Hey old timer... Glad you are still tinting the way you were taught back in the day, but sorry to break it to you but there was no "hack" in your video at all. This is how I still tint windows and the shop by buddy works at does as well. We were taught this way by his father who originally opened the tint shop... Ok maybe we use a utility knife and squeegee but essentially the same process.

Ive been playing with tint for the past year, watching countless tint videos. Each person would go into detail in one area but leave another area completely out and leave it up to you to figure out. Needless to say you have the BEST tint info videos I have seen to date. I really struggled heat shrinking rear windows 2-3 hours fighting with a rear window now down to 45min to 1 hour at most. Once again thanks to your videos. Keep up the great work! Thanks again!

Now i always extend my film beyond the window seals at the bottom usually by loosening the door panel to get the seal out the way and the reason is on a hot day if you dont take the film past the seals when you roll down the window the window seal will catch the film and it may crinkle it right off the window. Depending on how hot it is it will cause the film to loosen its adhesive quality allowing the seal edge to buckle the film or lift it entirely. Just thought I'd point that out as I saw you did not extend your film passed the bottom window seal.

    • @STREETLIFE167

It is.. in fact I've even used less. I used a damn credit card and newspaper to dry because it never leaves lint AND it's cheaper! The guys that I went to school with that didn't have single parent homes got hand me down cars senior year or just after graduation wanted tints on their Caprice Classics or Datsun and Hyundai whatevers.. so we all went to a tint shop and got banged over the head for $100 or so. The biggest mistake was the guy allowed me in the shop to watch. I started tinting with the crudest tools known to man. I was averaging about a car a week that summer for pocket change or use of the car for a day or two. Until the NYPD started giving tickets or warnings provided that you peel your tint off the front windows right on the spot. Guess they thought it was easier than filling out a ticket. They clued in after they noticed they were pulling over the same cars a week later after I'd redone them. They were like "we know these kids ain't drug dealers riding around in Hyundai Excels with graduation tassels over the rear views so what gives?" They asked who was doing their tints and how much? By the end of that Summer I did damn near all of the personal cars in the three adjoining precincts and some unmarked take home cars for supervisors. They left my friends alone too which was a pretty nice side effect.

Thanks, nice video, looks like a lot of folks don't know how hard it is to tint a window hands on,I have done a few and let me tell yea its not as easy as some of these folks would like to think.my guess is 80%of the negative remarks are coming from those who have never tried to do tint.I didn't see many/any, taking you up on your challenge.I have ripped up and thrown away tint by trying to handle it when putting it in a slanted back window let alone not making cuts or rips wrong along with the folds and,,well you get the idea,,Its Not Easy as it sometimes looks, you do awesome work

Ralph Van Pelt I may be giving my age away here but when watching your video you made me ask the question, "How else can you tint a window?" The way you expertly placed the tint on that window is the only way I thought it can be done. Also, the auto parts store or the automotive section of Kmart was the only place we knew to buy tint. We didn't have internet to order anything or to learn anything and the tiny bit of instructions that came with the roll of tint didn't give very good directions back then. Trial and error. I remember the first tint job I ever did for myself, I think i bought enough tint to have done 3 cars between the dirt or wrinkles that would piss me off so I would rip it off and start over again. The only thing you have in your video that makes it easier than how we did it is, you are inside. We picked a calm day rushed to get a window done before a breeze and dust kicked up. None of us had a garage to go do tinting in. Way to go you do great work and thanks for the trip down memory lane.

The hair dryer takes a minute to heat up because the intake (on the back of the dryer where the air goes in) in clogged with dust. It pops right off so it can be back-flushed. But that's another hack! I learned a few things about tinting and it is entertaining. Thanks Ralph.

Great Video... very helpful as I will be tinting some windshields for our fleet of trucks in our shop, buying a whole lot of 50% tint online was cheap, I know I got a spray bottle, license, a couple different blades... Ya'll make it look so easy though!
I get very confused with different types of tint, I've seen some videos where guys peel the tint apart (2 layers), and some that just spray, stick, then apply heat, stretch, etc..
I am trying to fix my windshield which was tinted beautifully at a local garage, after watching this video I feel like a dummie for paying and not doing it myself. A lot of folks get robbed blindly to get their cars tinted around here (NJ). It is illegal to have tinted windshields in NJ but EVERY other car on the road is tinted.. and way darker than 50%.
The police only pull folks over if they are having a bad day or you are legitimately driving like a jerk (or are a jerk), then it's the automatic pull-over excuse "Pulled you over because your windows are tinted!" as an officer once said, while 20+ cars passed us on the road tinted even darker... he let me go with a warning. I apologized and told him I purchased my vehicle like this over 3 years ago and never had any issues... I was on the state boarder far away from home. Our local officers around here know everyone and don't seem to care.
I like the 50% on my front 2 windows (driver/passenger sides) and especially my windshield's 50% as I commute versus the sun in the AM and again in the PM ride from and to work/home... the shop I got it done at did a great job, and did not mess up.. and they were fairly inexpensive compared to various "tint installers" around here. Unfortunately when I had to go to the NJ Inspection station as I was due to renew my window sticker, they forced me to cut my tint on my windshield (where the new inspection sticker would go).
Our Inspection station's in NJ are so incredibly biased, prejudiced, etc. I was picked out of the line when I was 3 cars back. I drive a 2001 Chevy Blazer, the line at the DMV had 2 cars in front of me (newer BMW's, Audi, etc..) and 1-2 cars behind me with "factory tint" which was darker than my 50%.. yet they did not ask them to remove their tint or hassle them at all. I however, had to take my scraper (anticipating this nonsense they would pull). In NJ if you have your driver/passenger side windows tinted you simply just have to pull into the inspection station with your windows rolled down... they cannot ask you to roll your windows up anymore (no safety inspections anymore.. just emissions). If you pull in and they see tints on your front windows they used to FAIL you, or they would tell you to pull out of the station and come back in with your windows down... so go figure.
My old inspection sticker was already removed when my vehicle was tinted so it was not stuck inside the windshield/tint. Even though I showed them and told them 2 years ago they didn't care, I still had to shave a 9x9 inch box on my damned windshield to place the new 5x5inch'sh sticker. I actually had it perfect (the size of the sticker) and they demanded I cut it more "so they could see".. I am not sure what else they wanted to see... sigh.
Now I have a nice box cut into my tint on the driver's side windshield. I have measured the "void" and am ready to try to patch the tint hole. I know it won't look 100% perfect, but neither is my 2001 Blazer, I am just looking to safely take off my new inspection sticker, apply the tint, then stick the stupid sticker back on. The Inspection Station "Inspectors" claim that the sticker must be "visible" which is why you cannot have tint, regardless of that nonsense excuse (because you can clearly see the darned sticker 100% fine through the 50% tint).... I think I did a decent job removing the tint for the sticker... I could have been fancier, but I was in-line and getting yelled at to hurry up.
Sorry about the rambling on here, but I hope that I can patch my little spot up, unless someone is really looking hard enough, they won't even notice, nor do I care. It's a shame because 98% of the whole windshield is still tinted perfectly, I just need to slap on a 9x9 inch square patch... wish me luck!

This has been in the streets for many years, i live in texas and every hood has that one guy that puts tint, or you could easily take your ride to your local flea market (pulga) guys go work there and they charge like $15 for all cars and its five windows, or $20 if you own a truck
they use this same method minus the hairdryer since its always in triple digit weather down here and they take approximately 3minutes per window and 5-8minutes on the back window, it comes out looking clean no bubbles, wrinkles, nor discoloration plain professional. Good video if ppl never seen this "Hack" before i guess ✊

I did not know a cop could make you rip it off. Hate to hear that.

Where I live it's illegal for front glass to be tinted I knew that I was just seeing if I could get away with it haha but I'm in the process of attempting to get a medical waiver to exempt me from the law

Looks like in the US is illegal to tint the windshield. I live in Puerto Rico and we can tint the whole car, including the windshield. The only restriction we have is that the tint film can't be lower than 35%.

lol i didnt know you could do it any other way.... and honestly, until about a year ago i never used the outside of the window to shape my tint... i left film on and shaped inside of window and peeled and pressed. took half the time but a tad more difficult... and my solution was water/clear dawn dish soap

Nice job. I tried my own tint - ONCE. No way no how do I have the patience and it was a mess, so for the relatively low cost I have left it to pros ever since. First thing that gets done on a newly purchased vehicle.

Isn't this more like, "How to tint windows without computer cut film, and using the tools you have while achieving less than perfect, but acceptable results?" HAHA. I mean, "back in the day" this is how it was done, right? (Probably had nicer squeegees and such.) But for the most part, tinting is about cleanliness and good cuts isn't it? For a guy that was really into DIY, why not give it shot? Every "pro tinter" out there had a "first" at some point.
