times before A&S.

    I can’t do a pull-up yet any tips?

    • @notenof
      @notenof 5 років тому +15

      Buy those pull up bars that can install to a door
      Then do 17-20 scapula pull up every time you go through the door, remember to keep your core tight and legs straight(any muscles you use that aren’t needed for pull ups propagate bad form, and waste energy)
      Once you can easily do scapula pull ups, try do Australian pull ups (at a smith machine or park) where your chest hits bar
      Those exercises should help you complete one clean pull up
      Once you can do one pull up, practice your pull up every time you go through the door
      Couple tips:
      Always prioritize form and grace over quantity and time, doing a bunch of CrossFit pull ups will just end you up with “Zeros”
      Do them through out the day and don’t do them during a designated time slot (doing 300 pull-ups in 10 hours is better than doing 300 in one hour)
      Loosing weight always makes pull ups easier but you shouldn’t prioritize loosing weight to get a better max
      And never half rep also aim to do a pull pull where your arms straight at the hanging position and your collar bone is in the plane as the bar

      That’s probably all you trained for though. These guys have to swim like this AND ruck anywhere from 4-12+ miles at a 15:00 mile pace at minimum usually with a 45 pound load minimum. Then there’s running 1.5 mile for time (usually 9:30 is a benchmark to see if you can hang), 3 mile in 21 minutes (18 minutes to hang), 5 mile in 40 minutes (35 to hang), and run 8+ miles at any time ready to go. 20+ pull-ups on a single go, 100+ push-ups, 100+ sit-ups, trap bar deadlift 325 minimum for 3 reps (competitive would be in the 400’s for reps), underwater swim 25m in 1:30 intervals (5 reps to hang), underwater swim 50m on a single breath, buddy breath with full harassment, knot tying series underwater, drown proof test in uniform, swim 3000+m in uniform and dive gear with a certain time limit in open ocean and current, be an expert marksman, learn various skill sets pertaining to the job, and this is all ENTRY LEVEL. It gets harder the longer you’re in it. Oh, and no guarantee you’ll eat sometimes throughout this training or have access to a personal trainer or take a day off to rest. After all of this is said and down, NOW you’re deployable to actually do your job. This is for a career. What you did was for sport and it could be a career but there is a very very big difference. To maintain all of these stats on a day to day basis without losing your mind, maintaining a family, promotions, finances, education, health, political changes, policies, etc., it’s a lot. And they’re good at it!

    Strength is not being measured…muscular endurance is. If muscular endurance is important, then so be it, but do not call it strength. At best, these tests might measure power, but even that is questionable.
