How to Set Up a Smart Home Device on a 2.4 GHz Network

- Setting up a smart home device can be either really easy or really frustrating. And if you have a device that requires a 2.4 GHz-band connection, you may have run into a problem, especially if your router automatically defaults to a 5 GHz. If that's the case, there's a quick workaround for getting your devices to connect on the 2.4 GHz band, you just ... position the device correctly! All you need is, literally, to stand in the right place. It might take an extension cord, but once you know the trick, connecting your smart home devices will be a cinch.

I cannot tell you how greatful I am to have found your video, it kept me from going completely insane. I swollowed my pride and went and sat in my driveway to set up a pet feeder while fielding questions from my curious neighbors. It worked and that is all that matters to me at this point. The fact that I had to resort to that in 2023 blows my mind, why are they still running shit on 2.4ghz if we can't even select it!
That's hilarious
You should listen to the first 15 seconds of the video, the 2.4 Ghz has a longer and stronger signal strength. A 5 Ghz chip is high in speed but with shorter signal coverage.
Simply the best way to get the 2.4ghz , I was about to return my smart light bulbs. Thank you 🙏
Fun fact: I DID rage-return a few bulbs the first time around. Then the light went on (so to speak) in my head, and I re-bought them to try this trick.
I have a smart home would over 45 wireless 2.4 G devices and it seems that I only can connect so many devices on my 2.4 G network do you have a solution to this, how can I increase the number of devices that utilizes 2.4 G.
@@donouellette14 I always thought a duel band router would allow you to connect your devices to either band or both independent of each device at the same time?
@@ReviewsOrg My Phillips light bulbs work via WiFi and Alexa.. does that mean I’m on 2.4ghz WiFi?
@@ReviewsOrg kQ
🤣 I had to do the same thing with my robot vacuum. I was in the driveway and my neighbor asked what was I doing, I said setting up my robot vacuum 😡. It's 2020, why are devices still only 2.4 GHz.
Hi what robot vacuum do you have if you don’t mind me asking
@@MariaLopez-zw2bs I have an Ecovac Deebot 901
They are lower frequencies for range
...because it's 2020...would you expect anything different this year? Lol
Lolol the emoji was perfect.” 😡”
Whoever said turn on the microwave SAVED ME! THANKS BIGBRAIN MOVE RIGHT THERE! WORKED!!
I put a glass of water in microwave, turned it on for a minute, search for network again, and it found it in less than 10seconds 🤯👍
Absolutely brilliant after 4hours trying to sort our Christmas lights we were about to pack them up and send them back because thought the plugs were faulty 🙈, thanks a million very happy now sorted the problem in 2minutes thanks to you
One way to do this without walking outside with your lamp, is to stop your home Wi-Fi router. Set your phone as a hot spot with the same name and pswd of your home Wi-Fi. Connect the device to your phone hot spot (it is 2,4 Gz) with the app. Then stop your hotspot, turn on your home Wi-Fi network and it should work.
Thank you your comment has helped me
You sir are a genius
Thank you so much for this idea. As going away from the wifi did not help me. But this did.
My iPhone doesn’t seem to allow you to change the name of the hotspot. Did you do it on an android?
Thanks!!! It worked
Thanks, Craig, you are a genius! I spent 2 days trying to set up a security camera until I came upon your video, again thanks!
Although the video didn't fully solve my problem in itself, it did get me going along the right track. I was trying to set up a hot water smart-switch which was fixed, as was my WiFi router - so it was not really possible to move either to force a 2.4GHz connection. After seeing the video and realising I needed to weaken the signal in order to force the devices to connect i simple wrapped a double layer of aluminium foil around the switch, which had the effect of reducing the signal strength sufficiently. Thank you for your help - I doubt I would have solved the problem without it.
In my case, the security cam that comes on the flood light was already mounted and connected to power within the 5 GHz zone or bubble so I could not move it further from the router. Alternatively, I bundled the router up in a thick blanket and put it inside a cabinet, and that simply did the job to get the bandwidth reduced to 2.4 GHz where the camera is mounted :) but be careful not to leave the router in the blanket for a long period as it heats up really quick! As a precaution, after the job is done I had to put a small fan in front of the router to cool it off lol
Brilliant solution!
After reading this you inspired me to use a large kettle as a sort of makeshift Farady cage. At first it worked too well, but by mucking about with propping various sides up, I got it to destroy the 5 band and allow the 2.4 band to limp the rest of the way, to the far side of the house, where I was able to place the bulb -- that had lost its configuration due to a "brown-out" on/off/on/off sputter -- back on the network in all its generic smart-device glory.
I have this same problem with a hard wired camera and wrapping the router up in a blanket didn’t work. Still have a non-functioning security camera because it won’t connect.
Thanks so much. I was trying to set up my daughters colour changing light all night and your tip on moving away from wi fi box worked. You are a lifesaver
Thank you! I only needed the first two minutes of your video...which was clear and precise and on the mark. My next step was "gifting" the plugs to my brother if I couldn't get them to work. But, your fix of just moving to a remote location in my house did the trick.
I admire your persistence in setting up 10 (TEN!) bulbs this way. I use technology for convenience. This isn't convenient for me. It's bad enough having to do it once, but if I have a rolling black out or something I'll have to repeat the procedure. I now appreciate how wonderful it is to simply flip a switch and have something work.
No If u face electricity issue thr is no problm... It will not reset... It will reset whn u on off 3 times continuosly..... No worries.. Its a one time thing
My problem is hooking up my security cameras mounted permanently up high on the walls and ceilings around the house. I have new upgraded spectrum wifi6 with auto switching. The technician actually asked me to do the same thing which is just not possible to do. Maybe he watched this video. Programming smart switches and plugs that require your phone to be on 2.4 ghz is another issue. Your phone automatically defaulted back to 5ghz if your plugs have to be close to the router while doing programming.
Thanks ima go to the other side of my house in my old room at 12 am and do this 4 times
I am so happy that I found this video! I've had so many problems connecting to 2.4GHz. I applied your solution earlier today and it worked exactly as you said it would! Thank you so much!
Guess my roommate is about to lose wifi in the middle of his zoom class so I can use my lightbulbs
Edit: Hes mad
LOL
Lmao

When you say he lost wifi, did you turn the wifi off? I can't seem to get mine working even with this trick 😭
You saved me! I walked across the street with a 100 foot extension, set up my sockets that only work on 2.4ghz and boom, they connected! Thank you so much, my 7 year old grandson is very happy to have Alexa turn on and off his bedroom light as he's scared to walk into a dark room. Yayy, you are awesome!
Builds his confidence if he practices going to into dark he won't be afraid of it in the future.
I've been searching for a fix for hours, and you solved it in seconds!!
Thank you so much :)
Mate get the point and tell us how
I’ve been searching around and breaking my head but you had a great idea! Thanks so much
You're awesome! I've been struggling with this issue for weeks. Bought more thinking I got a bad unit. But you just saved me! Thanks!
THANK YOU!!!! Walking away from the router worked for my RING Camera. I tried everything without success to the point that I was going to throw away my cameras. But Thanks to you, I GOT THEM ALL WORKING!!! You're AWESOME!!!
Thank you , would have never thought I had to link my smart lights from my yard lol! SUNCO needs to address this
Just used this remedy to solve my 2.4 GHz problem. I didn't have to go out of the house, I found a weak Wifi spot in my house, plugged in the lamp containing the feit smart bulb there. Then I started the feit app and followed the instructions. I signed onto my usual Wifi band that support 5 GHz and since I was in a weak signal area, it allowed me to connect as 2.4 GHz. Thanks for posting! 10/06/2021.
OMG brilliant! Thank you from this ole lady long lost in wifi land! Bless your soul for the help!
I spend quite a few minutes searching for you, and I am glad I did my security camera it was not connecting until I followed your step away option from the router! Brilliant 👏🏼😊
OMG Thank you for putting this video out! I just about was ready to give up on my bulbs before catching this video. This absolutely worked for me, went into the basement in a corner furthest away from my router and just like that, it connected easily. Thank you again!
Like everyone else, I couldn't figure out how to do it either. You have saved many people further frustration - THANK YOU!!
Wow. We were having the same exact problem, so my husband decided to leave it up to me to figure it out, thank you SO MUCH for this video. I will now go home and try it and will give an updated comment at another time. Thank you.
Thanks for doing this video. Thanks to you I was able to connect up a smart dimmer switch that required a 2.4 GHz signal. My router kept defaulting to 5.0 GHz, followed your instructions and got my wifi network to come up with 2.4 GHz.
thanks again
This video was extremely helpful! I was trying to set up my Merkury wifi smart light bulbs and was getting so incredibly frustrated. Your little trick worked like a charm and my lights are set up and work perfectly! You're a real one for this sir, consider me subscribed and a new fan.
I have several 2.4 ghz smart plugs. I cannot, for physical reasons, do as you suggest. Aren't there any 5ghz smart plugs out there that can be set up to connect to my gateway 5ghz router? My apartment is small. I am not techy even if I figured out what the problem was. I just want a better solution than setting everything up outside due to my physical limitations. Thanx.
Genius. I was ready to throw this light strip in the garbage. Thanks for saving me the money and the aggrevation. This worked like a charm.
Thank you so much for this. Have spent hours trying to set up smart plugs since we moved and switched to Optimum's "Smart" wifi which doesn't let you choose, and even after Optimum customer service tried to separate our wifi into two SSIDs, they were both still using 5ghz frequency and I could not connect. But, holding my cellphone all the way at the opposite end of the apartment from the router worked and I was able to get the smart plugs set up on 2.4ghz. When I moved them back to their normal outlets they still worked. Thank you for this advice!
Thank you! I finally set my smart lights up thanks to your video!
This is the FIX/Workaround when setting up Toucan/Arlo security cameras, doorbells.. We just wanted you to know, how much your appreciated...
Absolutely fantastic, been trying for ages to connect my Wi-Fi plugs with no luck!!! I stumbled across your video and tried your suggestion and now Alexa is controlling my home!!!!! Many for the information, it's greatly appreciated. Take care 👍
Thanks so much for this tip, I spent an hour and a half on the phone with eero support who was worthless. For my router that I couldn’t move that was near my ring wired doorbell I just placed a heavy blanket over it to reduce the signal.
Thanks brother! I had to return some smart plugs and then I had the same problem with the new ones. I followed your instructions and it was super easy to made them work
You sir are a genius! I lost nearly 5 hours of my life trying to set up my 5 year old’s Toniebox. Had a eureka moment just as I was about to throw it out the window. Yours was the first video I watched and it fixed everything. Thank you 👍
Out the window is were it needed to be to work
Thank you! Spent way too much time faffing with these blasted plugs and your advice worked!
This worked on the plugs? I thought the plugs had to be in place, can you elaborate more on how u got the u
Plugs hooked up? Outside then bring them back in🤔 Thanks!
Wonderful!!! I was about to discard the plugs I was flustered trying to set them up. Thank you!!!
Thank you! Worked great for my Coredy r580…I went down one level in my building and it worked!
So grateful to you for sharing this technically simple solution! It worked for my 5G doorbell that only wanted to use 2.4gh WiFi. Out in my back garden for the set up worked a treat 😊
i have never commented anywhere, but had to tell you.... this is the best hack ever...too simple and good. kudos to you man
My home WiFi is an Orbi with 2 satellites. I unplugged the closest satellite, and viola, 2.4GHz. Set up the strip light, plugged the satellite back in, and I'm all set. Great trick! Thanks so much.
This is absolutely genius. I just purchased a 2.4ghz device and was literally cursing at the box it came in because I thought I would have to go through modifying my existing 5ghz connection. But like the man said just walk away.....I went into my garage, followed same set up process and it connected no problem this time. Thanks man, u just saved me a lot of headache.
Yeah, I bought outlet plugs bc I didn't know about light bulbs. The Geek Squad Tech didn't know how to set up the outlet plugs. I swore like a sailor in frustration for 90 mins myself.
Omg thank you so much. I’ve been having these led lights for about 2-3 months and I’ve just now gotten them to work
Thanks to this video I was able to connect my smart lights. Thanks
I have an old Netgear 2.4 GHz wifi extender that I plugged in and connected all my lights to that. My ring doorbell was having distance connection issues with the 5 GHz, so connected it to the extender as well. Everything is working perfectly.
OMG THANK YOU!!!! I was going crazy trying to figure things out. Gonna try this when I get home today.
Thanks boss....I was trying to determine how to change the frequency for my WiFi to 2.4 Ghz, and I discovered I couldn't change it manually. I even bought a LAN adapter to connect to my laptop and still no luck. Then I came across your video, and man your a genius! However, the bulbs I was trying to set up are the small candelabra bulbs and and I didn't have anything portable to run it. Finally had to run to Home Depot and purchased a bulb and socket set. Luckily it was only like $6. Ran my cord out side and completed the set up for all 6 bulbs. I"m sure my neighbors were wondering what this idiot doing? Oh well, problem solved! Thanks for the tip!
Thanks so much dude. I would have never have figured that out. Went into the hallway of my apartment complex with my lamp and it actually worked lol.
Thank you soooooo much for this!!! I have been trying to connect my smart devices for so long now!!
Worked 100% setting up my “Smart” outlet 👍. Is it me or are we moving backwards with ease of use with technology 🧐🙄. Thanks for the trick 🤙
Simpler way I found if you have a google router or any other mesh system, just set up a guest WiFi, connect your phone to that, and then connect whatever device you want to use to the guest WiFi and after it’s connected just switch your phone WiFi back to the main WiFi network. I found that to be way easier since I couldn’t move my strip lights out to the driveway
So are you implying that the "guest network" is only 2.4gh? Thanks.
Tim datoolman yes
You saved me £40 i changed networks they didn't work then saw your video. All working now Thx 👌
Thanks for the tip, it's really helpful. And I suggest to buy a 2.4Ghz(no 5Ghz funtion) router for "set up only" for those who are not able to move device far away. I installed a Smart Door Lock!!!! I think it's good for long term use because we are in the world of setting up plenty Smart Home Device.
Amazing advice, even years after your video, it still works! Thank you & Merry Christmas!
Thank you thank you thank you i was so mad i couldn’t get it then my son went outside and bam it worked ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Was given a Deskjet 3700 series printer and had to take it , and my laptop ( I don't have a smart phone to the bottom of my garden ). My wife thought I was mad, but it worked. Thankyou.
Thank you so much! Even in 2023 your video is quite useful. Thank you.
Camera set up with in 2min after watching this video. Thank you keep up the good work
You eased my frustration with my damn modem defaulting to 2.4ghz. THANK YOU.....RGB lights here I come!
Worked like a charm for a fragrance diffuser I ordered from Alibaba. Thank you!
Dude your awesome I almost broke this expensive device 4 hours trying to figure it out just went outside like you said and it started working excellent 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
THANK YOU THANK YOU!! Initially was able to set up pet feeder but unplugged to change batteries and then couldn't get connected back to WIFI. Took to work and was able to connect so knew it was my setup. Took it to the backyard and YAY! was able to connect.
This actually worked immediately for my smart plug but not my panoramic camera. Thanks for the info.
Did you take the smart plug outside along with the smart device you want to sync it with?
Thank you men!! This issue really got under my skin.
Thanks dude, you're a life saver
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I was ready to throw them out!! LOL Brilliant!!
Smart home is the new convenient way to use tech enabled lifestyle at home.
liked this vid!
simple yet BEST solution for this problem. Thanks a ton.
Okay, can I say that you are a saint? My internet service provider only offers a router that displays one SSID name (supposed to be really smart ... until you need to access the 2.4 GHz band which exists but you can't see it) and, catch this, won't allow you to access the router to separate out the two SSIDs even though that capability is clearly there by the manufacturer's documentation. Duh! But, your suggestions work like a charm. I did the "driveway at a distance" suggestion and realized that both the phone used to program the bulb AND the bulb need to be far enough away to ensure 2.4 GHz access only. But, finding an old cell phone that only accesses 2.4 GHz is brilliant. No more driveway diving. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I live in a tiny apartment how am I supposed to get far enough away 🤦🏼♀️
Extension cord into the hallway? You just have to connect once and can then plug in closer.
Walk out of the house close ur door and start walking far from the house while cheking the signal strength.. it's pretty simple... I too had similar doubts...
@@killthetime514 how to I check the strength
Hi I might be late but use your phone hotspot and get a 2nd android device. Connect to your phone hotspot with the 2nd device, most hotspots are always 2.4hz so use the 2nd device as a remote from the hotspot!
Lmaooo same....
OMG 😲 MANY THANKS 😊 🙏 💕 Been at trying to set up a irobot mop for hours 😅
THANK YOU SOO MUCH! The best and easiest way.
Hi, thank you for sharing great tips like this. It's help me to set up my IR remote
So funny how this works so well 😂. Walked into my driveway with a lamp and and my mom was watching me thinking it wasn’t going to work. But it actually did worked to my surprise.
Great advce! Worked straight away after a frustrating hour getting nowhere!
Thank you! I have a Deco XE75 mesh and was able to use the GUEST network, change it to 2G only with the same password as my 5G/2G Deco network and my smart device now uses the DECO-2G all the time. Before realizing I could use the GUEST network, I made two networks 2G and 5G with the normal DECO network. It worked to setup the device, but my wife wanted to only have one DECO network, so we changed it back thinking the smart device would connect to the 2G by default. It didn't. So the that's where the GUEST network solution became possible. Whew!
This helped, and worked for me. Thank you.
After a week of just trying to update my new password, I took your advice and it worked immediately, THANK YOU!!!
Thanks, worked for me never thought of this 👍
Worked perfectly thanks!
Thanks so much I was getting frustrated with setting up my camera requires 2.4Ghz yet my WiFi is 5 , all I did was to move further away and it connected thanks so much🙏
After 1 hr and then watching your video I went on my deck and connecting my light all thx to your great advice
That is a fantastic suggestion, thank you. Unfortunately, I have a thermostat that works off a 24 volt source and would have to take the subbase off the wall and hook up a 24v source away from the house. If it comes to that I guess that's what I have to do...Video has some great information.
OMG thank you so much I was about to smash my lightbulb thank you for saving the day I will set this up tomorrow and try again
This worked! Lifesaver! Thank you.
If u were next to me right now, I’d have to kiss u.
I’d struggled for a solid few hours last night trying to pair and then trying to understand to 2.4 and 5ghz then trying to rename it and then stuffing up all my other devices linked to my wifi…..pulling my hair out until your video……
Absolutely legendary. Can’t Thanku enough. Definitely have a new subscriber xxxxx
Thank you almost gave up on setting up video door bell, all done thanks to you xx
For stuffs sake, I’ve already taped the led strip to my bed, can’t now move my bed into my driveway haha
Bro. Clutch! Just switched providers and thus all the things.
Instructions: Get close to router.
Solution: Why are you so close to the router!?
Went to the furthest corner of the house and connected immediately. You’re amazing. Thanks!
Use your old router. Turn off your new router and turn on your old router connected to the internet, to set up your smart device. Then as long as you did so on the same SSID and password, when you turn on your new router your device should connect fine. (this of course if you can't just turn off your 5 gigahertz band on your new router)
Thank you, I was really lucky as I could swap the wifi on my phone from our Mesh to the original router and it must have linked to the 2.4 as they finally linked.
Fantastic! It worked for the lamps and outlets. Didn't have to go outside the house, hust took everything to the basement and had those linked from the farthest corner where the 5ghz signal was weaker. The only thing I am stlill to reset is the Shark robot vacuum cleaner. I have to find out how to reset first. Thank you !
Hey great vid, do you know if switching 5ghz off then back on again after connecting device works with ring products, specifically the floodlight plus?
Thank you, you are now my hero, you actualy explained this so a numpty like me could understand and do.😂
I want to use my light bub for my closet light but what your saying is I temporarly connect it outside and then it would work in my closet?
lived in a small apartment and had to set it up in the kitchen while the microwave was on 😂😂
The easiest way I found was to use an old phone if you have one laying around. The older ones will only connect to 2.4GHz, which allows it to work perfectly. Good luck!
thank you C Cav, it worked right away. we've been trying to set up our smarthome and had trouble with the doorbell camera (hardwired) and our garage door opener. they just wouldn't connect to our cox panoramic. we had 3 different ADT techs go and none could get them to work, they said they were doing their part and our internet was our responsibility. so like you say, i used my iphone xs' hot spot with the same name and pw of our 2.4ghz on our cox panoramic, it took me less than 5 minutes to do both devices. thank you very much once again.
@@mobomobile That's great news! Glad it worked! Sometimes the old tech works like a charm and you shouldn't get rid of it.
If your phone won't connect to the 2.4 channel even if it is active, try to turn off cellular data, phones will sometimes just hop off the wifi if cell data is faster.
