Well done as always. I think since the patterned pieces are speratic on the billet a karambit might bring it all together. Give that some thought. Thanks for sharing John.
You gotta love it when you see someone preparing to do something like grinding before a cut in the video and then see marks and scrapes along the knuckles afterwards.
what i found works awsome with this cannister billet as you call it. Is use two deferent steel powders. It will give you an awsome look at the end. And even though i never did try with cutoffs, it should give you much more texture in the end. It will fill up all the "empty" pattern look on the billet. :D Keep up the good work!!
Try, try as my mom would say!! Don’t give up...! A fish/ trout knife might work. I don’t think you should cut any of the billet of but forge the shape of the knife so you don’t loss any small patterns that in the billet. Great job buddy!!! Love the video!!!
Stainless tubing is the way to go for sure. I don’t remember which video it was but I mentioned using stainless tubing. Not sure if you seen it, but glad to see it being used.
I see the SS Bismarck Larkin in the background. That's too bad, but at least you saved the project. I had not heard of fossil Damascus until recently. Though I remember thinking it would be cool to save Damascus scraps for just that reason. A Hatchet would be sweet
Pretty nice looking forge on your bench there....maybe you can do a 15n20 outer for a San mai with damascus core? No preference on a knife style myself...
I have to agree with the last comment keep it simple as far as the blade but the handle and finish work should be something kickass. That’s just my opinion
Damn, just started the video got 12 seconds in and I have to run. I'll catch you it later no doubt. Good to see you're putting out videos at a better clip.
With that Pattern distribution, I bet you can make a pretty interesting Throwing Hatchet/Tomahawk out of it, Forge weld in a 15n20 bit, or if you want to blacken the edge during the etch you can go with pretty much any 1000 series steel.. Ideally 1075 or better. And now that I've read @Wesley McCravy's comment I'm sort of in agreement that it would also make for a really cool looking Hammer :) P.S. My Condolences on that first Billet, poor thing never stood a chance
Titanium skeleton, synthetic tendons and muscles that don't need so much maintenance. Synthetic skin with adjustable sensitivity that can be replaced fairly easily.
Well, it was certainly worth trying, and I think your idea of making the fossil pieces smaller is also worth trying. Seems like the more powdered 1084 in the can, the less pattern one can expect.
Hey bud. If you follow me on IG I'm a lot more active on there. There's actually a knife in the works of this steel that's coming out pretty sweet. The run up to blade show was pretty insane. After that I started aggressively looking for a house and between all of that there just hasn't been much time to film the last few months. But the video on the fossil Damascus Bowie is in the works.
WD40 isn't a degreaser.... it's a mix of lubricants that "displace water" but mostly to lubricate things and prevent corrosion, oxidation, and WELDING! That's a massive no no. That's like wiping down a wood project with some titebond glue to "clean the dust off" right before finishing it. Use acetone! If you use WD40, make sure you're not using it inside a container like with the canister damascus because the WD has no where to go! Also if your pieces look like that after sitting in muriatic acid for that long, seems like it's not working well or something as that still looked very blackened. Dilute, cold, or low amounts of acid wont do too much with emphasis on the cold since it's winter.
@@OldHickoryForge ohh okay very good then, that's right, I must not have heard that but I figure that should work well then. You should try vinegar some day instead of the muriatic, you'd be surprised how strong it is, and if you can have a heater on it or have it in a warmer room it'll go so so fast

What an awesome hack, the SS tube! And the hammer and knife you made me are both PHENOMENAL! People buy his stuff!!!
As always you have cool and fun videos. Makes me want get out in the forge. Thank you and keep up the good work.

U should try drawing out a bar of damascus and then make it into really small cubes, then weld them up in a cannister. :)
This is pretty sick.
I’ve made an off-cut canister Damascus. I think it’s a right of passage. 🤣. I also swear by SS tube for canister, It’s the only way to go, IMO!

Would a wire wheel work to grind it clean better than grinding it away?

Maybe you can make an American style tanto (square point) with this billet. I don't think you have made one on the channel yet
Good cat action lol

@Metal Man Productions hey there ken
“This better work because that took freakin forever” I say these words on everyone of my projects.
Amen
loved the video john where do you buy tour 1084 powder ?

You make a cool stufs.. can you forged axe like a tuatahi racing stile axe ...

Great video. I really like your content. How about making it into a Dagger?
Well, it was certainly worth trying, and I think your idea of making the fossil pieces smaller is also worth trying. Seems like the more powdered 1084 in the can, the less pattern one can expect.
I'd say a nice drop point EDC or camp knife.
What about making a hidden tang seax?
Maybe something double edged to help show off the pattern?
Maybe a survival type knife
Karambit knife, shaped like a dinosaurs claw... it is fossil damascus after all.
A hunter or skinner would be cool
Hatchet or trowel?
A trench knife with brass knuckles on it would be cool.
How about you make a Bowie knife out of the billet?
Keep it simple and basic. A good camp knife or basic hunting knife seems good.
A small kitchen knife for fine chopping .(:
Hey brother. Where are you? What's going on?

make a wakizashi
Chefs knife would look cool.

It’s wd40 brand degreaser. They actually make a lot of different things.

Maybe a knife that can easily be made into a spearhead
Stiletto maybe
damn
A cleaver
Oof, a close 2nd

I think fossil Damascus is actual fossil mane
