I've just bought the older AF-D version (2 ring). Way cheaper than a second hand Tamron or Sigma, and it oozes quality. I imagine modern lenses would beat it for wide open sharpness, but the 80-200mm AF-D is definitely sharp enough for portraits, and stopped down, for landscape too. The bokeh is smoooooth and cinematic.
@@cr8momentsldn51 That's a tough one as they are both good but the Tamron has quicker autofocus and VR so it is a great lens for the price. Depends on what sort of photography you do, if it's stills and portraits the Nikon may be slightly better quality and cheaper.
This is my favourite lens. It is sharper than my 35mm and 50mm primes. I absolutely love this lens. i have shot action with this and a D800 and they were pin sharp. Mine was 700 pounds new about 4 years ago. Definitely a tank.
Found one of these for 200$ at the local photography shop. For all of you asking, if it’s the AF-S version, it’ll work on any Nikon DSLR made past I think 2004. If it’s just the AF or AF-D you’ll need to have a camera that has a built in autofocus motor, but honestly, I just manually focus mine. I have the af-s version on a d800 but it’s such an easy lens to manually focus (even at 2.8 from 30 feet away) that the autofocus isn’t even necessary. This lens is unbeatable optically speaking. The images it produces are incredibly sharp with great contrast and color. If you can pick up any version of this, even if it’s the older push-pull one, you won’t regret it.
Nathan Sheets Im thinking in to pick one for My Sony A7. It is cheap(very cheap compare to Sony lens) and its sharp. So as you said its easy to manual focus + focus assist of Sony cameras (focus peaking) it will be a very strong combo. What do you think?
How is the silent wave motor holding up? Apparently, they were notorious for failing back then. Starts squeaking and squealing until it ultimately fails altogether
Also renders great on black and white film, like a prime lens would. I use it on a Nikon FE2, D700, D4 and adapted to fujifilm. Works well for video too.
Hi James, May I ask if your lens is the AFS vers.? I've found one of these for a very good price in mint condition, however, I have read on forums that the SWM in these are known to die and can't be repaired anymore. Do you still have this lens and have you had any problems? Thanks,

Hi Nikola. As far as image quality goes there is no difference from the older and much cheaper D600. Hi there. The lens in the review is the AF-S* version which is the last 80200mm version. Before that Nikon made the AF-D "two rings" non push pull lens which untill recentely was still on production (they stopped making this AF-S version but continued to make thee previous non motored lens). The AF-S has a total different optics from the AF versions. it has a built in silent motoer and these nice bottoms to hold down the focus on the front. It is the heaviest of all nikon 2.8 auto zoom lens to this day. I had the AF-D 2 rings version and after it was broken during cleanup at a local nikon lab I got me this Af-S version. itis a beast of a lens with superb sharpness second to none (it is as sharp as the vr2 yet has less focus breathing). It has minimum distortion and very low if any CA (the two rings AFD version suffered heavily from CA and purple fringing wide open). Boca is also quite magnificent. I have many high quality portrait lens in my bag inc the AFD 85/1.4 and the 135mm f/2 DC and this AF-S 80-200 beast is still used more than any of these for portraiture. The AF-C on the D800E and D5 with this lens work great too much better and faster than the AF-D 2rings version. All in all its a very good lens for sporst, wildlife and portraiture but one needs to remember the heavy weight and a secure carring technique.

How you focus when the cap is on??? You lost ur credibility....
Is this lens work with nikon d5300?
Is this F mount on a D4 / D800 ?
Hello, I have the Nikkor Telephoto 180mm F/2.8D IF-ED. I fear if I am asked to shoot something indoors or dark, the 180 will not be fast enough. Do you think I should get one like that?
Hi I have never tried the 180 but apparently it's amazing according to 'The Angry Photographer'. The Tamron 70-200 vr old version is a lot faster at auto focus apparently.
