Accessibility is all the rage these days, and that's a good thing. Well, unless you're a gatekeeping elitist, in which case you're feeling a different kind of rage.
Let's have a chat about how accessibility is good for everyone, and why a game like Final Fantasy XVI enforcing "gamer pride" is a little bit silly.

I'm reminded of a time a few years ago when my brother broke his hand.
As you can imagine, that alone killed a *lot* of his games.
We did find one game that was almost perfect, except we needed to somehow assign a shortcut to a mouse key. A function I figured existed, and was just buried. But no, turned out what I was suggesting-- a function which could be accomplished by one frigging finger on the keyboard-- would've "destroyed the balancing."

One of my favorite accessibility options I’ve ever seen was in Dead Cells. There are points in the game where it flashes a bright light on the screen. As someone with sensitive eyes, I learned to instinctively close my eyes at those points. Later, while digging in the menus, I found this option to disable those flashes. It was such a simple thing, but it made my experience so much better.

Dead Cells is incredible in terms of accessibility - in spite of being designed as a hard game, they added so many options to adjust difficulty and potential straining issues via Assist Mode (on top of already present accessibility settings) to let as many people experience the entire game as possible. It really helped me ease in after a few years of bouncing in and back - I always struggled with platforming elements in games and it's not made easier over time even as I get better in games by my joints and nerves in hands getting screwed up with working with computers and being a PC gamer for 20+ years (and some of my other hobbies over the years including wrist strain too lol). I hella love Dead Cells. I'll honestly buy anything Motion Twin does just to keep supporting them.

In some ways I feel like it may be more *because* it's designed as hard, because what counts as hard is different for everyone. Having those options means players can fine-tune the difficulty so it's hard but fair by *their* standards, whether or not their sense of hard matches the developers'. Because the appeal is in achieving an achievable challenge, and if that difficulty slider is in the wrong spot, you lose either "achievable" or "challenge".

Something I heard at a UX lecture once that absolutely changed my perspective on accessibility. It was something like:
"even able bodied people like me are all on a sliding scale of ability in our day to day lives. You might be able-bodied but multitasking and not able to use all you mental and physical facilities on a task, you might be being distracted from a task by something, you might be in a dark room and not able to see what you're doing fully, and in context of gaming, you might have terrible old hardware that limits your ability to see the full contrast of the image, or have huge input latency preventing you reacting quickly". Regular gamers can only benefit from having accessibility options.

At the time, I’d resigned myself that the hobby I’d had for so long was something I’d no longer able to enjoy. My partner would play the latest games for me, but it just wasn’t the same. However with the announcement prior to the launch of The Last Of Us 2’s accessibility settings, I was pretty emotional and hopeful that these settings could be implemented across more games and since then, I’ve been able to finish both last of us games, God Of War Ragnarok and As Dusk Falls with no sighted assistance. I used to play games on the hardest mode and nothing ever bothered me. Now I get motion sickness or vertigo very easily. I'm insanely photosensitive and flashing lights have the dual effect of pissing me off and causing a migraine that can last days. My hand-eye coordination is not top notch anymore, and my brain fog days (where cognitive function is not where it should be) prevents me from noticing details I once would've, reacting to things as quickly as I should or following through with a plan. All of these things have made me completely quit playing multiplayer with strangers as I have no idea how good I can git on any given day. I never thought any of these things would happen to me. Now I am VERY thankful when I can do things like turn off head bob, toggle off flashing lights and play easy modes now and again.

That and other recent precedents have me wondering how much nuance was lost in translation in that interview. If these accessibility rings do take up normal ring slots (which they may not, though I can't find mych info either way) then that's an issue, but a few of them seem to cover the same things in different ways (there's both an auto-dodge ring and a ring to make manually dodging easier, and the former may make auto-healing redundant if used) and we don't even know how important ring slots actually are which may end up mitigating (tho not eliminating) that issue. Also, I really feel like Yoshi-P was trying to say "I want to offer these in a way that doesn't make people feel bad about using them" more than anything, and I think that is actually a good goal to have even if the results in this case aren't very good at all. Like, the same technology that enables putting accessibility options into your game *also* enables putting challenge options into it, too. In fact, when people do challenge runs, you'll often see them make other parts of the game easier, either to make the run more interesting/fun for the runner or their audience, or in an attempt to balance out the gameplay somehow. It’s apparently not uncommon. Just like someone with color blindness I didn’t know I was experiencing the world in a different way from everyone else, I am considered “high-functioning” and I’d built up tools that let me navigate the world “normally.” Then when things shut down, the lack of use of those social “tools” led to their atrophy. When I went back out into the world it was overwhelming. I still struggle a little bit with this foolish sense of shame, that there’s something “wrong” with me, or I’m a burden. Even though my friends could tell something was bothering me I was afraid that being open about it would change how people thought of me or treated me.
It’s taken me about 2 years to get to the point of acceptance or at least making peace with it, and literally everyone in my life cared far less about it than I thought they would. And now, if I’m having an off day and just need my space, or if I just don’t have the energy to go do something on the weekend after a long week, I’m able to just explain this and people understand. I think really I was more afraid of what people would think about me if they knew than I was concerned about the diagnosis itself. The human brain is a truly weird thing.

For the very same reasons, I intentionally got Twilight Princess for the Game Cube despite owning a Wii, and never even attempted to play Skyward Sword because I know it would be frustrating to play with my dominant hand. The cherry on top of the Zelda issue, is that Link was left handed in all of the Zelda games prior to this (and even still left handed in Twilight Princess for the Game Cube as they had to flip the entire game around so right handed players wouldn't have the issue left handed player got instead).

For accessibility - they do have options, like calling in aid or using spells that stun, or track. Elden Ring added more save points too. Lean into that approach more, like Elden Ring did. I don't think a difficulty slider should be added to games where the hallmark is difficulty. Pokémon isn't known for difficulty and it's not a core part of what makes the game fun.

You won't hear the counter argument, but I'll give it anyway:
I need games with a singular difficulty setting like the Souls games or Sekiro or Hollow Knight because otherwise I will ruin the challenge for myself. I'm unable to control it, either. I can't force myself to only play the highest or intended difficulty when the game bumps me into easy mode, I'm just not wired that way. There are so many other games out there that cater to a variety of tastes. If the games with a singular difficulty start to offer an 'easy mode', then there's no games left that cater to me and my weirdo tastes. Those are already the only ones. And I don't really care if it involves modding since that's not something I even engage with.
I only came to that realizating with Elden Ring, really, since it made it way too easy to sidestep the difficulty of every encounter and cheese your way through it. And as such I wasn't forced into that deeply satisfying feeling that Sekiro gave me when I slashed my way through NG+.

As an aging "gamer" I appreciate it when companies put in the most basic accessibility things like increasing font sizes, subtitles with neat little tweaks, audio tweaks, toggling buttons rather than mashing, etc.. When I was playing a Fire Emblem on the Switch a couple years ago (Three Houses, I think), the font was so ridiculously small that it strained the eyes. There was no way to increase it. My eyes are aging. My next set of glasses are 100% going to have bifocals. Yay. My hearing is also declining, so I like it when visual cues are an option. These things aren't present to make games "easier." And when my reflexes and nervous system start to shit the bed, I will take advantage of accessibility options that help with that. Companies that won't put that stuff in their games because they (don't want to cater to the disabled) only want to make "hardcore" gameplay are going to find their fanbase shrinking and dwindling as those gamers age up (or have other things happen to them). I mean, I had a friend who had several complications from diabetes hit him hard in just a few years and he went from loving video games to not being able to play them at all because his vision was going and his hand-eye coordination was shot. Life happens. It takes zero effort to be kinder to each other and your audience.

Honestly, the whole "playing around pride" thing is a genuine issue in game development, even outside inclusivity. You have to be very careful about how you offer aid to a struggling player, because they don't react to even the kindest of prompts in the way you'd necessarily expect.
For instance, statistics show that for a LOT of the average playerbase of a game... the threshold where their pride will allow them to willingly lower the difficulty setting of a game is actually significantly lower than the threshold where they'll just say "screw this!" and drop the game altogether.
Likewise, those prompts after a few lost bosses that ask if you want to bump the difficulty down this time... even when I can intellectually appreciate the intention behind it... yeah, in the heat of the moment, after death number six, it kind of just makes me want to chuck my controller at the screen. Like a dad on a road trip insisting he isn't lost.

Like thats a thing i think people dont realize about difficulty settings in modern games: you can turn them on and off as needed.

But I would also sometimes just like to get a "get all achievements" button because then I can play the game with mods, or don't have to worry about forgetting to do a certain choice that was 45 minutes of gameplay and 15 minutes of unskippable cutscenes ago. The achievements are meaningless, even to me to a degree, I just like having them because it calms my chaotic brain to see that 100% bar so I can now game the way I want to. I do not, simply cannot understand how making games more accessible is somehow a problem. The bastards are already getting more and more prohibitively expensive with today's economy making it so that 70-120 dollar or euro or pounds require several months of saving up.
