Comfrey Uses & Comfrey Poultice Demonstration

- Comfrey has been used as a medicinal herb for over 2,000 years. Commonly known as knitbone, Comfrey has powerful wound - healing properties.
Comfrey is a fast-growing plant, and produces large amounts of leaf during the growing season.
Both the leaves and root can be used externally, most commonly in the form of a poultice.
The main healing element in Comfrey is the small organic molecule Allantoin which greatly speeds up tissue growth. It is know as one of the best cell proliferants in the herb kingdom. It has been used to heal cuts, abrasions, burns, ulcerations, bruises, and many other skin, muscle, ligament and bone conditions.
The high mucilage content of Comfrey, moisturizes and soothes the skin, while the allantoin helps regeneration.

When I was a kindergartner I was diagnosed with legg-calve-perthes disease. I had 3 surgeries in total and went from bedridden, to wheelchair bound, and finally to a walker. The whole process was probably one years time before I could walk on my own agin. My mom planted comfrey in the backyard and I have fond memories of her applying these leaves to my leg every night. I wouldn’t say that this plant alone did the trick but I ended up being my surgeons most successful recovery
Good story
So many critics for such an informative video. Thank you for the demonstration.
I'm a retired nurse. When applying an ace bandage, you should start at the wrist and wrap toward the heart.
Thank you 😊
RN here, as well. And if this ACE was being used for swelling, you would be correct, you would wrap towards the heart. However, in this instance, she is simply using the bandage to secure the poultice, not to compress. And in this scenario, if there was slight compression as she applied, it wouldn’t matter anyway, because the goal is not to move fluid with compression.
My shoulder has been sore and radiating sharp, stabbing pain from my neck to my elbow. Scale of pain: 10. Wore a comfrey poultice and pain was reduced by 97 %.
Just like that I never new this thanks very much for teaching us God bless you
It's the best herb I have a cream and I also chop and drop in my garden, also chop and put in a bin of water leave to rot for several weeks or months add some to a watering can add more water and water your veggies and flowers it's a great tonic
The Saran or glad wrap also holds heat in which promotes circulation. Every step really does have a purpose.
I use it all the time! 77 yrs old no side effects. I dry it and make it into powder form. A 1/2 to a teaspoon goes a long way!

Look up the history of the Pharmacartels and what happened to all the holistic medical colleges. We used to have them across the country.

I had a friend that broke his lower leg... don't recall if it was both bones or one... he had the leg securely splinted instead of cast and then was able to apply poultice. Many breaks will do just fine with a splint instead of a cast.... Better to macerate in a mortar and pestle intend of a plastic bag.. bags have chemicals.
exactly
MEH so does the air...dont put gas in your car......the amount is not enough to not use the bag or plastic when rushing to heal a wound.
Don't breathe. The air has chemicals.
amazing! I think we have a local plant in our country that could be use the same with comfrey.
I had a very bad open ankle fracture with the foot twisted 90• to the right and the tibia bone sticking out the side. This was six weeks ago. Just had the cast taken off in the hospital today. Can weight bare a bit now on the ankle. Considering using comfrey for maximum healing now.
How's your ankle? I hope it's healed, or close to healing. Did you try comfrey?
That must have been horrific! I just snapped my fibula 2 days ago when I fell off my deck and it was painful enough. Came here looking for comfort. Hope you're doing well.
This was excellent!
You are living in a God beautiful country , where is this beautiful country at in Australia ?
Excellent information and resource!
Would this help put knee cap back in place of its not in the right place?
Just a thought but it might be an idea to lay glad wrap in small pieces in "shingles" just so it doesn't restrict the area especially if there is any concern about swelling
That's not a bad idea at all. Can't say I've seen it done before.
We have not had any experience in using comfrey poultices internally. Really not sure about that one? I do know people who eat comfrey, and believe it has internal benefits.
However, Comfrey for internal use was prohibited in Australia by legislation in 1984. The reasons behind that are debatable. But just saying FYI. More info here: goo.gl/VFHXMx
***** Well... we haven't had experience doing that. But you could always try. I don't think it would hurt. And do let us know how it goes, if you do try it.

Was this ever tested on someone with a hernia? It sounds like something that could heal a hernia.
+David Frye It will not heal a hernia.
It will heal anything that can naturally heal itself though. And better if you really, really believe.
Growth hormone and nandrolone deconate or deca-durabolin are the only two hormones that will make you heal. These are what athletes use for injuries because they strengthen immune system, increase circulation greatly to tendons, ligaments, and force healing.
Theirs a sight who said this will heal a hernia. Will it do you know anyone repairing hernia with this

Because THEY want your money.
Question for any professional who know why they banned comfrey and arnica telling people it's carcinogenic and cause serious problems and death!!!!
My guess is because they know how incredibly healing they are and that they have many uses. People should have the freedom to use what they want, period.

Give it a try. Make a decoction of it. Mix it with sea moss, bladderwrack, elderberry flowers, olive oil and some glycerin.
my comfrey is about 3 feet tall, and i am concerned about cutting it to the ground in fear that it may stress the plant or shorting its life . should i be concerned or not ?
Comfrey is a very hardy plant and has a large root system. Cutting it to the ground shouldn't damage it too much. It will just sprout up again.
My Mum not only cut it to the ground she dug it up. It grew back. I saw elsewhere the people harvest it three times per growing season to use the leaves as mulch elsewhere. You cutting it back will be fine.

Hi, I wonder how experienced you are at using comfrey? You say to leave it on over night. But for how long can you repeat this treatment. What is the longest period you have used it for? Do you use it every night until you are healed? I think it is powerful and I'm wary of it's potential toxicity to the liver. After just a few days using it I have little red welts appearing.

June Wheeler Yes, you can grow it in zones as low as zone 5. I am in Wisconsin and it grows beautifully. It goes dormant for the winter months and thrives during our growing season. I am never without Comfrey, even during our long Winters. I freeze Comfrey poultice in small portions, to use when needed. www.larksperennials.com Eastward Missionary College has done a fine job at showing you how to make a Comfrey poultice without a blender or food processor. A processor does make the job a lot easier and smoother on the skin.
How often should this be used to heal? Can it be toxic if it is used too often?
Externally, you could probably use it often with no side-effects. Like anything though, it could be overdone. Just observe how your skin handles it, and stop if you react negatively.
