I don't understand why it's not 10. I think the original excuse was that they couldn't get it to fit, which makes no sense.

I still remember the whole "we can only do 8 shots per pack because of the battery included with every film pack." So when they announced the i-Type film and these new cameras, I fully expected we would finally get the 10 shots... and it never happened.
The battery included with these film packs is precisely the same size as the ones included with the original Polaroid film, pre 2008. They can't put 10 shots per pack because their film is both too thick and because they are cheapasses and doing so increases their profit margins - both direct causes for their discontinuation of spectra.
@@darthnick96 The battery is actually more flat than the OG Polaroid batteries. I have stuffed 10 shots into a modern pack of 600 film along with a dark slide and it worked flawlessly. They are just feeding us BS.
Awesome video and thanks for the shoutout my dude! I agree about a lot of points here. There is this difficult line between gratitude that Polaroid still exists and the desire for them to improve on various fronts, knowing full well it is all so precarious. Prices/shots per pack are for sure my #1 issues. The workforce and machinery shortages at Polaroid are obviously a critical element here. If they had the resources of Fuji, one would think this would all be a non-issue, but they're essentially a small-to-medium sized business exporting on an international scale with machines that could drop dead at a moment's notice. As for the current chemistry, I'm happy with how far they've come and while there is a stark difference between Polaroid/Fuji film, what you can get out of an SX-70 is still fairly unmatched. That is, of course, because there are no Instax SLRs, so Polaroid still has them beat possibly until the end of time in the hardware side of things. Would love to see Polaroid get so yoked that a cease fire with Fuji would be necessary, possibly spawning Fuji x Polaroid film for Polaroid cameras, but that's a pipe dream.
Ya it's kind of like balancing loving that I can shoot them, but also having appropriate expectations for what's possible too. Glad to hear the new stuff is looking good, I can't wait until eventually it cycles through and I start to see some of the new stuff on shelves here in Canada...someday

I'd rather spend that money on a 36 exposure roll of 35mm film. Even factoring in cost of commercial processing, the cost per shot of Polaroid/instant film is just too expensive to justify for me. If I want instant results, I use my digital camera. Therein lies the downfall of the Polaroid/'instant photography' concept for me. The only place I can see for 'instant film photography' for me is to be able to hand out hardcopy photos in social situations.

That's not gonna happen.
The last peel-apart production machines were owned by Fuji. And they have pretty much scrapped them all or changed them to Instax production. Florian Kaps tried to talk to Fuji in Japan to sell him the machines, but they didn't want to. And before anyone mentions it: It takes a shitton of time and money to design a new machine, test it and build it. That's not gonna happen. And if it would happen, many people would rant about too high prices or bad quality lol
On the other hand: We have One Instant, which is produced by Vienna based Supersense, which is managed by Florian Kaps, the guy who built up The Impossible Project. It's one film per cassette, completely made by hand and the package is recycable. It costs around 9€ per shot, but it's the only way to shoot freshly-produced peel-apart film. But since it's still a small production and they just started last summer, it doesn't come near the quality of FP100-C at all. But it has it's own charme and they're working hard on improving. I got to see some tests and the manufactory last summer in Vienna and they indeed are pouring a lot of time and heart into this project and have many ideas to improve price, workflow and quality.
Fuji peel apart was such a nice film. I still have quite a few packs in the refrigerator, I better start working my way through he color film soon.
I feel your anger with Spectras discontinuation. And so did Polaroid Originals when I wrote them three nasty messages about it.
Did you also research on why it was discontinued while you were writing nasty messages?

Polaroid Originals (Impossible Project) also did try to get Spectra working, but couldn't, hence their discontinuation of Spectra. I really don't see much reason they can't just have an "original Polaroid" line of film for Spectra, which is the same thing being shot in modern i-type cameras but sized to fit the Spectra. I also mention that I would like to see multiple lines of Polaroid film, much like we have different lines of 35mm film which each are different formulations designed for different types of photography.
I just want them to kill off the Polaroid branded TVs and other non photography related stuff. I mean, these things helped to kill the original Polaroid.

That is a good one as well, though I don't think Polavision really caught on that well the first time. Also, film cinematography is a completely different beast altogether, so that one may still be relegated to fan projects.
I hope that after the merger they were able to get some of that documentation for original products. Yea, i'm talking peel-apart pack film.
I don't know how it looks in the rest of the world, but since the first rebranding, price here in Poland went down by like 15-20%.
Its still pretty expensive, but its not an insignificant price cut.

Fuji said that they dont have any plans for bringing it back, but I never heard polaroid saying that, they just stopped making it some years ago. So my original comment expressed hope, that since they now may own ip for manufacturing pack film, they may also consider bringing it back. Integral film, instax, Kodak lawsuit and so on are completly different stories.

@@bthemedia They have stated numerous times in official press releases that they are not (and will not ever be) working on Packfilm as they do not possess the complex machinery needed to produce it on an industrial scale. The only reason integral film was eve feasible for the then-Impossible Project was acquisition of the original Polaroid corporation production machinery. As much as I would love packfilm to come back, the new Polaroid company isn't who you should turn to for that. Supoort One Instant (before they run out of P7 material :/ ).
If only Polaroid Spectra film survived into the Polaroid rebrand.

LOVED the video! I agree with you; Polaroid's been focusing on the casual market I think. I'm a bit afraid because it almost seems like they don't care about having good chemistry and the old cameras anymore, for example, I haven't ever seen a Polaroid Originals special edition SX-70 film, but Impossible used to do those all the time. I think the old management wouldn't have discontinued Spectra film either. Hopefully though we'll see new chemistry and film varieties and Polaroid will make packfilm again, and 500 film, and Polavision film, and instant 35mm film, and rollfilm, and i-Zone film (or i-Zone disposables), and type 80 film, and 20x24 film, and type 50 film, and... oh. Sorry. Got carried away.
Spectra camera is the best camera of all the polaroid line. Simple, sad to see it go.
I agree with upgrading the chemistry, although I must say, I don’t want it to be like Fuji’s instax...I love that vintage look of polaroids.
And don’t even get me started on Spectra 🤦🏻♂️
They improve and test the chemistry with every new batch, which is like every few months.
I jumped on the Impossible Project and Polaroid Originals bandwagon to help maintain Market Competition, but I still buy and shoot Instax because of what you said. My One Step 2, sits on my shelf right next to my Land Camera.
I'm angry that they have discontinued spectra film too....

I completely agree with you on the subject of innovation. I think the worst thing that could happen right now is if the management at the Impossible Group/Polaroid rests on their laurels, consolidates their product line, and simply uses the Polaroid name brand as a means to derive sales, rather than deriving sales from a quality product and continual innovation.
I am sure I am not the only current user that would stop supporting them if they stop innovating, part of the reason for buying films that are imperfect is the presumption that part of the revenue is being directed towards R&D.
Now in terms of a more realistic (no offense) set of demands here is what I want, I believe most people want, and I believe the company can achieve:
-The opacification layer needs to get fixed. One needs to be able to shoot without a frog-tongue on an SX-70, because they are problematic and a hassle to set up. Frankly, they also ruin the lines of such a camera.
-10 shots to a pack. I believe this is easily doable. I have never believed the official reasoning from Impossible/Polaroid that the film is thicker now, thus only 8 shots. If you measure the pod size on new film and compare it to old, you will find the two identical, thus there can be no greater volume capacity for reagent, and thus the film cannot be thicker before it passes through the rollers. Furthermore, if you read about the issues old Polaroid had with the introduction of type 38 Polacolor film, you will see why the thicker film explanation makes no sense. The real issue is the battery, its much larger than the original and keeps the film pressure plate from collapsing fully, hence 8 shots to a pack. With small cell lithium technology, it should be easily possible to achieve 10 shots.
-The cost with ten shots should be below $25. Polaroid film was never inexpensive to begin with, when SX-70 film first appeared, it retailed for $6.90 in 1972. Depending on what inflation scale you use, that amounts to about $42 today. So realistically, I am willing to pay a bit more for 10 shots. I realize that everyone wants something as inexpensively as possible, and to have 10 shot packs of Polaroid film for less than $20 would be great, but realistically, I don't think it leaves a sufficient margin of profitability for the company.
-Time-Zero type development. I think myself and a lot of other people want this. I am not going to talk about artistic aspects or similar as that is a whole can of worms in of itself, but the development time needs to be shortened. If we can get color development to sub-5 min. that would be optimal.
Now, I myself am conflicted on the subject of Spectra film. I was never much of a Spectra shooter when the film was available either from the old Polaroid or new. I can see why people would not want another format to die, but I also see how it is a problematic manufacturing situation for Impossible/Polaroid. Has anyone done any investigation to see if the stated claim that Spectra cameras are unreliable is true, or is this simply an excuse to discontinue production?

I really miss using my Spectra cameras. When I started promoting film photography on twitter I had a lot of conflict with Impossible. I believe the purpose of the rebrand was to erase that period of their history and hopefully move towards a sustainable mass market but who knows. #BelieveInFilm

Spectra cameras are the most faulty ones. That's the main reason why it's discontinued. PO did a lot of testing with Spectra cameras: They changed voltage of the batteries, the chemistry to make the film thinner and even the film cassette to support those weak motors. You rather discontinue the film instead of giving free film compensation to so many people with bad cameras and getting shitted on by to people who just don't understand that there cameras are junk: weak motors, bad and old electronics.
@@MineCedi Spectras are great cameras. The reason for all of the failure is quite obviously the thickness of the film. I have seen studies done with a micrometer showing the modern Spectra film is almost 2.5 times as thick as the original Polaroid stuff from pre-2008.
The considerate thing to do would have been issuing a warning that some cameras (often those which were used more and have weaker motors as a result) are unable to handle Polaroid's new, thicker film and that it is to be purchased at the buyers own risk, and releasing smaller, more limited batches of the film every 6 or so months (frankly the way they have been doing it the past 3-4 years - I often ordered my Spectra 4 to 5 months in advance from my local camera shop), so that way they could keep their dedicated customers happy while still focusing on 600 and iType, which admittedly is a much larger market share. Instead, they elected to take the course which they did, which sadly is unsurprising given the way the company has been run since Oskar took over. I have been shooting since the PX film days and this struck a huge blow to my faith in the company. When it becomes more about profits than keeping the customer satisfied, they begin going down the same route which killed Polaroid the first time back in the day.
Long answer but TLDR no, the Spectra cameras are not "more faulty" - the company is just unwilling to compromise and used the cameras as a scapegoat. I would be willing to bet quite a bit that these 20+ year old Spectras are faring much better than the OneStep2 and the Polaroid Now will in 20 years........
@@darthnick96 Long answer but TLDR: Congratulations on cherry picking. What has been discussed so often, also by me: Yes, the film is thicker than back then. And do you also want to know why or don't you even bother because you can't complain then? It is because the chemicals used back then are FORBIDDEN or not even AVAILABLE any more. The mixture is completely new and Polaroid still does experiment with new mixtures and using less chemistry to make the film thinner and more stable. What we got were spreading issues...
And I'm sorry to wake you up from dream land, but Polaroid made no money at all with Doc. They only lost. Doc is a great man, a visionary and I love him for doing what he is doing. But Polaroid wouldn't have survived without the focus on making more money and with the investments from Oskars father. That is the harsh truth. Dreams alone don't survive on the market and the money helped to push the film to the amazing quality it has nowadays and also brought us more variety that is able to not only survive as strictly limited editions but on a more longterm manner.
And film thickness doesn't completely fuck up a camera like many Spectras are. So you are basically talking about just that one issue: weak motors. Motors weaker than SX-70 or 600 ones, since many can easily handle the thicker film.
Not really a fan of how Polaroid reserves their more creative films such as the black frame or color wave to just their i-type cameras. Kinda annoying how they're doing this to coerce consumers into purchasing their new cameras instead of buying vintage cameras
I'm pretty sure the P.O. CEO actually went out on public and stated they have something for the Spectra being prepared in the pipeline. The impression is they wanted to introduce a new camera with the new spectra film at some point. It would make a ton of business sense too- every Instax wide sold is every sale that could have gone to Polaroid, which is already a tiny company in comparison. The timeline right now is probably all kinds of screwy though, what with the pandemic and potential supply issue looming on the horizon...

Honestly, before going to 35mm, I started with an old family Polaroid camera. But the price of the 8 shots was too much and the final results were unreliable. After I started 35mm many people asked me how was it shooting Polaroid, but I always tell them to not start and waist money, especially with the expensive new cameras and the films.
It's fun for a while, for a small memory but people who think that they will get into film photography by shooting just Polaroids don't get it.
Got to say, I fully agree. My camera is an original and it thinks there is 10 when there is 8. And it’s close to 20 dollars for 8 photos. It hurts. Ugh.
If you look closely in one of the early Mandalorian episodes, you will see that Kodak Super 8 camera redressed as a monocular viewer used by one of the characters.
Honestly the 8 shots a pack for like $22 and the cameras are kind of expensive now especially the ones being manufactured now is why I don’t get into Polaroid. I opted to Fuji for the price difference. Very good work Noah!

Wow when you brought up Spectra I actually laughed out loud... I agree with all of your points. Noah if you arent on them already, you should join us on the facebook groups (impossible project, polaroid image/spectra user, polaroid sx-70 camera group, etc), people frequently share from newer batches of film which is pretty cool. I just got some of the new 600 in the mail with a 2/20 production date so im pretty pumped about that!

I would love to have peel apart film that isn’t either a complete gamble, or cost €28 for three shots.
I’d also like it if I didn’t have to wait 10-15 minutes for the film to develop, it doesn’t feel very “instant”, especially not when the old Polaroid film would develop in about a minute.

We can put a helicopter on Mars, but we can't have a Polaroid film that's as good as what they made in 1972.
I have so much nostalgia for polaroid and love the cameras and the pictures I've taken with mine over the years, but its just so hard to rationalize shooting it instead of instax due to them having so much better chemistry and prices
I’ve got a One Step + and I’d recommend trying it out! It makes using a Polaroid socially wayyyy easier. And yes to bringing back I-zone!
Cool video. At 5:50 your new SX70 camera wish: seems you are describing what looks very similar to the Time Machine that Mint is building for their SLR670 cameras that can do both SX70 film as well as 600 film.
I do love my Polaroid cameras as well from my white rainbow stripe 1978 One Step to my 1987 Red 600. It was sad when they stopped making it, but remembering the days of The Impossible Project and waiting roughly 45 mins for one color picture drove me nuts! And to be honest it is a little crazy to wait still 18 mins for it to fully be developed, so I do hope that they improve their formula. As for Instax, I'm not really a fan, because you don't get much surface area. It's 6sq Inches vs 9 sq. Inches on a Polaroid if you do the math.

I think in the Polaroid fire sales of the 2000's, Fuji acquired some of the technology through purchases. I think that's why instax is so good.
I dunno I’m new to shooting Polaroid after wanting to since I first saw the commercial for I-zone when I was 8 (yeeeeeears ago). But after tonnes of research of Polaroid history, I feel like their focus on casual shooting is part of the bigger picture of growing Polaroid. They need the money to keep research and development on the forefront so they can eventually be in a way better financial place to confidently come out with stable hardware, including a spectra2.0. Im just grateful that they are still making cameras and film now that I’m able to start this as a hobby!
Agreed. It’s great IP rescued the last factory, did and do film for our old Polaroid cameras still around and went all the way culminating with this new Polaroid brand. Kudos to them. I’ve been supporting them buying cameras (refurbished - a Spectra being one of two - and a OneStep+) and film. But I really think they should go pretty deep making the film better. Better colors and reliability. It’s better than it was even from last year but there’s still a lot of inconsistencies and bad results. I’m doing my part buying their products. Hope they are doing theirs.
Oskar did say that they were working on something to “fill the void” of Spectra in 2021... I’m still so annoyed about it. I started shooting Spectra after it was discontinued, and most of the issues I had were with the voltage of the battery... Either way, I’ve shot one of my favourite photos from the Spectra I have... I love Polaroid, but the discontinuing just goes against the entire principles of the Impossible Project... EDIT: what I will say, my latest pack of Polaroid (Original) Film from 11/19 is SO GOOD! The film itself has genuinely improved so much from the year or so I’ve shot Polaroid Film!

Have to agree on your main points.....but Izone and grid 600....I laughed about your impossible demands :). But you have to ask how much did Impossible/PO actually pay for the rest of the Polaroid “brand”.....we have Polaroid tv’s and Bluetooth speakers here in Australia.....but really the money could have been spent on developing the film further.....including 10 shots....fixing spectra.... another brand and marketing campaign is a WASTE of money. They still want to have us photographers give them grace....and pay whatever the price....but we have done our bit and funded the impossible product...we bought dodgy film.....NOW do your bit Polaroid and stop Fxxxking around with a brand!!!!!
I really hope that when Polaroid makes more new cameras that they don’t all look like the one step. I really hate that they all look like the cheapest camera and that they really exist for nostalgia. Specifically, I really want them to make a new Spectra, because the spectra format look beautiful.

Cool man, we always use Polaroids for Christmas, something about them, in the 80s everyone wanted the Polaroid, we used Polaroid 600 for years at ThrCameraShop, it took four photos through four lens, we would through it in the light box table to develop while we ring through the sale.
I feel like Polaroid actually has some real power now to create new products. 5 or 6 years ago they were still barely hanging on financially with film sales, but at this point they have actual money to play around with that they can use to, I don't know, prototype new cameras. If they're able to create the machines or even the designs for cameras and farm out actual production to someone else, I feel like they have the ability to make new packfilm. As long as Polaroid doesn't stay a fad of this and the last decade (and I hope it does stick around!), I think some stuff you want will come to fruition eventually.
Personally besides packfilm I'd really like to see the instant 35mm slide process return, that'd be wicked cool!

I be never owned a spectra yet I’m still angry they discontinued. I think deep down I was considering getting one at some point.
Instax film is everything I wanted Polaroid to be. Sharp, vivid, and reliable. I don't even care if the development time is an hour if the shots can come out looking as good as Instax!
My humble request is just to make film that is reliable and consistent.
That's it. Start with a simple step, and this will bring more people to it and allow you to do other stuff
P30 is unfortunately out of stock at the moment :( With the current situation in Northern Italy, this is unsurprising, but still sad as I was hoping to purchase a few rolls for my personal documenting of my city (Victoria BC) during these wacky times. Hopefully my local shop has some ilford or ANYTHING in stock.
I guess there isn’t a need to release an updated sx-70 with Mint camera in the market. Sadly I just couldn’t afford to keep Shoot Polaroid stuff so I had to use Instax wide film

I modified a spectra cartridge to fit integral type film and it works flawlessly with even 10 shots in it with any of my spectra camera (including the pro cam). I don’t like the thought of them cheeping out like that. It really hurts to think they lie to us regarding the 8 shots per pack Limitation

You should talk about that ridiculous "Fragment" SLR 680 pricing for essentially a skin.
It's simply a designer product by the Japanese fashion design brand Fragment. It's limited and not meant for normal users, like the golden SX-70.

The Kodak super 8 camera you have is similar to one my father used in the 70s. I fired it up and it ran great...for about 10 seconds. The gears are all plastic and become brittle. Not much hope for those.
With the re branding came new film, the white in color film is now more crisp.... have you not noticed? Spectra is gone and won't come back... no more machine is no more spectra.
I feel your rage! I really agree with you in every aspect! The very least Polaroid should do is bring back the 10 shots per roll, or bring down the price...

Totally agree. I have a lot of fond memories of people using Polaroid cameras when I was a kid, but the new Polaroid needs to keep improving its film and lower its cost because I'd honestly love to use it more, but at the minute I kind of prefer Instax because of its reliability and cost

I think that polaroid can become cheaper when they make more film and so its good that they now make new camera's (even thought the old ones are a bit better). New camera's in store means more people that buy it and more film to be sold so the price drops and there is money to invest in other old film or those things :) so just keep on buying there film
I use the canon ivy cliq and its pretty good and doesnt need shielding from sun while printing
I was going through my Grandmother’s old photo albums and she has some Polaroids from the 80’s. Hands down those old Polaroids look way better than the new stuff. I hate the the new film, still inconsistent, ridiculously expensive, and only 8 shots.

To Be honest I've shot two new film cartridges(Branded just Polaroid) of 600 film on my sun600..and compared to my Polaroid Originals film, the new film is way more purple. I've seen one post on reddit that talked about how their film is purple and majority of the people said it was due to them being in cali (their photos were all obviously cali), however all my photos i took are in washington and where I am it's mostly been colder and I still had the same result across all 16 shots of film which is tinted purple, and the contrast I think is a bit better.

Land is dead. The ideal is gone. Land had a lot of awesome ideas over the years. His swan song wasn't too good but even then he had a dream. I don't think this Polaroid is going to cut it. I'm mad a Fuji for dumping Land camera peel apart film. Thanks for the top billing (X2)! I'm glad to help. I live through this Covid thing (God willing) I will have so much to do photography wise. I just got a Bolex H16 (57ish), in it's leather case, lenses, looking like new. I got a new (to me) large format Fuji GX617 panoramic camera. I have the Everglades in my (figuratively) backyard and so much want to burn up film out there. I working on a new darkroom. My first one in 45 years. I just have to get back to NJ to get my enlarger and that won't be anytime soon. I want to do things like lens repair and light seal repair work and start up a new UA-cam channel. It's not impossible to fit 10 pictures/pack. I figure out how to make it when they was Impossible Project. I wrote an E-mail to them. They said, it's not possible. I sent them the video. They anwser me back: "Cool! But we will never put 10 film/pack. We have to change the machine settings, price, etc...".( The Impossible film was way thicker than the Polaroid Originals film.) When they rebranded Polaroid Originals they changed the battery location, closer to the contacts, so it's impossble now, to modify the cartridge to fit 10 pictures to it...
The problem is, the battery force the steel spring up, and there is less space to the film.
One year on - they released the Polaroid Go along with a smaller, cheaper film. I think it comes out to about 80c per shot? Are you planning a quick video on it at some point? :)
I agree with your general points. IMHO they cannot forever be a nostalgia company which is essentially what they have been doing for years now. Banking on nostalgia by mostly just making variations of the classic cameras. I agree with you that they need to evolve the whole thing and push it into new territory. I realise that's a lot easier said than done, but I really do wonder how long can they be a viable business if it just stays the way it is now. They should take a few pages out of Fujifilms book......both in terms of how they handle their Instax brand, and how they used their photography and film knowledge and expertise to move into entirely new businesses.

Nice video. Anytime I try "complain" on IP Facebook page...folks always chime in "be glad they are making the film and shut up". But yes, bring back SPECTRA and make film not so TEMPERATURE sensitive. It's like they aren't even trying to improve it as of late.
Thanks for your video - first time I heard that Polaroid 600 is available again. I am interested because I have a back for this kind of film for my Mamiya RZ67 Pro. Do you know if the "new" Polaroid 600 works in those film holders like the old Polaroid film? Anyone?
My irrational wishlist includes PACK FILM. Or a 4x5 version of that instant film they make for 8x10, whichever is easier. I don't even understand why they wouldn't already have it.
In the past half year I thaught they were trying too hard to be fancy with all those different frames.
I just wanted a Cablerelease for my sx 70, but they don't have them and it seems there is none on german ebay. So I had to build it on my own.
Also I startet with the One Step 2 and also bought the Plus... the new one looks cute but why another camera with nothing new to me....but I bought a 600 sun :)
i think the big thing for me and honestly everyone is price. the reason i got into shooting 35 and other formats is because i was shocked at the price for 10 shots of 600 series, and now 20 bucks doesn't even get you 10. they're not only going to lose the battle against instax, it wont even be a close fight. get more people buying and shooting polaroid's larger instant formats at a cheaper price and then they can focus on re-releasing some of the other films
And please, don't forget the film for the Land Camera too... Please, bring it back :))) Bring it back to meeeeeee :))))
