The Right TMCC Pattern and Facial Asymmetries

  • This video explores the implications of facial asymmetries on movement of the spine.
Obvious facial asymmetries include relationships between four primary bones: the sphenoid, the temporal bones, and the occiput. Any distortion or asymmetric movement of these bones can cause our head and neck/spine to move improperly.
The implications of improper spinal movement aren't hard to understand: impaired movement and pain. But it isn't obvious to most medical professionals that asymmetric facial features can be causing the problems or keeping the problems from resolving.
To see my prior facial asymmetries, check out this post:

I’ve been in pain every single day since a car accident in 1996. Every day. My neck, face, and the right side of my head were badly injured...53 stitches in my face, double nasal fracture, concussion, reverse cervical curve. I used to hide the right side of my face with my hair. But raising my arms and caring for hair has become difficult and I’ve had to cut it all off. My past doctors and current upper cervical chiro do not acknowledge my facial asymmetry, but after 1.5 years of weekly upper cervical adjustments I notice my face is changing and balancing out. But my atlas keeps slipping and needs a double adjustment almost weekly for several months. C1 is the main culprit now, along with c5 issues and diaphragm/rib pain. I have arthritis in my jaw and an eroded left jaw joint. I swing between cautious optimism/hope and total exhaustion with this healing process. I have a lot of bad pain days. The retracing process is exhausting. After my last atlas adjustment a couple days ago, I woke up in terrible pain thinking “I’m so tired of being like this” and found myself wishing for an end. This darkness is too familiar. My quality of life continues to decline and I’m no longer independent. I’m fortunate to have a loving companion who helps me with groceries and cleaning, even with getting dressed sometimes...Without this help I would be lost. I no longer make long term goals. When I think of the future I feel dread. I’ve wanted to give up so many times over the years...But part of me believes my pain is a gift, a teacher, and I can’t give up. This video makes me think I’m missing some puzzle pieces. My resources are extremely limited. I’m unable to travel from California to meet you. I would really appreciate the opportunity to have a conversation with you. Would you be willing to help me from a distance? It’s not my style to share so much in a public comment but....desperate times, desperate measures...thank you for this video.

Ever since I found about this. I started strengthening my weaker and I can almost feel my jaw more aligned. I has been weird for as long as I can remember. I'm only 20 and my left side has always been weaker and I just thought this is how it supposed to be. I started using my stronger side more and more. Now my left leg is a lot weaker that I almost have a limp. I am everything thing I can by performing single leg exercises. Let's hope it works because I don't wanna be walking with a limp in my 20s.😢

Right shoulder is more down and rotated forward. Also.my collarbone is popping out on the right side and it seems to be lower than the left.Until now I had two Sessions and I'm seeing improvements. However, what you're talking about in this video I never heard before. Actually my right eye is smaller and my right ear more flared out. My chin is stucked pointing to the right also. As you resolved your issues, Are there any things you could recommend me? Im trying to fix all this shit out for years now and I just want my body to function as it should. Hi Neal,
Thank you for sharing! I’ve watched a and learned a ton from your channel. This explains so many of my problems. I had a cross bite as a kid. I had an orthodontist fix my teeth as a teen (when I started to get osgood schlatters on my right knee, then on my right foot I have a hammer toe next to my big toe). I played D1 college tennis and always had knee tendonitis and plantar fasciitis. I grind my teeth at night (I wear a mouth guard), and my face is puffier on the left (mostly eye). I have been doing the 90 90 and the bent over drills you have shown. Do you have any other recommendations knowing my issues?

    • @NealHallinan

Hi Emily, without working directly with you I can't really offer any recommendations. Judging from your history though it wouldn't be surprising to me if your neck is still involved. I'd try and find a PRI certified PT and get an assessment. I don't think the exercises I have demonstrated will be enough for you. They could possibly help, but they are limited in their effectiveness for more complicated situations.

Hey Neal, I've been experiencing decreased function and pain in my right side literally from head to toe for about 2 years now. The past 6 months have been absolutely brutal unfortunately. Sleeping maybe 6 hours on lucky nights but mostly 3 or 4. All of September it was a hour a night if that. After two days of researching this condition and making subtle changes I'm already feeling immediate relief and changes to body mechanics in just normal movements so thank you alot for these videos. Past pictures to now have show a change in facial symmetry and posture. Prior to those two years I had absolutely no physical pain, no facial asymmetry, good posture and was in incredible physical shape. I would do martial arts, body weight exercises religiously and power lift alot. I was always a little stronger on my right side but not by a considerable amount. I was wondering if a emotionally traumatic event could have been the root cause of all this disfunction. I also suffered a high speed head on collision about a year and a half ago but walked out unscathed and I honestly believe that it's not the cause being that symptoms started before it. Sorry for the long comment just trying to piece together what could've caused all this

A collision like you describe could easily cause your neck muscles to tighten into a "protective" posture and then start to pull on the temporal bones of your cranium.

Thanks for the comment. If you do keep hurting your back (I had horrible SI joint issues for a great portion of my life) I highly recommend finding a Postural Restoration trained therapist.
From my experience, lots of really strong people hurt their backs a lot, and think they have something really complicated going on, but it can often be the case of a lower back being "stuck" in a position it can't get out of (excessive curve in the lower back, or "extended" posture). Sometimes it's really simple...sometimes it's not.

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  5 років тому +5

Isamar, a higher right eye and fuller left side of the face is normal. It's often the result of having overactive right neck muscles that influence the position of the jaw and the position of the temporal bone ("side-of-the-head/face bone" that forms the "T" in the TMJ joint).
So while it may not be what we desire aesthetically, it is considered "normal" from a PRI perspective. At any rate, most people don't even notice what we notice on ourselves.
My asymmetry wasn't normal (I had a left sided cranial pattern on top of a right sided body pattern).
In respect to correcting the right TMCC....it's tough if you aren't working with a PRI provider. It took me years to put this all together. We have tests that determine the position of your neck and then exercises that correct the position.
The human cranium has small amounts of movement available to it at its numerous sutures, and it can "settle" into asymmetric positions which probably don't cause any problems with the neck. I think it's a matter of degree.
At any rate, no human is perfectly symmetrical. In fact perfect asymmetry looks odd (you can find pictures on the internet of what a face would look like if it were perfectly symmetrical. Quite weird looking).
I would only be concerned if you had bodily pain.

Thanks a Million for your info, I just had an Atlas adjustment that cause my spine to twist . I think It was a 20 year old injury .
Now 4 months after my atlas adjustment, my body made a huge shift so my head moved or turned about 1CM to the left pulling or stretching the Sphenoid and Occiput muscles . Your video just explained why my eye feels a bit off and maybe why my tinnitus sound became louder.
The Doctor said I will go through 2 more major shifts within the next 4 months or so and that should balance back everything... I Hope....

@@NealHallinan Thanks a lot for your reply.
I really thought that you had your atlas realigned because of the video ( Tinnitus and the Vagus nerve) and you spoke about the Atlas position .
My doctor only shifted back my Atlas to the centre position nothing else, my head straitened and my Tinnitus almost disappeared. 4 months later my entire spine started to move by itself shifting/untwisting causing my symptoms to worsen . The doctor said it is normal because the weight and new position of my head will cause my entire spine to untwist and shift and within the next 4 month my spine should be aligned with my new head position then my symptoms will start to go away.
I watched many of your videos about PR and they are fascinating and very informative and I thank you for sharing this great info.

My right hip is higher than my left, my left shoulder is higher than my right, and the back of my head is tilting to the left, bulging. I have a very asymmetrical nose and jaw that both slant left as well as my left ear being way more prominent than my right. My asymmetries have gotten worse over time and I feel like I need surgery to fix my face. Also,The left side of my face is almost half an inch more concaved than my right side of face. I really don’t know what to do in order to make my face look more symmetrical. And I know perfect asymmetry is not normal, but my face has some very profound asymmetries. Seeing your cranium models reminds me of the left side-bend and right-torsion issues but I am wondering how these states actually arise in the first place.
My guess, after much thought - rightly or wrongly, is the following:
we prefer right stance so pelvis is oriented right which sidebends the lumbar spine to the right. Because of the right sidebend of the lumbar spine the cervical spine will also want/need? to orient right. When the cervical spine bends right the eyes need to be fixed on a horizontal gaze (as the gaze is not horizontal due to the bending of the cervical spine to the right). Therefore we end up bending the neck back to the left viz-a-viz the left side-bend. When we bend the neck to the left the body "infers" that we should be in left-stance so we end up rotating the cranium (from the occiuput section of the of the skull)to the right.
You think this problem could all be avoided if we had initially rotated the cranium slightly to the left when in right stance to avoid the problem with visual system wanting to obtain a horizontal gaze?

But I believe you need the left lateral pterygoid to move the cranium back and to the left and the jaw needs to go back slightly so that the neck can get some extension and more lordosis as its in more of a flexed state.. You also need the right MEDIAL pterygoid and the right temporalis muscle, according to the link I posted. It's more important to feel these muscles and then do the necessary breathing.

It's possible. But you really need a professional who knows what they are doing. Facial asymmetry is normal, though.

I have created a new approach about this and to prove I have full x rays, its a lot easier to fix than it appears, if its mainly neurological it can be solved in few days ot even in a day

I’m stuck with exactly this due to malocclusion with than caused subluxation i c1/c2 occipiut area , now I’m having neck pain/ eye issues all life side the same side as the subluxation.
I got a customized splint from a tmj specialist and it’s supposed to keep my teeth in nearly perfect occlusion & it gets adjusted
But how do I reverse the pattern my body currently fell into?

I don’t believe ancient man had these issues. If you see primitive peoples even today, their teeth and jaw are perfectly developed and symmetrical.
I have a hunch that this degeneration began when we started to cut the umbilical cord connected to a 5lbs placenta (50-100% of healthy body weight) full of stem cells meant to complete our post-natal development.
