Tips and comments:
- Such difficult song must be played very slowly at first, taking care of all the notes played
- When the speed is higher some notes will become more percussive and kind of palm muted, so don't worry about that
- Keep attention to the 4th string notes and make them more present, most of the people don't care about that
- The strumming must be done with 2 or 3 fingers up and down with nails
- The solo muted part uses 6 notes in a row played 3 times: (slap), (neck slap), (slap), (pop), (neck slap), (slap)
- This cover is based on the 5 string bass studio song, not the live version, it's adapted to sound like and arranged if needed (some parts are played in higher octaves), the tabs in my opinion are very accurate, based on lots of videos watched and super slow listening of the studio track.

From 3:12 you raise like in the guitar solos section, but I think he do the main slap starting the “pluck legato pattern” not beginning from the F (3rd fret of the D string) but lower tone plucking from the C (3rd fret of the A string). Same slap pattern but different note from the pluck legato till the E - B chord
"Play Along Tabs". You're a funny guy.
savage :P
I don't understand :/
xD
moriot lol
Jajajajajajajajaja epic!!!!
I like how you put the tab on the screen as if any of us mere mortals would be able to play along. Excellent work
lol seriously D;
all you have to do is bathe your hand in the blood of 5 virgins and your all set
it's actually 44 virgins.
But then they wouldn't be virgins anymore, lol.
OzzyRareTracks You don't have to have sex to bleed...
This is a great beginner slap song
Patrick Berenguer This is no beginner song in ANYTHING XD
One the first songs I learned
(I mean full songs, no way I could have learned this in the beginning)
Its the first song my 9 year old cousin learned on bass
A good beginner slap song is Higher Ground by RHCP, this is an expert slap song
Batboy Carroll that’s the joke
Dude I nailed the rest portions!
Underrated comment. ^
Honestly, this needs to be a top comment
"Well, I remember as it were a meal ago."
Me too. I'm a professional.
Bruh I think les claypool played even the restportion better then us
Ok, so i've got Smoke On The Water down, going to give this a go next.
You're getting ahead of yourself, bud
@Hamish Leckie what?
@@ncrtrooper2856 I hate you...
@Hamish Leckie and you!
i know it's supposed to be a joke but smoke on the water is a very hard song to play on bass
les claypool is an alien end of discussion
And cover solutions
I want them to probe me...
Braden Coiro I wouldn't call what he does singing haha
Interdimensional bass players are grooving our children! - Alex Jones
Now he’s an undead pirate
I thought seven nation army was the easiest beginners bass song until i heard this. Super easy for 1st time players .
but... its played with a guitar
@@xDamage69 well… it is originally played on a six stringed bass
literally the first song I learned
@@cyloops64 I think he’s referring to seven nation army
It's amazing that Les Claypool can do this and sing at the same time. Great cover as always!
+Buttdischarge
Yes bro - its unbelieveable!
What do you mean? Whenever he sings he doesn't play, except later
+Del Taco James That's actually not true at all, maybe for this song and the odd part of other songs....He sings and plays bass at the same time, all the time
You are so thick skulled it's not even funny, I meant in terms of this song
Ok i wasnt sure you even listened to Primus, no need to get so butthurt
I could only imagine what faces you were making while playing this.
Then Les goes and plays this like it's nothing.
and not only that but he does it while singing some weird ass shit
His weird leg dance
He plays it as if it were a meal ago
He's been playing this song at every Primus show for *30 years*. The early draft of this song on Frizzle Fry was way slower. Basically, he wrote it, started slow, and then sped up. You can do it while singing and dancing too, if you have that level of dedication.
Edit: Suck on This, not Frizzle Fry.
Jacob Stough he says "hey baby do you wanna lay down with me, hey baby do you wanna lay Down my side, hey baby do you wanna lay down with me, hey baby hey baby.

If you are as capable of playing a line like this 100% correctly, you are literally a bassist god...
Literally.
Thank you c:
It must have been even harder writing the damn thing!
@@joekinnear4671 btw, les claypool plays this and sings at the same time
I can play it about 75% speed consistently. I admit, once you get the pattern down its not too difficult compare to some other songs. Most of the difficulty is the speed.
That's not what "literally" means.
This is impressive, like extremely impressive. Congratulations, you have played and tabbed out one of the hardest songs to play on the bass, ever.
@nynetynyne How about the part at 3:05? It looks ridiculous to be honest. I could maybe attempt to play that fast with 2/3 fingers, but slap? fuck no
so, i didn't know this for a long time, so forgive me if you already do, but that percussive sound is made by alternating the thumb slap with the fretting hand slap and then some other stuff too....but knowing that helps you get there a little bit.
LRed13, you just gotta get the rhythm down. You should try to learn lacquer head, it has a harder version of this and if you learn this it won’t be as hard
LRed13 MUCH easier than it looks, just practice it very slowly with a metronome at first
My favorite part was the part where Les said “Zaybaedouwannalaidowwimeh?!”
That's like the only part i understood without looking the lyrics
Zeh beh beh. ZEH BEH BEHHH
11 people are "jerry the mouse"
Marco Cantelli well said
Jerry was a racecar driver as far as I know
No pun intended
Genius
@@stefanristic8180 really fckin genius
How is this even possible, this is insane.
2HootHoot its not hard. Just gotta get the flow down. It looks harder to watch than it actually is to play.
2HootHoot Nah dude this song is listed as one of the top 10 hardest songs to play on bass.
It's hard but not impossible, you just have to start insanely slow. It is the hardest song I've ever learned though.
If you are experienced on bass guitar, you can play this song, it isn’t impossible to play, it is just hard to play.
I actually got 0:32 - 0:56 down pretty well
My arm hurts just from watching this
Love your pfp
Playing Tommy the Cat at high temperatures burns your soul

TOOL
this made me laugh in 5.5/8
2 years ago I got into bass guitar. It was(and still is) one of the greatest experiences of my life and i learned my first songs from this guy. ( He`s awesome btw and he deserves all the appreciation any of us can give) And when i first watched this video i was demoralized becasue I couldn`t play a single note of this properly not even when i slowed it down . It made me feel so bad I didn`t even listen to the song on it`s entirety for a year.
Yesterday I felt really stuck because I was going nowhere with my bass playing. I was doing everything i practiced quite well but it was not enough. Then i clicked on this video with a huge disbelief but i still tried it.
I learned the main line in an hour! I still haven`t learned the entire song but even this feels like a miracle.
Always believe in yourself. :)
if you're practicing then even if it looks like you're not making any progress you really are
I've been playing for like 15 years, and that struggle never really goes away, but overcome that challenge enough and you'll hear a riff or solo or a crazy technique that sounds impossible or down right crazy and it won't be a disheartening thing, you'll actually get super excited at the prospect of learning it
I'd recommend learning John the Fisherman from primus as well, very fun. props that you learned some of this song it's out of my league right now
I’m picking up my first Bass Guitar sometime soon! This channel and this song are the main two reasons for it
How'd it go?
Perry Born I’m almost 2 years on now and I play a lot! Currently learning YYZ and I can play Limelight and even parts of Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver
@@residentkrockhead but can you play this song yet? Congrats man. Keep playing
Resident Krockhead Please say when you can this play song
@@residentkrockhead Hi! How is it going?
Me attempting this is basically 3:06
U wish
Why did the high part make me chuckle
I can’t even play that
@@deathsxarsx1805 It's a joke mate.
I laughed so hard 😂
Okay, I think I'm ready to finally start learning this song. God help me.
Alright, I'll try again next year.
@@SamasakiXBL how it go,
@@SamasakiXBL lmfao
Same I'm going to give it a try
Hey this is your annual reminder to try and learn tommy the cat
3:02 ohhhhh maaaaan
Nicolas Vallejos definitely best part
Came here to see this part and the guy just straight up nailed it. Much respect.
The guitar part on this song is just as awesome as the bass.
True but it's not often you hear the bass player wildin' out like this
also the drums, just a perfect song for showcasing musicianship
Mortal men are not meant to make that kinda sound
2:04 That's physically possible I guess
i think you meant 3:04
@@robertnagy3942 Nah because that part is only rithym. But an insane rithym lol
The bass line is insane!
i can play it for like 40 seconds before my hand gets too tired. people really dont understand the endurance you need to possibly be able to play this song
plus the 'mental RAM' needed to SING on top of it all...
@@rtyuik7 after two years, I can finally play the song, thanks for reminding me of this comment. Progress is wild!
3:05 I find it impressive how you did that without a fretless six string. Awesome!
The talent it takes to nail this and sing at the same time... my gosh, Señor Claypool is a bass god
hmm probably not the first slap bass song to learn. very well done.
You need a camera with higher fps, or you need to upload in higher fps, so we can speed it down in the youtube player and still see what you're doing xD
Fragwar | Graphics Desginer I need a camera ;/
+CoverSolutions are you just using a phone?
He used to rec with a phone, but now he have a 60fps camera
+Fragwar Can't you slow it down under the Settings wheel? Great job, +Coversolutions!
Yeah it needs to 1000fps so we can slow it down by 100%
For the record, I nailed the tabs that only had the rectangles.
Like butter dripping from a hot biscuit. Nice job man - Les would be proud!
I love this guy. He got the level to play some prog-funk-avant-garde shit, but take some time to teach us Another One Bite The Dust on E string. Unbelievable.
Now try it whilst singing on a fretless 6 string bass... Great cover though!
Singing over it isn’t that hard when you get used to the bassline.
Also Les plays this on a four string most of the time, the exception being the studio version.
Me: I bet I can play this
Also me: see’s this guy
Me again: cries in 0-3-5
Lol smoke on the water reference? Haha
and to think he sings while doing this? absolutely insane.
I've been a bassist for many years, my variety is very wide with my bass playing and I have played some of the hardest bass lines ever created by many amazing musicians.
.. This is still the hardest damn fucking song I've ever learned.
I love to play this song as warm-up before playing such complex things like Another Bites The Dust or Lounge Act.
I can play this from 1:36 to 1:57

@@Charlie-vq5xy you're not funny either, therefore I didn't laugh.
now available on rocksmith
I'm trying to listen at 0.5x speed to figure it out but I can't stop laughing at the vocals please help.
"I remember this like it was a meme ago"
I don't get it
FunkyRedCat i always hear "Well I remember this dog gone meal ago"
"Tommy the cat is a realdowkgnfnekwndndndndnfkgkgkhoqpwpwmfmvvmgmeemfkvkvmdmcmvvmfmmrdksmachinemakfkvkfnensjcncngngnekdkfke but it was a rare occasion such as this, that he did"
dude can u slow that down for me? i can,t read that fast. lol
Temos um br aqui? Legal
listen at 0.75 speed for a funky groove ;)
Billdinho I kinda prefer that to the original tbh 😂
not a bad speed but i prefer 1.25
commerceserver I always wonder if it’s humanly possible to play at that speed
Matthew Bermingham id doubt it
Deccers damn
I'm not really sure what you're doing with your hands right now but I like it
I hadn't picked up my bass in 3 years before getting into Primus. Stoked to say that after seeing this cover 10 weeks ago I can finally hit it at full speed. Phenomenal cover and really appreciate the editing in of the tabs.
good job, how is your thumb not in immense pain?
GregCerresin _1 it was
+CoverSolutions lol
mokodo _ if anything this song fucking kills your left hand. it's got a lot of reaches and really fast repetitive movements. makes your joints sore as all shit. after you play slap for a while you lose most of the feeling in your thumb anyways.
It's my popping finger that gets destroyed when trying to play this song, on top of my left hand cramping up.
You’ve introduced me to Primus. Thank you so much.
Dude seriously. You're certainly the best bass cover channel on UA-cam BY FAR. Unreal. I think I'm in love with you lol.
After finishing "No One Knows" and "I Got Id", I decided to go through your catalog to see some of the things I haven't done yet. As soon as I saw the first few measures, I knew I'd only be listening to this one, not playing, haha
Eres un gran bajista. Seguro te lo han dicho antes pero solo queria detenerme para decirtelo personslmente. Mis respetos y admiracion! Saludos de Peru!!
this is by far my favourite Primus song. as for playing it...it's frustrating at first but once you figure out that main groove, it's so much fun
I've been stuck on this song for a while, and this video really helped me NAIL the part from 0:32 to 0:56 :D
Me too
Haha, right. Those parts can't be played as written! Dotted half rests..? 🙂
This song makes me want to start playing bass
This song will also probably make me quit playing bass
My thoughts exactly
What's funny is I learned to play this song and once I did I got bored and stopped playing for a few years, I'm just now relearning it
@@ryanmccauley3926 it took me 3 whole years to learn the main riff…
@@cyloops64 first time I learned it probably took the same amount of time for me and I learned it wrong, this time it was like a month and I had it down consistently the right way
@@cyloops64 I think I hit a plateau on bass after I learned it the first time and spent like 6 years almost exclusively learning the hardest shit I could manage on guitar and it boosted my speed/accuracy and thanks to my emphasis on chicken pickin with guitar it helped me transition back and relearn this absolute headache in no time at all
That dead note in front of the fourth is so important. A lot of people teaching this song 2 hits on the 4 instead of a mute and it really makes a difference. That little note finally enabled me to play this thank you 👏🏼
this is the perfect beginner bass song
Play along tabs.
Oh aren't you a joker.
I can make every Pause perfect, no Problem... with just "playing" these Sections
In high school I stayed at my grandmas house for a week with my bass and my phone and I remember learning this song. good times
Excellent!! Very accurate & great tone!!

Very skilled player, best cover I have yet seen. Great job!
That slide right before the vocals. I can never nail it.
3:05 on at half speed sounds insane, especially once the drums and shit come back
Flawless Victory.
I can hardly comprehend the skill it takes to play like this. Muscle memory really is amazing.
I really think your videos are neat and the way you control those strings just makes me glad to be alive? good job
much respect to you, you're amazing! Seeing this makes me appreciate Primus so much more too, they really do suck
Love the "PLAY ALONG TABS" at 3:05 hahahaha
Impeccable playing my man! Thanks for the tutorial!
Really good cover in all. This video is how I learnt how to play this song, and it's very faithful to the original, even if it's on a 4 string rather than the original recording using 6 (or 5 I can't remember). The only gripe I have is that at 3:13 it would sound closer to the original if you played it where it's supposed to be on the 5 string, but just without the low B string. When I played this version on my bass side by side with the original, it caught me off guard how low the original was compared to what I was playing, and I searched around the fretboard trying to find the right spot before I finally realized I needed a low B string to play it properly. Everything else in this tab is great. Keep doing good!
Higher Ground - RHCP pls man
Awesome man, one of my favorite songs and band, you nailed it my friend, great job again!!!
SO fun to watch. Amazing job and accuracy.
You have skills, great skills. Thank You for this Primus cover.
PS: Primus - John the fisherman, please
Impressive !!! Thks !!
You have the best covers of Primus I've seen, and I saw them live last month! XD
That is the most mastermind, genius, badass bass line I have ever seen😯😯😯
Impressive! I woulda already lost 3 fingers 30 seconds in!
The air was thick with cat calls (no pun intended)
killer skills dude watch about 19 of your videos and I've got to say as long as I've been around music that a some out of this world skills
so tight man
well done!
I can't imagine the methodology behind learning this, but what i'm really struggling with, is figuring out how Les came up with this.
Nice profile picture
I finally managed to learn this damn song.
This is the Lord's work, thanks for posting
The tone is awesome.
Can you play Those Damned Blue Collared Tweakers by Primus?
I've been playing lead guitar for nigh on 30 years, and Les has always been one of my idols... I feel for your fingers fella. Good stuff. Pro in the making. :)
After watching this, I but my bass down and bowed to my tablet. I've found my new bass tutor! Excellent playing and good audio/video quality. Thank you so much dude!
Men, i just was watching some Primus videos to start gettin in the right mood because i just buy my tickets to go se them with Tool in March here in México, you're video just wildly appears in the suggestions and what a great surprise to see someone can play like that, congrats!!!.
