  • This is a unique makeover. It is the customizing and the restoration of two model Roll Royces. What makes this video unique is that, for possibly the first time ever, a Matchbox car has been covered with Gold Leaf!
This was very challenging for me as I have not used this medium before and was unfamiliar with it's properties. I hope that you find it interesting and that it may encourage you to have a go yourselves.
Although the end result is not as well finished as I was expecting or would of liked , as I've said before, it's not all about reaching your destination but more about the journey getting there!

Marty, not that you'll touch gold leaf again, but having done a fair bit of it myself you need to polish the base metal to a mirror to get a flaw free finish.

Paul Sparr Interestingly the British royal family was quite late in adopting Rolls-Royce cars: since the Edwardian era, royals had Daimlers, but Rolls-Royces were for businessmen. The Queen Mother kept a Daimler though, with custom paint job and a few optional extras.

Well done Kevin ... and Marty, you too on the cars. I've worked a bit with gold leaf and surface prep (smoothie smooth smooth!) is the key. Also, you can get edible gold leaf fairly cheaply. It doesn't have exactly the same reflective shine, but it's just as bright and cheaper than what you get for gilding. You may want to drop a note to Diecast Resurrection and see what he might do for a paint-based approach. Always a pleasure. Thanks.

Both Rolls' turned out all right. I have always used the Selleys paint stripper, now I know to stay with it. Never know what you will find inside a Matchbox: that spider egg sac! A very interesting experiment. Shows how damnably fiddly this job is. The scale of a Matchbox model only serves to make it even more difficult. If and when you get around to doing it again in real gold leaf you know now what you're likely going to be up against and hopefully you'll get the finish you wanted. In the meantime it looks pretty cool anyway and it opens up the possibility of an interesting and effective technique to use. The interior looks superb on this car too.
The red one came up well. The finish on that one was perhaps more subtle and in keeping with the Rolls.
Never mind Kevin, at least you know now what it would feel like to win "Best supporting actor"!

I was thinking the same, get some real gold leaf, say for my Ford GT-40. I'm in Thailand so it should be easy. Meanwhile I wonder if you preheat your paint and body before spray will you lose the bumps? I don't think you did any sanding either. Prep.
To my astonishment the first time I tried a make-over the red paint job on my Matchbox Berlinetta came out glassy!! Warm climate??? But because I had no primer it came off easily and also was a tad transparent because I stopped spraying immediately when I was seeing the glassy result. I got the same satisfying glassy white finish on my GT-40 with broken A pillars. Glassy on the first passy. Am I some kind of magician or what? Time will tell. Thanks as always, Paul in warm Thailand.
