  • Eldrick Jacobs of Flint & Port Hat Co. walks us through how he repairs a tattered, 70-year-old Resistol hat, that has been passed down three generations while maintaining its character. The process includes cleaning the felt, re-blocking the hat to fit the client's head, trimming the brim, and re-crowning the hat to its original shape. Although there is a hole in the crown of the hat, the client opted for the hole to be preserved, to carry on the story of the hat and keep the memory of its previous wearers. By restoring this hat, the hat is being made to last another 70 years or so, with minimal maintenance needed.

    Excellent flow in the video. Taught very well. The speaking was very clear and concise with not a lot if rambling on. This young man defined what he was doing, how he was doing it and what he was using to achieve the goal. I enjoy the no-nonsense approach to learning from such wonderful artisans as this milliner. Thank you for being a super resource to help me as I work to restore customers hats.

    Wow ur a bloody magician! You maintained just the right patina while the hat looks nice and fresh again. That's a 300$ piece now! And I love how chunky your sweatband is - will indeed provide some structural integrity as you said! Simply awesome job😎‼️

    Hello Great video , just wondering as I am faced and in the midst of an hole in my hat in the crown , what is the best way to fix it , IE; so far covering it with a matching color from the out side and sewing it down looks obvious and too much fabric . I thought to try having it patched from the inside , using a patch just a little bit bigger than the hole but very difficult to sew , would a little glue work ? Can you please advise or have you a video on that ? My hat is a vintage fur felt men's fedora I bought over 30 years ago in Chelsea New York City in an antique shop and second hand store. There is no one who does this work where I live in SW Florida I have a friend who helping me and they don't have the hat restoration tools. Thanks Liam

    I never understood how you can get material clean without washing it, the years of dirt and sweat is impregnated throughout the material. When you wash your clothes in a washing machine you see how dirty the water is.
    When I send my suit to the dry cleaners and they say they just spot clean a suit I know that my sweat and dirt is not being removed.
    If there's something I don't understand please explain.

    Wants to maintain the character it gained over the years, 20 seconds later destroys all character it gain over the years... Nice one... Really nice.

    • @swungover
      @swungover Рік тому +5

      Well, "character" is an abstract term that means different things to the eye of the beholder.
      The hat had obviously gone through a lot of abuse via negligence. It had probably been smushed in a closet or drawer for decades, and thus looked more like a lump of felt rather than anything like it's original form.
      The artisan and/or client obviously thought the the "character" of the hat was... the patina of the felt, the outer-band, and the hole (probably created by grabbing the hat by the crown; though I think I speak for everyone when I say we all hope it's actually from a bullet hole that just missed the head.)
      The lumpy shape it had gotten, from being stuffed wherever it was, was obviously not an important part of its character, and perhaps it might not even be possible to determine what shape it originally was. (Though usually the shape of the patina lets you know.) (UPDATE: The video synopsis says it was restored to its original shape.)
      I don't think him changing the shape is a big deal, because the thing about a good felt hat is that the shape is changeable. So the next generation that gets the hat can change the shape again. The thing that can't be changed however, was the brim size. Him cutting so much of that off was the only thing in his process that made me sad.
      But, it's not my hat. It belongs to the descendant of the original owner.
      And what is life about, if not reshaping what the past has given us into something that fits us?
