- Morag Gamble shares her love of Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) - a perennial multi-functional plant that is so valuable in her permaculture system.
Morag introduces some of the many uses of comfrey and demonstrates how to simply divide a comfrey plant to have many cuttings to add to your garden, or share with your friends.
In her own garden, Morag uses comfrey as an edge plant, to stabilise gardens, to activate compost, to add nutrients when making a no-dig garden, to make a simple natural fertiliser, and to self-mulch and feed a fruit tree.

ashy slashy fungal problems with your feet come from your gut! Candida or too much sugar in your diet causes what we call athletes foot. Got b-all to do with going barefoot

Comfrey saved my very burnt hand Dr's wanted to do a skin graft but i used comfrey instead for two weeks you wouldn't even know i had my hand caught in a dry cleaning press

What are you trying to say? Doctors should switch to comfrey for severe burn victims too instead of scientifically proven treatments like skin grafting?

Yes, doctors should def incorporate comfrey into burn solutions.

A border is such a great idea! I've been placing them for mulching and to hold back grasses from my fruit trees, but placing them along pathway and driveway edges is going to help so much!

Oh Morag, thank you so much for making this video about how to regrow comfrey- this is valuable information and I will take your advice and use it with my own comfrey plants. You were right about comfrey growing back and being a hardy plant- it did grow back in my garden, I was so happy to see new leaves shooting through the mulch. I live in Gippsland Victoria.

I've also propagated comfrey with about a 90% success rate from flower stem cuttings! Each piece about 2 inches, planted vertically with the "up" end "up", half in and half out of the soil.
I like doing this during bolting season, because I'm hacking back the flower stalks anyway. 😊

Another great video, thank you. I have planted comfrey around all of my fruit trees here in NZ and have had great success simply dividing the plants as you have shown. I've now got masses of it from just one little plant bought about 2 months ago! It's so useful yet never seems to become a nuisance.

Hey David, do you have comfrey now? I live in Austin too and have just found out about comfrey in my healing research.
Love all your videos...I place armloads of leaves between rows to keep down weeds and get the deep minerals you mentioned into the soil as it decays and dries...but one can easily get a comfrey farm as you can never dig it up entirely and move it.... One grower told me the roots can go down 30 feet so make sure you plant it only where you're sure you want it forever.....it is an amazing healing plant as allantoin makes skin cells regenerate FAST. in poultises and salves as you mentioned.

Entertaining and informative video. Thanks. I grow comfrey and I'm impressed both by its prolific production and the amount of (laboratory analyzed) nutrients deliver in the foliage. However, I'm not convinced that making and applying comfrey tea adds anything of value to my garden. But the extra effort does no harm. I get at least five "crops" a year to add as a mulch and addition to my compost. That's the bit value to me as comfrey seems to be quite prolific in my semi-desert type of soil. I ordered seeds from Ireland, and have it planted in zone 6b. I see 3 small leaves forming. I hope it grows well.....
Thank you so much. I have several five foot tall comfrey mounds. Twice each summer it grows so high that the wind blows it out in a circle. I cut it at the ground level and within a week it starts over. I have given lots of it to friend but have never really understood how to handle it. Last year I kept it up with stakes and rope but felt that was no solution to keeping it safe till I could figure out what to do with it. I've known for decades how wonderful it could be but just didn't know what to do. [always have too many projects going on]. I heard it made good compost, I've known for decades that it made a good salve [which is why I was so glad to receive some from a friend so many years ago]. I love to look at the healthy leaves and flowers. Somewhere I read that it was toxic to eat or drink so I settled for just enjoying how it looked and grew. I'm am so thrilled to find your video. I will follow you directions and search for more of your videos. THANK YOU SO MUCH. And I too am amazed at your bare feet. How brave you are. I have chickens and although I clean up after them CONSTANTLY, I still would not be brave enough to walk barefoot. I have a jungle of weeds that I am sure could be useful and delicious but have yet to learn them all. I will watch all of your videos.

Wow , digging the garden in your bare feet.
Some years ago I foolishly decided to try skipping again (as an unfit octogenarian) and I tore a chunk out of my Achilles tendon. Six months later my doctor finally sent me to a physiotherapist who was amazed that the tear disappeared within two weeks using Comfrey and olive oil as a salve twice a day. I'm sold!
You can also take one of the longer roots and cut it into several pieces. Each piece will likely sprout and become a new plant.
I've used comfrey tea for years. I also chop and drop it as mulch. I use Russian Bocking 14 with an NPK of 1.8-0.5-7.0. I brew it in a 32 gallon black garbage can. Let it sit for 3 months to a year. I don't strain it, I just take the sprinkler off the can so I don't clog up the cans. I also use fermented plant juice made from comfrey which I foliar spray. I use only 1/4 teaspoon for 5 gallons. It's very powerful stuff. I also make lacto microorganisms which is also fermented. I combine it with the fermented plant juice and spray it every two weeks. It works pretty well. The only other addition I use for supplemental fertilization is some fast acting bone meal . I will use it when I start to see flowers forming on my tomatoes and peppers. Love it! Blessings to you. I’ve got three comfrey just over a year, thinking it’s time to split up! 2 will keep multiplying along sq acre fence line as ALL NEIGHBORS USE ROUND UP 😢 and 1 much happier plant smack dab in the middle of our orchard surrounded by vetiver perennial peanuts 34 fruit trees hope 1 comfrey will make it to each! ❤❤❤

Si have been eating the leafs for years! I also dry it and make it into a powder and use it in soups and stew all winter!
So do I. I dry the leaves and powder them. It adds a nice chlorophyll and protein supplement to my breads.
My chickens eat it by the pound.

Morag you amaze me with how you use forks and shovels bare-foot. I can't even dig my ground with shoes as it's compacted. But I do love walking on grass barefoot. I think our feet become over sensitive wearing shoes and socks.
