Hi in the future you need to start doing with ev Suv too...
Please do a video of 5 seater 4x4s, include the LC 300 GR sport, G Wagaon, Jeep, Jimmy and the Ineos Grenadier.
Defender should have been in Rock crawl mode not mud and ruts for some reason it climbs hills best in this mode would have walked it.
Where's the gen 4 Pajero?
Why you don't consider Mahindra's Scorpio N.
its a good OFFROADER
I would choose the Defender just because there is a beautiful girl at my local dealer, and I know that Land Rover ownership means I will be able to see her every week when I am in for mechanical repairs and the fixing of various electrical problems.
😀😀
That's the way my man you can basically date her at that point.
Sounds an expensive way to get a date .. there are cheaper ways 😂
Chess not checkers
10 seconds of pleasure and a lifetime of misery owning a Land Rover this way
Patrol went up like the terrain is absolutely nothing 😭
Crazy, chewing it. Speechless.
Because of good gas whithout stop!
A proper offroader
The Prado performed like the Fortuner when you locked the centre diff because the fortuner is always locked between the front and rear axles when in 4WD. You are essentially punishing the Prado for having a full time 4WD system for safety on the road. Toyota clearly tells you to lock the centre diff for off-road conditions so it is basically pretty silly to criticise it for your failure to use it properly. Otherwise it was a an interesting test.
Terrible traction control though. The same argument applies to the 300, lc and patrol and they didn't struggle
@@kichaa13 I debate the use of the word terrible. It is not meant to be used in such off-road conditions without locking the centre diff. When he did lock it the system worked as it should. I don’t know if the LC 300 and Patrol lock the centre diffs automatically in the mud and snow settings he used on the test but no doubt the newer system in the LC 300 and the older one in the Y62 Patrol are a bit better than the one in the Prado. But used properly the Prado system is very effective.
I was thinking the same thing, why weren't all the diffs locked? They are supposed to be locked when off roading, not just for going up hill
@@peterj5751 I would disagree, the same approach was taken with all the cars the testing was rather consistent across all platforms, start off basic and add the features until it works. the 300 LC and Patrol don't lock anything in auto mode (onroad mode)
@@BrandonHumphries-gy1gk my view applies equally to all vehicles with permanent 4WD as an option. They were all put at an illogical disadvantage to the vehicles with only part time 4WD because the latter never have a differential action between the front and rear axles. So, the traction control on all the vehicles with only part time 4WD were only required to deal with cross axle slip whereas all the vehicles with permanent 4WD had to deal with front to rear and cross axle slip. This is a huge difference when you consider that without locking the centre diff all the torque wants to go to only 1 wheel as opposed through 2. If the vehicle doesn’t offer the choice to lock the centre diff, fine, that is what you are given to work with. But when the manufacturer provides the option to lock it and recommends you do but you simply don’t push the button, it is being unfair. You may as well say the cars with part time 4WD should stay in 2WD because that is how they come from the showroom. At the end of the day the unlocked 4WD option on those vehicles is simply there for enhanced stability on sealed roads, not for off-road conditions.
For the Pajero Sport/Triton, mud mode allows for a fair bit of slip. The most reactive to braking slipping tires would be rock mode, which has the least slip out of the off road modes. I bet it would've performed better in rock mode than in mud mode considering the mud wasn't all that thick to benefit wheelspin.
I too was thinking mud mode won’t be the best.
That's a good point, Mud mode is meant to allow wheel spin so you can clear out the tyres.
Patrol and Pajero is really impressed in this challenge worth every penny 👌
if the interior wasn't a time capsule from 2005 i would want one
Pajero in indonesian version has full digital on its MID
@@hampps4729 Better that way. I hate obnoxious screens.
@@MiGujack3 I’m not referring to the screens. This interior is disgusting. It’s a mess, a good old interior should look timeless
@@hampps4729Go to nissan and request them to manufacture a rhd version of middle east top spec patrol. They will do it just pay the price. Its made in japan and they can make rhd version of middle eastern spec for special request. In india there are a few middle eastern patrols with rhd . Updated interiors as well. You will have to pay lexus lxoney but you will have the best suv . You can add 34 inch tyre stock. Yes stock.
Loved how Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero sport and Nissan Patrol performed well in their own category and won. Makes me proud and happy owning a Pajero Sport for 3 years.
The way that Nissan Patrol ate up the 45% hill it was smooth like a knife cutting through butter🙆🏽♂️
The Defender auto diff lock was so seamless compared to the Rexton 😂
The defender was also terrific the way it hit the brakes at the worst possible moment .....
And the rest !
@@einfelder8262 I really do think the tester (Paul) taped the breaks to make it look bad and give the others a chance, even if he claims he didn't.
@@hardergamer Conspiracy theorists abound, but if you really think he fudges things, take a look at how the Ford rubbish fares on these tests - he loves his POS Ford so much he would hide their total failure. So you're wrong, mate. And where were you at your school English classes? He did not tape a break, whatever that is, and he also did not tap a brake.
@@maxblack9204it also looks twice the price which has to be taken into account
Patrol just made that look so effortless even after it downpoured. And to think it competed with the new generation of LC's. Good going Nissan
Not to mention that engine is basically bombproof. They have used it for racing/nascar with over 800-1000hp.
@@GT3.00 Yep, their V8 is also insanely tanky though I'm a little sad that it seems like Nissan will stop putting them in the next Patrol since the QX 80 will be a V6 TT
@@HotSneks I think the new engine is gonna be really good. It´s in the same family as the VR38 which is probably the best V6 engine of all time and one of the best engines of all time. An engineering masterpiece. I think Nissan knows exactly what their doing and this new engine is not gonna dissapoint. And the Infinity QX80 interior and exterior is MUCH better than the LX600. I have no doubt the Patrol is gonna look better than the LC300 in both exterior and interior, have a fantastic engine and be very capable off road. I dont know too much about the new 9-speed transmission.
That Patrol was very impressive. The way it handled the 45 degree grade was just awesome. A deserving winner for sure.
Such an awesome vehicle...
Yeah patrol fanboys at it again
Don't confuse 40% gradient with 45 degree angle. Two very different measurements.
Based on the matrix at the end it looked the the Toyota Land Cruiser and Fortuner won.
@@charpsteve36 I thought the Fortuner did great.
THE NISSAN PATROL WAS JUST A BEAST!!!
Great to see Pajero Sport & Nissan Patrol perform so well as they are both old platforms now & are souch cheaper than the competition & have proven reliability as they have been around for a while , Prado was disappointing but i think with Diff lock engaged on the moguls it would have been fine , but the others performed fine without it 👍
Didn't a whole bunch get through without rear lockers on though? Something NQR with prado.
@@cyc00000CDL
So the only reason the Lexus didn’t make up the 45% gradient was because it didn’t have all terrain tyres like the Land cruiser
Pajero Sport and Patrol ❤❤❤❤ my all time favourites !!! Very good 4wd systems !
Pajero and Patrol winning!!! Hell yeah!!
The old guys!
How was the Panera winning
If you read my comment you will remember this, the Patrol Y62 is a legendary for the next 20 years from now, no one factory can beat it for the function and overall performance, value for the money and equation very hard to reach, well done Nissan 👍
The Mitsubishi Super Select 4WD system is amazing especially if towing on gravel
It’s funny that the Y62 Patrol has been overlooked for the last 13 years with the LC seemingly always winning this type of comparisons but now , all of a sudden, it’s a beast and the best at what it has always done. Go figure. Goes to show it’s been under rated and overlooked all these years.
Honestly I think most buyers didn't overlook it though, it sold well worldwide. Furthermore, it gathered tons of very positive reviews since it was launched, especially after the MSRP drop.
Petrol is extremely unreliable, they lose value really fast and overheat a lot. We do sand dune trips and barely any one of our team will use a petrol
@@lifeisamazing9980 Extremely unreliable? Not what I've read honestly unless you use bad fuel. What have you heard?
@@lifeisamazing9980 your funny
@@lifeisamazing9980wtf, it's literally the complete opposite, modern diesels are very unreliable and hate being revved which cooks them in the dunes. I can't think of a single petrol in the last 30 years that is less reliable than it's diesel counterpart of any make
Interesting to see to “old school”, lowest cost and lower tech 4wds getting the win. Goes to show that new, isn’t always better. Great review guys.
Old is gold as they say
True just used to install rear diff lock, have about 1/2 the power of most of these vehicals, slower off the lights, but go anywhere and no fearing something might fail. 80% of people are to young to ever know . We used to call them trucks because that’s what they were back in the day.
Fortuner is old-school, It is non-comfortable and based on Hilux truck and absolutely nothing to do with Prado. Only part-time, has rear lock, doesn't have smart systems and I think it is cheapest car ever.
$107k Patrol? low cost?
Patrol starts at $85k plus orc. Defender 110 starts at $115k and LC300 $108k.
I like that you have standardized the different tests of these vehicles on very light off road conditions. This is the best way to showcase these vehicle's true capabilities and accurately make comparisons.
Excellent choice of winner CarExpert. The Nissan Patrol deserves so much more recognition and is so underrated for no reason. What a beast of an offroader and NA V8 power! One day I'll own one

Feedback from Kenya. Fantastic work, Paul and the rest of the CarExpert Team. The Pejero Sport is value for the dollar and and excellent choice for 4 cylinder category. Kudos.
The Nissan Patrol owned that scene. No wonder many Aussies love them on and off tarmac!
😅😅
I'm seeing a lot of defender's in kenya than Pajero
For defender of you want it to hold the gear longer you should use sand mode it will make a huge difference
They probably tried, but the dial didn’t work… being a Land Rover and all. Rolling garbage.
@@attananightshadow ?
True, Sand mode would've been worthy there. Also, Mud Ruts with DSC manually disabled would've allowed even more wheelspin for the steepest incline.
Land Cruiser - we were almost stuck in an unexpected snow blizzard here in Tassie last winter. We used the crawl function to cover a zigzag piece of icy road late in the day and very glad we did. A number of 2wd nufties were ahead of us causing pileup carnage!!
Love what you are all doing!!
Cheers, Al.
Glad to see the Pajero Sport up there. I’ve owned mine for a little over 9 months now, and it’s honestly such a great car.
I’ve surprised a few people in big modified rigs out on some moderate tracks.
Even if the Fortuner comes pretty close in the off-road test, the fact you can drive in 4H on sealed surfaces in Pajero, and that it’s several thousand $ cheaper makes it a great deal!
Deserves to be much higher in the sales charts.
Not really, I mean it's great off road but thats about it. It's a pretty bland offering otherwise to be fair. It didn't perform particularly well in either the performance or towing testing they did.
Yet the off road racing champion Dakar Rally is the Pajero. 😅😅😅
@@jackfieldsjack1061 Last time they won was 16 years ago... recent winner is the Hilux. Although these cars don't have much to do with production cars.
@@lamborghini0610 I don’t tow with mine and have no intention to.
In any case, at the extremes of towing I think people should buy a vehicle that suits. Anything close to 3t should be done in 300 series or a Patrol at the very least.
A light off-road camper trailer, or small caravan and you’re going to be fine.
Isn’t the Pajero Sport a Triton with an extended rear roof?
The Defender has the best traction control, ground clearance, approach and depature angles, and a wading depth of 900 mm, best in class. I think the traction control system should be judged on how many times the car spins the wheel, the better systems have less wheel spin.
And that also next time they should make sure to use the 'gravel/snow/grass' setting instead of 'mud and ruts' for the shale/gravel hill (Not just the defender but all cars tested)
They tend to be endless money pits after just a year or 2
@yslee1401 The new defender has been out since 2019. It's not as bad as the previous landrover models. While all modern cars have their share of problems with the electronics and sesnors, the engine is in a house built by JLR, and it's been very reliable. Also, the ZF transmission is bulletproof.
@YS LEE Oh yawn!

Agree that on an overall basis, for an all new model vehicle, it’s been very reliable, and no major issues.
The 6 cylinder Ingenium motors ( petrol & diesel ) are fantastic.
Defender won their Tow Test video.
It’s a fantastic vehicle.
It has Safety / Tech / Comfort, it’s a brilliant daily driver, and excellent at towing & off road. 👍
This is both very informative and massively entertaining at the same time. Thank you for this, CarExpert Channel!
Hey Paul! Some feedback on the flairing with the Mitsubishi, it's actually going through the gears, unless you are manually selecting the gears, as thr wheel spin increases, the gears will change. Mud mode does that as wheel slip is necessary to get out of bogs. Perhaps try gravel or sand mode next time 😊 from experience
Yes. I could see it was changing gears. Vehicles (autos) do that as revs get high - they upshift.
I'm a patrol fanboy but e en I was surprised by its effortless climbing ability. Also cudos to the pajero sport.
That final defender round after all the other suvs, it was crazy
The first Defender round was also perfect. No crazy stupid wheel spinning and the only reason for a couple of attempts on the 45% was the tyres were caked with mud the first 2 tries so they were slicks. Then it just walked up.
Hill decent was on
Brilliant. One of the most comprehensive, thorough and professional online reviews I have seen.
I love the tests you do for the cars! This is a great companion to Driving Sports TV. Very nicely setup and articulated narration.
Just as I expected, the off-road test is where its at. Like the ute test, one of the most sensible tests ever done with the only difference is the awarding part here is better & definitely well thought-out.
Not suprised with the Pajero Sport, it really performed the best out of other 4-cyl here just like the Triton, if only you guys considered how it performed better than the better-equipped Navara that time. The Fortuner clearly is the closest contender but wasn't as effortless despite the lesser wheelspin(Super Select really does that to get more traction btw hehe).
Suprised how the Patrol did but a well-deserved win tbh. Goes to show that despite the age, like the Mitsubishi, it is still the absolute performer 👌🏼
I think the wheelspin has something to do with the off road mode settings on why the Pajero Sport slipped quite a bit. The mud mode intentionally allows slip since that helps in thick mud, while rock and gravel mode is much more reactive in preventing wheelspin. In the given situations, I think rock mode or gravel mode would've been the more ideal modes for the traction control. Sand is also similar to mud but holds a lower gear to have more torque to the wheels and allows a degree of wheelspin, so also not ideal here.
The Patrol was a real surprise, in North America it's generally regarded as an overgrown mall crawler (it's sold as the Nissan Armada here), absolute beast of an engine, but with a nasty habit of melting down its catalysts. Though most NA market examples are also sold without the rear locker and with 21in wheels and rubber band tires.
lmao the driver itself said there was a mistake climbing the navara, so no they're absolutely equal
@@faithbuenavista1441 both were automatics and weren't driven in manual mode, but how come the Mitsubishi's transmission was able to help the ute climb easier despite the less ground clearance and highway terrain tires vs the all terrain ones in the Nissan?
This is as basic as it could get, even majority here noticed it too 😉
Really good review. Well thought out, covered all scenarios, gave each vehicle their best shots possible to get around the obstacles, kept the playing field fair for all vehicles, and really well summarized in the end. I generally do not drop reviews, but you have earned this one. Keep up the really awesome work! Cheers from India!
In my experience with air suspension, I’ve learnt to only raise the car to max height if I really need the clearance because it comes at the cost of articulation. You get the most wheel travel in one of the middle settings and that explains why the defender made had more traction during the last run.
Yes. You never use off-road height except to clear an obstacle. Misuse of it actually makes the vehicle perform worse.
Defender also had slippery mud caked tyres on the first 2 attempts and once it was cleared - it walked up.
Good point!
@@CarExpertAusplease can you a bit more hardcore off roading with the petrol
Yes good point ! I think the Land Rove climbs more easiest with the good height and with the good drive mode. Maybe with the climb intelligent cruise too (it's less funny). With Land Rover the mode is really important. The different Terrain Response modes radically change the approach to different surfaces.
Great thorough tests and production from CE as always, alongside with the models that some regions don't get. Watched the full 90mins video without skipping a single minute because it's so well tested including the different options and setting tested in such a clear way Instead of jokes and unnecessary talks.
The Paj getting the recognition it deserves there. The only real down side to it is its fuel tank but otherwise its a decent wagon and priced well.
And with the best real-world fuel economy of all vehicles tested here !

The patrol is a real beast, both the v6 and v8.
The way the Patrol just walked up that hill :D
The Defender is just one all round awesome vehicle! I'd love me a V8 Defender!
The Pajero with the super select was always going to do well. I know most really don't like the Mitsi's but I'd take a Pajero any day over the rest of the field for it's price and reliability. Especially the Ford/JEEPs as they are junk
I saw am australia based comparison, adapted to the harsh conditions of the island, and Mitsubishi came on top big time due to reliability, colling sistems and oversized key pieces.
It's notball about capabilities. I want to see that same list of cars in 5 years with 60000km and then we speak.

Loved it thanks. Really enjoying these comparison test videos. Very well structured. Helpful, informative and entertaining to boot. Really like your style Paul. Yeah, I was a bit worried on the Ford Everest 4-Cyl uphill , It did look like it was about to roll for a second there. Nice save. Take care and keep the great reviews coming.
The hill descent control on the Pajero Sport can be turned on when the vehicle is rolling down a hill. It will just maintain the speed at which it is turned on. Although you cannot use cruise control to change the speed, you can use the brake and acclerator to modify the descent speed. Overall, it's a very good system.
That explains why my 4x2 Pajero Sport (Montero Sport in my country) do downshifts and maintains a safe speed whenever I'm going down a steep road.

Very good video for comparison of big SUV's. For the lx 570 I think it could climb the loose hill if it had better tyres with crawl control. That Nissan patrol is a beast!
Imagine patrol with 295/60/20 at tyres on stock wheels in middle east updated spec. Match made in heaven. Best of the best with great quality.
@@oriondoublecrossed Or better yet, Duratracs or KO2s on 18in wheels. Dubs don't belong on off road vehicles, neither do tires with less than 65% aspect ratio. Don't encourage the proliferation of the steam roller wheels and rubber band tires on lifted trucks that are oh so popular in red state America haha.
@@mrvwbug4423 yeah those wheels look silly. But 295/60/20 are more than enough on offroad because their sidewall is as tall as 265/65/18. You will have width + sidewall. People tend to go for wrong wheels for their truck which kills the ride.
That's what I have been waiting for and will find time and watch, enkosi.
🙌
Awesome and comprehensive vide mate! Well done. Would of been good to have a wrangler rubicon in there also.
For these big comparison tests, I'd love to see you throw in a wild card and include an older vehicle (or two) from a previous generation, just to give an indication of how far vehicles are progressing. Perhaps the ageing Prado fulfilled that role on this test 😉, but I reckon there'd be some owners in your readership who'd jump at the chance to tag along for the day and see their pride and joy tested and compared.
Throw in a previous gen LR Defender with diff locks installed, or a modern Jeep Wrangler Rubicon or Ford Bronco. Good articulation and lockers at both ends > all the electronics in the world.
Patrol is looking really good in so far in your tests. If Australia got the USA interior update it would be leading these vehicles by miles. Personally I don’t mind the simple tech…. Some of these are ridiculous.
I don't get Nissan. They give new interiors to the US and no locker, they give you guys a locker and an old interior 🤦♂️
@@AndreAKAua Hell, Nissan doesn't get Nissan.
@@AndreAKAua get gulf edition it have new interior with locker
@@davep2945middle east version has it all
Beige interiors better than even lexus or up there. Diff lock and more chrome goodies. Alsp ambient lighting. Diff lock and upgraded leather interior with latest hbmc. The middle east spec nissan patrol le platinum city will beat landcruiser in everything. From comfort to capability to even luxury given the beige interior is sol good. Check it out on youtube yourself.
I'd take patrol anytime rather than the pathatic Armada. The suspension, front, rear pumpking, evening the drive shafts are completly different. Patrol is a much tougher true off roader, rather than the mall crawler armada.
I reckon the Defender shouldn't have been on "mud ruts" for that last climb. It has a Gravel/Snow setting that would have been a better mode or perhaps even Sand mode which keeps your revs up.
Turn DSC off it will go up easy.
Fantastic report and comparison.
SuperSelect II 4WD 💪💪
Ive been waiting for this
👌🏼
Great reviews and thank you
I personally would choose the Mitsubishi if I were shopping the 4cyl segment, it has the best exterior look (imo) and Mitsubishi is known to make good diesel engines since they were the number 1 diesel engine manufacturer in Japan at one point before their multiple incidents which caused a decline in sales for some time.
This is the reason why we have 4 diesel Mitsubishis in our household. The engines are tried and tested, and pretty much bulletproof.
One of the most relevant “off road” test is sand driving for Aussies I’d say. Great to see sand/beach driving test. I guess bit more applicable to soft roaders as all these will/should dive on sand with ease.
Enjoying these tests Paul, very well done.
I would love to see an older gen vehicle in there just to show the difference.
We had a 2010 VX diesel Prado for a long time, it was unbelievable just how capable it was off road. I know it's under powered and outdated tech, but I think you may be supposed just how good they were 13 years ago.
And as a used option about 1/3 the cost of the average here.
In my country, a 2010 Prado VX turbo diesel goes for almost the same price as a 2020 Pajero Sport
Great video! Interested to see how the LC300 fairs with just 4wd auto compared with the patrol
a very fine test indeed, totally without bias
Overall a really good test. I did notice, with the Everest, you buried the throttle all the way up the 45 degree incline. Yet previously, with the Rexton, you said you would not do that and subsequently failed it.
The Rexton has the sketchy auto locking rear diff. I wouldn’t have felt comfortable putting the boot in up that incline with the potential for that diff to randomly kick in.
He’s not consistent.
@@Amsterlager that locking diff does the job, even if it isn't the smoothest available. But looking at the ford everest where you can drink a coffee before it does his job, and hearing from paul... excelent... seems not very objective. And i really don't like that rexton, but to be honest, it offers way more for the money you pay than the ford.
Paul had it in mud ruts mode which I question. I reckon the TC would be better in normal mode. Could even consider doing slippery mode as it was raining. On the 4cyl he seemed quite concerned with rolling the car so didn't want to put his foot down a bit more, which explains why the V6 got up as it has just that bit more torque. Considering some of the other cars he played with the settings a lot more, he didn't really try much besides the obvious on this one.
@@markgibbons378 the problem with using slippery mode is that that’s telling the system that there’s not much traction so it is likely to throttle back the power to avoid the slipping which is now (it’s been told) much more likely.
Wow surprised the Paj did better up the 45 degree challenge than the Everest and the Paj also had H/T tyres.
TAYO tyres on Paj Sport are very average, to say at least
@@radissimo1Yep I changed to Michelin Lattitude much better then again I don't do any off road just for towing on black stuff. Michelin are incredibly quiet and grip is insane.
Well done Paul and co. Huge effort and job well done! I had higher expectations from Prado but boy it shows its age.
Amazing video, I like the consistency of your testing. I never knew the Patrols were so good, we don't get them here in England.
Land Rovers are always twice as expensive because you need two of them. One to drive while the other is in the shop.
