It is very difficult to create a 25 microcosms for Chopin's 25 preludes. They are so different, so unique. Éric Heidsieck gives an exceptional performance. He is one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. He literally gives birth to 25 children with their own DNA. We hadn't heard anything so miraculous since Alfred Cortot, whose disciple he was. Simple coincidence? Eric often told me that the lessons of this great master went beyond the instrumental framework but were lessons with a philosophical dimension..

Je répondrais : assurément les Préludes de Chopin, Les Sonates de Beethoven bien sûr, et je n'ai jamais pu me résoudre à décider de la troisième œuvre... sans pleurer sur une quatrième ! Mais que dire des Préludes après Liszt, qui écrit : "ce sont des poèmes qui bercent l'âme en songes dorés", après Schumann, qui trouve une image fulgurante, alliant tout à la fois l'air, l'envol, mais aussi la force hautaine, implacable, et cependant la ruine : ''des plumes d'aigle", enfin, après George Sand, qui a ce mot merveilleux : ''en vous charmant l'oreille, ils vous navrent le cœur.’’ Alfred Cortot, lui, sut illustrer chacun de ces immortels lambeaux de musique... Mais doit-on, comme cet interprète unique, suggérer un titre à ses auditeurs ? N'imposons pas une vision picturale qui pourrait gêner certains... et tant mieux pourtant si celle-ci nous a aidés à suivre Chopin dans son rêve enfiévré.
Les Ballades furent inspirées par la lecture des Poèmes d'Adam Mickiewicz, ardent patriote Polonais, proscrit par les Russes. Mais Chopin retiendra l'esprit du poète plus que l'image de ses œuvres. Cependant si la Première Ballade (1836) se passe aisément de la lecture d'une légende lithuanienne se terminant par un banquet maudit, comment ne pas reconnaître en la Seconde (1838), le lac de glace bordé de fleurs mystérieuses et maléfiques ? Quant à la Troisième (1841), la musique est si près de son modèle littéraire qu'elle pourrait s'intituler "l'Ondine". Un jeune homme a juré fidélité à la jeune fille entrevue. Celle-ci s'éloigne et réapparaît sous la forme charmeuse d'une Ondine. A peine a-t-elle tenté le jeune homme qu'il succombe à l'ensorcellement. Puis, il sera entraîné dans l'abîme aquatique et condamné à poursuivre en gémissant l'ondine qu'il n'atteindra jamais.
Par contre Chopin semble s'être inspiré davantage du cadre, plus que de l'histoire du 4e Poème. (1842) Les saisons y sont évoquées par un Père anxieux du retour de ses fils. D'abord la mélodie y est comme figée, semblable à une terre immobilisée par le gel, puis progressivement, lors de la variation du Ier thème en sextolets, des courants souterrains nous entraînent à la dérive (accelerando) jusqu'à la chute torrentielle Alors la main gauche prend le rythme calme de la houle et le chant de la main droite est bienfaisant comme la première bouffée d'air marin..

Masterful rendition of Chopin. Fredryk lies in the cemetery of Pere - Lachaise, in Paris, like many other artists of the past and present times, but his heart, according to his last wills, was walled in Warsaw cathedral.

It’s amazingly how the pianist can feel so exactly slavic sadness.
Another superb release and with great techincal quality, as can only be expected from the team. Alas, you continually upload gems from the established repertoire ... in this catalogue are among the finest recordings of Chopin. So I find it difficult to change channel. Merci (as always) and especially for the great artists popular in France and so often ignored in the celebrity mad Anglo-Saxon world.

As with his Faure, Beethoven and even Bach, there's marvelous (seeming) spontaneity here. This is playing for a few friends, perhaps a salon but not a concert hall. To an American like me Heidsieck seems Gallic in the best modern sense: debonair, poetic, self-deprecating. The depths are all here minus grandiloquence. And if you find it works for Chopin, you may be surprised to find how persuasive Heidsieck is in Beethoven as well. His sonata cycle is an overlooked gem. Thanks for posting.

Sorry, but no.This performance reminds me of Charles Richard-Hamelin, and his performance of Chopin's piano concerto, 2nd movement. Hands everywhere, gestures saying: OH MY GOD, I'm playing Chopin's PC, LOOK AT ME! On the other hand, take a look on such pianists like Arturo Benedetti-Michelangeli or Jorge Bolet. 100% of focus, 0% of unnecessary expression.

What superlative examples of a musical narrative through heartfelt and deep understanding. Out of all pianists only Rubinstein and Cortot can equal this.....(in my opinion!). I'm not sure what's the matter with other peoples' audio equipment but mine is relaying amongst others at least two aspects of Heidsieck's playing which make him unsurpassable - rhythmic pacing and dynamic contrast. I hope people can loosen up,become more aware and allow themselves to enjoy these incomparable interpretations. Thank you for this amazing experience. Writing from Poland by the way!

Extraordinary...also a huge thank you to ClassicalMusic/Reference Recording, because listening to many of these recording is like reading a masterpiece that leads one on a journey to discover other gems...so many times I listened to the Preludes being dashed off one after another and because Chopin literally paralyzes me when listening, I accepted such recordings as given, but I tell you listening to Heidsieck changes all that...Listen to Ballade IV & finally understand the meaning of unreconciled grief...I know I have to find Alfred Cortot now...

Had never heard about Eric Heidsieck before now. The Preludes by Chopin are the most intriguing piano pieces, though he at one occasions called them his "scriblings" or such he knew how strongly they created moods and images.

I speak of the preludes; some things are interesting, I like singing in slow tempos, but in general, too fast, too loud, a lot of polyphony is lost in medium and fast tempos; strange accents are created; there is never lightness. Stolen too hasty ... But the preludes are one of the most difficult collections to interpret in all of Chopin's work. The quality of the recording, however, is excellent, and this favors the satisfaction. Thanks for uploading it.

Dear CMRR, thanks to bring Éric's works to a wider public! Yet I'm afraid he has only made these recordings for Cassiopée, 1972 Réf: 369 183 (25 Préludes) and 1976 Réf: 369 202 (4 Ballades), the two LP were reissued in cassettes as well as in one CD (2005), I'm doubt you get the CD and found it says produced in 2004?

in the ballade no.1 at around 48.57/8 he does an extra (intentional?) acciaccatura like 'trip' in bar 169. and other extra notes elsewhere Interesting
One really shouldn’t make comparisons, but when I hear Horszowski’s performance of the F sharp or the D flat, Lhévinne’s take on the B flat minor, and Moiseiwitsch’s on the G sharp minor, among others, I am left with a feeling of some disappointment as I listen to Heidsieck.
On the downside: very intrusive commercial interruptions! Right in the middle of etudes. Ugh! Please fix.

1. Recorded in 2004, ...but why such poor technical quality?
2. In my country, the performance of Martha Argerich is considered to be the recording of the century of Preludes, ...but personally I have a different opinion. Ups!
3. Chopin's Ballades were best recorded by Krystian Zimerman. Almost certainly.
4. I respect, ...but I don't think I understand this nomination. But it can be affected by this terrible technical quality.
Why do you present your own opinions in something as subjective as piano interpretation as facts?
UA-cam comments are good for sharing opinions, but most of the time noone really cares for your opinion, like in this case.
Keep your mind open if you want to succeed as an artist my friend.

I think two things are important: the artist's interpretation and the technical quality of the recording. I can't find the pleasure of listening to my beloved music if the recording is crackling and without “space”. I can't believe there aren't many people who think alike.
Two areas have to be distinguished - recordings recommended for pleasure and recordings of particular artistic value, but only for the purposes of musicology.
It is difficult to encourage young people to listen to classical music if archaic recordings are recommended. Of course, I am talking not about an artistic vision, but about a recording technique.
It's good that there are modern recordings for young listeners, because classical music would have a difficult future. It helps in a difficult situation. I hope that the Honorable Editors will notice this circumstance.

Don't understand me wrong ... so many different level's of 'understanding and enjoyment' of the musical testamonies from the composers mind and emotions. Best if the composer is involved in the production of his work but otherwise than that it becomes imprecise from the true message. Nevertheless ... knowledge of the composer's character and special notes to the scores are essential for reproducing and understanding his music ... but how much do we 'really' know 'FOR SURE' ? Hard to say. People become pretentious easily (including myself ofcourse !) .
