Wuthering Waves Genshin Impact Honkai Star Rail Hoyo drama
What do you think about the drama?
Is it blown out of porportion or are players justified for wanting representation?
I think that if the culture is good enough to appropriate from, then they should respect the color and traits of the people there. If the people are "too ugly" to be in their game (in Hoyo / Genshin's opinion), then don't take their culture and deities and put it in the game.
I believe that's fair to ask of any company - regardless of whether it's based in a European country or not.
The world was on Egypt's side (including me, a black person) when Netflix Cleopatra was misrepresenting and color-washing Egyptians.
This is the same situation again.
It doesn't matter who the perpetrator is, the logic still stands. This is very wrong and insulting behavior from Hoyoverse.
Personally I don't value representation, Raiden in a mariachi costume is cool to me. I think it's kind of blown out of proportion, but people can get upset about whatever they want I guess lol. All I got out of this was that I think the shark girl is cute.
I'm a whlte guy and I think it's hilarious Mihoyo constantly shows representation of us in their games. It's to the point where it would be weird to see a bIack character. Even their supposed Asian characters (Inazuma and Liyue) look white. Thanks I guess?
I think it would make the game much more interesting if they had more diverse characters, at this point the design gets stale.
And it’s really not a lot of effort to just give a character a darker skin tone
I'm just curious why there's only 2 Pyro characters shown for the Pyro nation and why it looks more like Australia
I cant wait for hoyo to do nothing about it and the players to pull on the characters anyway
Yeah but like there is always a chance and I don't think it's worthless to try.

I regularly see dark skin in anime and gacha games, and I mean chocolate not just a slight tan. But then again, the products in mind come from South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan, not China.
Then there's Cleopatra from HI3...
To be fair, that most likely doesn't come from wanting to fairly represent the world's population or cultures but just because basically every character in Nikke is designed to hit different fetishes and tastes and that definitely includes darker skin tones, too.
@SjiaoHushame they only care about money rather then actually representing others.

My biggest issue with Natlan designs is how modern they all look. Isn't Genshin Impact a fantasy world? Fontaine having so much more technology than the rest of the world already kind of didn't make sense from a world-building perspective. Lore and worldbuilding are often touted as things that Genshin does well, but the world is looking increasingly like a muddled mess. Natlan genuinely doesn't even look like it's the same game.
The more you progress through nation the more it becomes have their own modernity. Sumeru was the one who had the most advance society currently in the game Fontaine wasn't even that advance. It's already hinted that natlan people goes more in latest trends than past tribal clothing. They still wear ornaments but their general art direction is more street style vibes.
Teyvat has its own rule, don't you remember lmao ???
That's kinda invalid when you remember that Khanria(spelled wrong) had advance technology and it might be the same for Celestia.
In sumeru scholars look like they can crack game codes while eremites look like they ve just discover wheel. Just like how Monstadt,Liyue,Inazuma seems like thousands of years behind compare to other nations.I believe
Hoyo just mishmash everything (magic, fantasy steampunk,..etc) without any of the nation in specific era
Fontaine's technology somewhat make sense especially when Snezhnaya and Khaenri'ah's technology are just as advanced if not better.

As a black woman I'm the last person to push for diversity when it isn't needed into every part of the entertainment industry but the Hoyoverse situation is just ridiculous and actually upsetting. For me it's more of a case that hoyoverse is robbing everything from a culture that they find "valuable" for profit, yet hide the aspects that they find unfit for their tastes. Having somewhat the whole playable cast be mind you paper white not even tan or anything in a region that Hoyoverse themselves chose is based on Pre-colonized latin American and west Africa I really don't know where they thought that was a decent thing to do? regardless of who you are or what you think it's just unexcusable

Probably bit unrelated but why are all dark skinned characters are mid at best? Like the strongest dark skinned character we have is Cyno and he is barely a Kequing side-grade. Meanwhile charterers like Alhathem hits like a Truck.
Racism.
They barely pander to the bare minimum and scrape the surface and then say enough pandering and leave it at that, same.... Couldn't even make sigewinne a melusine and turned her human and made some bs crap story, sounded so pathetic.
Im sorry but it is racism there is no other explanation that makes sense
Colorism it's been in there in all hyv games even hsr people who bandwagon on the natlan hate trend don't even realize that hsr still has colorism and no diverysity. The only dark skin character rn is arlan then they celebryated having another POC character which makes them 2 these people were easy to please just add 1 dark skin character throughout a year and they'll call it a win over genshin
It’s because Alhaitham is dendro, dendro is automatically OP. The expectations for non-dendro units are higher because they don’t make dendro reactions :/
It’s not racism, it’s colorism. Two different but related things. Colorism is massive in Asia, and not always connected to race or ethnicity. Just a classic poor vs. rich thing of darker skinned people being poor and working outside. This then was translated to viewing people with naturally darker skin as lesser as well. The skin bleaching industry in Asia is enormous, and to expect regular darker skin characters from any Asian country’s art is just asking for disappointment.
I really don't care what skin color a character in game has.

@@leeroy2752 Then why are people complaining about Olorun’s skin color when the Yoruba sees him as a formless deity who is representative of anything and everything? Gacha gamers with nothing else to do is accusing Hoyo of being disrespectful while they’re reducing a spiritual deity down to nothing but his perceived skin color. If anything, Hoyo artists rendered him in their own interpretation, which is more accurate as a formless spiritual deity is supposed to appear to the perceiver how the perceiver interprets him. Historically, some interpreted him as having dark skin appearance, but there are others who interpreted him as a ghostly figure also. But for the pursuit of pushing certain world views, the gacha community is essentially saying that he has to be black and that there should be no other interpretations. Which is more disrespectful?
@NutellaCrepe I'm literally Nigerian. And to be frank, he is seen as a spiritual form. A spiritual mass which has no likeness to a human indeed. However, if he was to be portrayed he would be in the likeness of Nigerians. I think it is like how people refaced Jesus to to in the likeness of a White person even though he wasn't.
@NutellaCrepe And for your question it is most definetly more disrespectful of hoyo to interpret him in such a way physically, however, I am not surprised with China's efforts to hide anything precieved as too dark as seen in the Force awakens poster and Black Panther posters. While I don't think they should change his skin color like many if the tik tok art which misses the other aspects of culture and just blackwashes the art, I do view it as disrespectful that beautiful skin like mine is relegated to Hirichrils and random enemy mobs. I have a question for you all though. Answer in this order: Why is your skin darker? Where is it on teyvat and why does that make it darker? Do you know what's the difference between our sun and other stars of the same size? Do you know that teyvat's sky is fake? Considering all of this, why would Teyvat's characters have the same visible characteristics as us?
Spoiler for the answers: Because you're closer/on the equator. There is likely no equator in Teyvat especially considering that Natlan is left to Sumeru and to Fontaine, also the equator makes human's skin darker because there's an evolutionary need for more melanin, in order to avoid sunburns where the sunrays hit the earth harder. Our sun has an absurdly heavier mass compared to any other star of the same size, so it produces more energy. Yes, teyvat's sky is fake and the same is probably true for the sun and the moon, therefore the light they shine on the planet. Considering all of this, it's easier to see why, even though they share the culture, their appearance shouldn't necessarily (and it's even more logic that it doesn't) be the same as ours, including the skin colour.
funniest part is that most of complains about skintone come from people who are not from the places Natlan is based off.

People talking about "open-mindedness, tolerance, being inclusive" while also saying "some people in another country are evil because they don't think like I do".
It's not about politics, it's the fact that the current skin tone is not thematically coherent to Natlan given it's inspiration and their words abt accurately representing it. The dark skin would've added to the vibe.

And then some professor in a Californian uni wrote a 200 page about yosuke where he misrepresented Japanese history. Also there's hiphop music in yosukes in game battle music. And they end up mixing of multiple periods of japans history in the game. It was overall a disappointment when compared to the previous Assassin's creed games in terms of representation.

Honestly if it's new characters in any IP, I don't care. The retconning is what is the most appalling, like how they made Dumbledore retroactively gay.
With Race swapping, the issue is different because a lot of is made under the guise of existing IPs especially to spite on the white audeince and replace white male characters that had positive roles with darker characters. Genshin is still problematic for this, but I would say that at least it is a new IP with the blending of cultures in different regions. So at least they have plausible deniability.

Race-swapping applies to already pre-existing characters, if a new character is black, white, red, purple who tf cares. These games characters are originals with inspiration from real life, you can’t race-swap something that didn’t exist before. For all I care someone could make a nation inspired from Russia and make all its inhabitants black.

Latino here, I'm also a little disappointed, because it looks like a tournament thing rather than a war. Aside from that, I couldn't care less about the matter, as it is really stupid to begin with.
Also the Pyro Archon looks sick af. So cool.
i would say i am confused to... what happened to the "nation of war"... it feel more like the hunger games...
@@lagrangewei It gave me more of a "Pokemon" vibe tbh, but I see where you're getting at.
@@lagrangewei war can mean many things. most likely the "war" is a tournament of sorts to avoid people dying. Also, i cannot find a single thing about natlan being directly called the nation of war. Just that the archon is the god of war. Seems like people made their own expectation because the archon is the god of war which isnt smart. But i did find this, "their souls are forged for battle from birth", that they love street graffiti, showing off and comparing fashionable trinkets. He also states it's a "contradictory, charming and colorful" place. So its colorful and charming. From an npc in sumeru. There is also another npc who vacationed there and didnt want to leave.
Not to be rude but I'm actually glad i stopped playing genshin or any hoyo games. Why? Gambling is not always my very much luck and it's also destroying my eyes from the screen. Once you get addicted to a gacha game, you won't stop thinking about it and forcefully go back to grind, grind, and grind and gamble your money on an anime character.
My every genshin friends said to not join the community due to the toxicity and thirst of pulling characters into rage. All communities are like this so i avoid just the bad side, ignoring people who are being toxic. This made my fun down and my health down due to the one purpose (pulling or characters). It's not good for younger audience or players to go do gambling games as gacha games does to anyone, especially hoyo. Every game has money to pay and are friendly free to play, but this is me, i do not want to get my mind in gacha games, i just play games that has calming and fun things in a while.
We all like different things, we hate different things, we argue on things due to the two. What I prefer to do is to play the game as a F2P person. I don't spend on money on games that will not be helpful in your real life needs like medicines, food, bills, pets, and even the support to your loved once. You do you and i do mine. No one has the perfect 100% likings and dislikings.
What we should be sad is that this companies are sometimes greedy and quiet to their people, looking down at them as moneybags. That's what humans are, all of us. We all have lust and greed and envy.
I knew this would happen. It's ridiculous the lack of colour diversity for the regions which the population that genshin based it of is just white which totally ignores skin is just tooo much.
It's always interesting to see people fighting over pixels lol 😂
I mean it’s bad, but im not wasting my mental energy getting so worked up and blowing the situation out of proportion. I like to take it easy you know?
Natlan is more about the Ring of Fire region than South America. Calling it solely based on SA is basically ignorance.
True tbh. I think before speaking on a topic, you should do some research.
How come they don’t listen about this but when that one guy complained about the swimsuit skins they discontinued it
because that guy reported mihoyo to the chinese government
@@mitchellekesimolotse5450 that’s what they always do. They did it with the nuvallet situation
"only in america" problem, lmao
They are picking and choosing what they considered colored as well. They literally turned it from there aren't enough black characters to the characters aren't black enough. Seems to be a cultural problem they should just not cater to tbh.
These are people who don't consider you part of their group if you aren't black enough for them. I found the true racists in this argument.
@@YuyuHakurei i don’t care
The content creators like tuanto who voiced their disappointment are just doing damage control. They're making a statement so they dont get backlash. Sadly, i dont think they actually care all that much. If they did, they'd stop playing and spending on the game.
Okay, never thought I liked Envi more lol
