Too bad there are no UA-cam videos, that I can find, of the scene where she is singing this in the film because the scenery, and her amazing yellow velvet dress, were really gorgeous!
Thank you Neil! I appreciate the credit. This was quite a challenging gig, to fit into anothet’s soul, especially with a Manchester British accent. I had a dialect coach to help me. Samantha was kind but very much wanted to do her own singing as so many of them do. Leslie Bricusse and Tony Newley were just wonderful to me. I was just 22 when this was done.
LYRICS: If I were a man, I'd scratch his eyes out. I'd tear his hair out by the roots And kick his shins in with my boots And I would bite his hand, as only I can If only I could BE A MAN! A great man would not hesitate To put Dr. Dolittle to death. Attila the Hun, to name only one Would chuckle at his dying breath! It seems a man can be as rude as he likes, Crude as he likes, lewd as he likes to. But a girl must be discreet as she can, Sweet as she can, neat as she can too. But that's not the life that I want to lead Normal and formal as homespun tweed. I need the freedom to go... where I please. But where do I please? I don't know... that's the trouble... I don't know... Here I stand at the crossroads of life Childhood behind me The future to come And alone Nothing planned at the crossroads of life But life will find me More grateful than some It has known Grateful to see all the wonderful things I see Grateful to be what life expects me to be So I stand at the crossroads of life This way or that way Well, which shall I go? Towards the left or the right? Towards the day or the night? Towards the dark or the light? Only my heart can know Only my heart... can know...
To confirm your point, in the beginning of the movie, it says "Puddleby-On-The-Marsh, 1845". Ergo, it is indeed set in a period where women are more limited in the ability to excercise their rights. The Doctor's limited knowledge of women is only because he doesn't understand them as much as he understands his main passion, animals, & personally I think it's healthier that he is devoted to them rather than obsessed with women. Other than that, it's all supposed to be in good fun.
I love how people are trying to mix politics into all of this and mold it into some sort of modern upheaval. This was a song about a girl with progressive thoughts and feelings in a time when she was raised that she could not step up and be like that without being branded a spinster or worse.
Thanks for supporting me in defense of this film. People really ought to consider history more before they jump to conclusions. "Don't judge a book by the cover!" :)
I don't think the movie is sexist, just because the Docter is, but he can't stand any humans except the 3 he eventually travels with... The Matthew character isn't sexist, he's just joking, and I don't get sexism from the movie overall. Besides, it's a period piece... it doesn't take place in 1967. I believe it takes place at the time when the book was written, but it may be more like the 1800's in the movie... I'm not sure, but it doesn't take place in 1967.
In my opinion this song as sexiest as some people think. I think the concept of this song is that Emma feels very out of place and she wants more in life.
I think you may be getting sexism mixed up with feminism? Not sure, but she seems like she wants to be progressive. She wants to have the same rights as a man, to break out of the repressive time in which she lives... that's my final word...
Alan Odonnel I dunno she’s a person who knows she’s unhappy where she is but has no clue what she actually wants or how to get it. Depressingly familiar to me.
no, but i think that girl is sexest, what with all her "if i were a man" talk, so i suppose you could also say that i find the whole film in general a bit sexest, but not at the time it was made cos that was a pretty sexest time frame "women are supposed to be calm and gentle" and all that crap

I know, I'm quite surprised no one has uploaded it. I was absolutely obsessed with that scene as a kid.
I'm surprised as well! I loved how female fashion of the time was both beautiful, and not efficient for walking around the country
My dear friend Diana Lee sings this so beautifully...
Thank you Jennifer. It was a daunting assignment to supply the singing voice for Samantha.
Always loved this song and I know I have Petula Clark's wonderful rendition on one of her LPs.
I was just thinking about Pet Clark's version which is indeed wonderful with a great arrangment to boot!
It is Diana Lee dubbing Samantha Eggar,...She also dubbed Charlie's mom in Willy Wonka and Liv Ullman In Lost Horizon.
REALLY? I never knew that. I was shocked that Liv Ullman sang. Now, I know why. Thank you 😊
She’d better WORK

No problem at all, anything for my number one favourite movie of all time :o)
Love this song

It's actually Madeline it's not Matthew
It's Matthew in the movie but in the JR. Broadway production it's Madeline
stop about the sexism its set in the 1800s
and people including the women thought a man was a man if you get what im saying
She's a crazy 😜 old 👵 coco bird 🐦.
Alan Odonnel I dunno she’s a person who knows she’s unhappy where she is but has no clue what she actually wants or how to get it. Depressingly familiar to me.
