A few days ago I went shopping at Dune Mall, Walvis bay. The only thing I couldn't find in this new and impeccably clean shopping center in the Namibian city of 85 thousand inhabitants was the car's winter tires. The prices were more or less the same, the only difference was that you can eat a Big Mac at MacDonalds and both Coce and Fanta were real and not fake...

This is not beer, but a beer drink. It should cost 10 times less because... This is crap both in taste and quality. So also in packaging 0.43 or 0.45. In Russia there is no culture of beer brewing and drinking. So our people drink all kinds of shit. Oh, and our dairy products and cheeses are not made from milk and canned food is not made from meat.

OMG 10 eggs for less than a 1$ in Russia. I pay £3.50 for 6 eggs in M&S and that's not even the most expensive eggs in London!!!
Eggs are very cheap in Russia. It would be rare to find them over $1 or 100 rubles in almost any store you go to in Russia. Of course, there are fancier brands that are more expensive.
@@TravellingwithRussell Sugar drinks in UK also very expensive. This is because there's additional sugar tax to discourage people from consuming too much sugar. Drinks such as Pepsi and Coke contain 9 tea spoons of sugar in each can. If you ask me - this is madness.
@@TravellingwithRussell On the subject of eggs - not only you are expected to pay £3.50 for 6 eggs in London, the boxes often contain broken eggs. You have to open and examine each egg - no kidding. I have to go through at least 2 boxes on average to be able to find one that not broken or doesn't contain cracked eggs.
I can buy cage-free eggs in the Midwest for $1.50/dozen. Regular eggs are $1.07/dozen.
Just to add, last year, prices were much higher for a few months. Prices reached as high as $4/dozen for regular eggs.
As a person living in Russia, I want to say that in deep Siberia there are absolutely the same stores, completely filled with products and sometimes even with a larger selection than in "Дикси"

This is really interesting to know. I have just purchased 1/4 acre in rural Australia, only just over an hour away from two major regional cities, an hour and a half from another major regional city and many small and large towns within the same distance. However, there is only one small supermarket chain that services the nearest towns about 1/2 an hour away, that has higher prices than the two major supermarkets (there is no supermarket or fuel, etc in my village). The two major supermarkets have no physical presence in the area at all. Only one of the supermarkets does deliveries to my village as well. We don't even have street delivery of mail and have to collect it from the post office! I was really surprised at the lack of services that we have, even though we aren't that far from civilisation. Interesting to hear that deep in Siberia has better grocery supplies!
I love videos like this because it shows the world how everyone is alike just trying to try to get by and trying to make sure they have a hot meal for their family each night.

In Russia, the online shopping system is very developed, many people no longer go to physical stores, for example, I haven’t been there for 9 years, it’s just that every 2 weeks groceries arrive at my home. It's cheaper due to the fact that you buy less unnecessary products that you want right now.
True. In Russia we also have different apps for grocery shopping and deliveries online from the same supermarkets Russell shows. For example I’m a person who works from home and I often order groceries online. 4 full bags of weekly groceries for me and my gf cost me around 32 USD (3000 roubles) in my provincial Russian town the other day. Today I’ve decided to make a salad using some of them: Chinese cabbage, eggs, cherry tomatoes, (black) olives, mozzarella, cucumbers all chopped and sprinkled with salt, pepper and olive oil. Bakhetle is considered one of the most expensive stores in Russia. This is a chain of stores from Tatarstan. It is in every major city. Prices there are more expensive than in regular stores, but not by much. Plus the composition of the product is more diverse. Since it includes national Tatar goods and dishes.
Yes, they have more expensive grocery stores, even with bigger variety of choices, it's called "Alphabet of taste" (or "Азбука вкуса"). What you see in this video, it's considered a budget, basic food stores.
Incredible how many different supermarket chains they have in Russia. One better than the other. All have very good fresh fruit and veg selection. Much better than what I get in London. It must be really strange to see such abundance of produce for western viewers who are used to classic propaganda about Russia featuring empty shelves. Talking of empty shelves. This is what I often get in central London where I live. And I am not even talking about awfully small selection of everything. Really bad fruit and veg, and horrific service. The famous "great british" customer service. Makes me laugh every time I hear it.
I just watched a short documentary talking about the store from "open all hours" and the classic British corner store. All of these different stores compete with each other for business, with so many choices of stores so close together. Even where i live, i have 8 different supermarket chain stores all within 1 km, or about a 10-minute walk of where I live.
your problem has a name..BREXIT
In Germany we dont have empty shelves and I have never seen "classic propaganda" about empty shelves in Russia; this is simply wrong and russian propaganda.
Soon we cook again over candels and eat our pets because winter is coming, right?🙃
@@TravellingwithRussellOMG British corner store is something you don't want to visit ever! Everything is overpriced, selections are really poor. The only way they managed to stay in business was because they'd stay open during weekend and when other supermarkets closed. And other UK supermarkets are so unpleasant. Bad service is standard. Dirty empty shelves - business as usual. Rotting vegetables - classic. Empty boxes everywhere, rubbish, shelves not stocked. Welcome to rip-off Britain!
@@jerrylee4485Not true. The problem started with Britain joining the EU, when Brussels started repressing British agriculture and fishing. Brussels eventually destroyed British farming and the fishing industry. They didn't allow British-grown produce in the market because of the severely restrictive regulations, and they gave the fishing rights to other countries in preference to the native British fishermen. Thousands of British farmers committed suicide because their way of life was destroyed. The damage isn't going to be repaired in just a couple of years.
@@edennis8578 Yes, indeed EU is much greater evil here. I've seen what EU did to British fishing industry. It is horrific. Entire coastal towns lost livelihoods, millions of people in those towns lost jobs, fishermen lost their business. And all that EU corruption and overregulation turned agriculture into toxic industry. EU discourages competition and diversity. Idiotic protectionist tariffs making industry uncompetitive and obsolete. Getting rid of EU was a triumph of democracy.

I live in Slovakia (originally Czechoslovakia), but I prefer to buy unwashed vegetable. Not because of money. Unwashed vegitable lasts much, much longer than washed one, especially potatoes. So unwashed vegetable is a very good idea. As for the prices of mineral water and beer, the situation in Slovakia is the same. Half a liter of non-alcohol drink costs about 0,70 - 1 € (1,5 liter costs 0,55 - 1 € 😀), but half a liter of a beer you can buy from 0,49 to 1,,20 €. In restaurants there are even bigger differences.
Slovakia beer 1,,20 € omg
More precisely, unwashed vegetables in suitable conditions can be stored from summer to spring, but washed ones are not intended for storage.
Dixy isn't a place you'd normally want to buy your fruit or vegetables in. Many other Russian supermarkets have better quality fruit and veg (and a wider selection) for a similar price (or even less).
@@grantchallinor5263 Hooey, it all depends on the store, not the chain. In Moscow the percentage of wretched Dixies is higher, but this is not the rule. Sometimes Dixie is the only decent supermarket in the area.

Being from Germany and seeing the prices of comparable items - even German products! -, I seriously have to ask myself which country is actually suffering more from the sanctions. o.O
The reason why Russia still has so many Western products are "grey imports". Trading companies in neighboring countries like Georgia, Kazakhstan, even Turkey, suddenly started importing way more goods than before the sanctions. Not for their domestic market, but to import them to Russia and make some extra money.

It's not an issue of sanctions, it's more of your own country's red tape and taxes are causing prices to be much higher. And generally speaking the more red tape there is, the more it favours bigger corporations who can afford accountants and lawyers to navigate it.
Bro, we need to look not at prices, but at purchasing power. Real salaries for ordinary Russians are around $300-400 per month. In Moscow, salaries are of course higher, about one and a half times for the same job positions, but prices in stores across cities are approximately the same. With such salaries, these prices do not seem low, but not too high either, you can live. In general, it would be great for you to live here, work remotely and receive your usual salary. Greetings from Samara city, Russia
I remember similar situation after 2014 when we suddenly got Belarusian sea squids, pineapples, etc, right after Russia implemented food sanctions. It was smirkworthy
Just a small note about alcohol. While you can see wine, beer, brandy and vodka in russian stores, it is prohibited to sell those to people under 18 years old. Any cashier may and must ask for your passport or driving licence to confirm your age if in doubt (this always happens to my brother-in-law, despite he is over 30 now but looks very young). And also selling alcohol is prohibited during night time, even in 24-hour stores. The particular cut-off time is determined by local authorities (11 pm in Moscow, 10 pm in most of the rest regions). While you can still find some "under-table trade" here and there, this particular law is quite strongly watched.
my bald is my passport
Even energy drinks sale is regulated, any cashier is to ask you for passport (ID) if you look younger than 16 in Moscow and younger than 18 in Moscow region
I'm almost 27 and there's about 50% chance of me being asked for my passport, because, despite my big-and-wide-guy build and me always being shaved clean, I look about 16. Another 50% is the stores where cashiers know me in the face.
But more funny thing is that there once been a situation when they asked my mother to show her passport... she was 50 at the time. 🌝
@@MMK_033 Funny thing was when I, being a big-and-wide guy too, forgot my documents at home when I were going to visit a lady. So I walked in a store, take some wine and cheese and then they asked me about my age... In the end I asked the cashier to keep the goods on her deck, went to my lady's place and returned back with her. "Miss, can you please buy that for me?". While leaving the store we all laughed at loud, me, my lady and the cashier alike. Reminded of old school days.
This was a real shock for me. Just like my local Co-op in the UK. They even had IPA and Guinness on sale along with French and Belgian beers. I could actually shop from here and never notice the difference. I have to say I'm impressed with the manner of the other shoppers too. They didn't seem to bat an eyelid at you filming around the place and narrating in English. If you tried that in the UK you would be asked to leave I guarantee you. By the way, if memory serves correctly ALL supermarkets across UK and Europe sell alcohol the same as this. I guess its just Australia that don't.
Lol, nothing wrong with filming in the UK. Its just people's personal preference.
In Russian Code of the Russian Federation on Administrative Offenses (CoAO), there's an exact definition of 'public place' - it's a place, that could be visited by anybody, that is not a protected area, so - shops, car centers, beaches, even reception hall at the Police Station. And acсording to that definition in CoAO, Article 152.1 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation and Article 29 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, anyone can should anything in public places. According to article 8 of the Police Law, one can shoot a video of the policemen, patrol service - unless they explain why it is forbidden: fro instance, it could be a special operation in action (and there should be a doc confirming it). Anyone can film an employee of any organization while in a public place. I don't buy so much at once, but depending on weight and number that price seems very reasonable.
Yesterday we bought 30 small eggs, 2l of sunflower oil, 2 400g bread, 2 small pastries, and 400g of smoked pork meat, and that was about 14USD.
And I live in a provincial small city in Eastern Europe and our prices are cheaper compared with the rest of the country especially the big cities, and our country has very very cheap prices compared with EU and especially the West.
To be honest right now we spend about 12$ per day for the basic food, nothing extra.
But here comes the big issue. Since the "sanctions" our bills got insane. This month's heating bill (we barely started the heat) was 70USD! Again, no winter, barely touching the heating.
I am afraid our winter bill will reach 200USD! And that will be on top of the rest, like power bills and so on.
And the wages here are not that big! A lot of people won't have enough money to pay the bills and the food and medicine and everything.
Yeah... it's bad. Really bad.
Lol is seems like we are under sanctions in US 😂
yep and uk is under sanctions too......funny that how we put sancations on russia but end up being the ones santioned you really cannot trust your government one fking bit...
Where is that? Where I live everything is available as it has been. What are you having trouble finding?
It's amazing to see the bottles of spirits in the alcohol section completely unprotected by security tags, which set off an alarm if you attempt to leave the store with one still attached. In Morrisons in Wood Green, London, which incidentally is a similarly pleasant shopping environment since its refit, the bottles of spirits are fitted with a security tag, locked in a Plexiglas cabinet, and you have to ask a member of staff to open the cabinet for you if you want to take one of the bottles to the checkout. Even in other supermarkets further removed from this Greater London metropolitan centre the bottles of spirits are still secured by means of a radio tag. Clearly Russia has been less affected by the cultural and moral decline that we are suffering in the west.
That's more of a british problem than anything else. I live in a western country myself with a fairly liberal culture and i can go to my local store and buy all sorts of spirits. Even entire shipping boxes if i want to. No radio tags, no special cabinet. Simply take it and walk to the register.
In Russia we have security tags, but this only applies to elite alcohol, which is also kept in a separate cabinet.
There are many video cameras in Russia, and most stores have a security service. Tags and plastic boxes are only placed on expensive alcohol. They are mainly installed on something small and in demand, such as razors. In Russia they also steal from our supermarkets.
Or expensive alcohol is paid for immediately at a separate cash register inside the store.
in Russia, alcohol consumption has almost halved, so bottles of alcohol are not the goods that will be stolen.
In Russia they don't steal from stores.
Doesn't really compare to any super markets over here, limited choices here. Great the sanctions had almost zero effect on Russia. What it did do is raise our prices in the US. Great video as always Russell. Beautiful Russia, bottom line.
No, the sanctions did not have a zero impact, the ruble is at the bottom, prices have risen for everything and will continue to grow. Salaries were small, and they remained. Real estate prices have grown very much, even in a small city where salaries are a maximum of 30,000 rubles, prices for apartments without repairs are huge, I'm talking about my small city. Mortgages have also grown, so many simply will not be able to afford to buy an apartment. It is more profitable to shoot. And much more, so to say that the sanctions did not work is stupid.

@@figgebirma7157 True.Swedish income is about three to four times as big on general terms and up to ten times bigger for the poorest people, like old pensioners and so on.
@@figgebirma7157I'd say you shouldn't be comparing prices in numbers, because there are vast differences in how those prices are allocated between goods and services, in different countries, so it's more descriptive to look at percentage. A share of income, that a household spends for food, is considered a pretty good overall indicator of economy, however some things in Sweden are so ridiculously overpriced, compared to Russia, that, say, 3k euro a month (net) lets you establish such a standard of living for a family, that in Sweden would take 10 grand, I reckon.
Also please consider that Moscow and Saint-Petersburg are by no means representing the economy of the rest of the country, those are city-states itself, where the prices can be up to 2x-3x compared to regions, especially when it comes to estate and commercial buildings.
Some consumer goods generally cost several times more in Russia than in Sweden: used cars, car parts, fish and seafood, toys, bigger furniture/household/gardening stuff (IKEA used to be one of the cheapest options in Moscow), tools, electronics,
At the same time, a lot of services are so much cheaper in Russia: medicine, education, transportation ( especially related to distances), hairdressers, bars, sport events, apartment and equipment rentals, and so on. And a lot of things are actually free (with certain rules), like camping, hunting, fishing, collecting berries/mushrooms. Thanks for sharing. Very interesting to see a supermarket in Russia. Despite the sanctions, the store appears to be well stocked.
There are sanctions and this is clearly evident not from such products that are smuggled through Kazakhstan, China and Belarus. It is now impossible to buy European and Korean cars here, instead they are now imported into Chinese ones, but they are 2 times more expensive than in China itself, planes cannot fly abroad (otherwise they will take them away, since there are very few purchased, mostly all leased) , technical inspections are no longer carried out - that is, it has become dangerous to fly, clothing brands have gone away and are sold by the Chinese instead, products (but not all) that they can are brought semi-legally through Kazakhstan, Belarus and China, while the price has increased by at least 30%, visas to Europe is almost impossible to get
They’re mostly cheap compared to U.S prices. A 20oz soda pop is now almost $2.00. Love these comparison review segments everywhere Russell. Thanks for sharing. 💯💯💯💯💯💯
But salary in Russia have not been growing for a long time, the average salary in Moscow is $1,000 (but as they say, “Moscow is not Russia”), and in the regions the average salary is $300. So, even at these prices with our salaries it seems expensive. This is all because sellers in stores are not paid extra, they often poorly monitor delays, etc., which reduces the price of goods and reduces wages

less or not at all.
But they also offer a great opportunity for the Russians
economy, into the areas that have now become vacant
to develop and produce products and goods,
where previously it was simply imported from the West (expensive).

It was interesting to see the price of wines, including imported wines which sit around A$6 or A$7 Australian dollars (correct me if I'm wrong). I used a bottle of local wine in the rural town of Mudgee in New South Wales at a Motor Inn (mini-Bar) and it was $40. It's fair enough that they tend to cost it bit more in hotels and motor inns, but I get the feeling they're slapping on even more excise on alcohol to fix their disastrous environmental policy.
Decent drinkable wines start at about 500 roubles, if you don't consider discounts. More interesting stuff starts at 800-1000, i'd say.

Prices for alcoholic bevs are tough to judge as every country has an own taxation policy with sometimes 60-70% of the price tag being taxes. That gives vastly different prices in different countries.
This almost like a supermarket in Ontario. Some of them sell beer and wine but not liquor. Recently there are scanners in the supermarket. On the package of a product there are a row of vertical lines that vary in thickness and the spacing between the lines varies. The scanners have these glass windows that usually are about 4 or 5 inches wide and about 6 inches long. You hold the package so the scanner can look at the barcode. It then it displays the cost on something like a computer screen. After scanning you place your item on a metal platform Then you scan in your next item. When you are done it may ask you how you want to pay. At some places you can only pay with a debit card ( it looks like a credit card but payment comes out of your bank account ). At other places you can pay with debit card or credit card. Some places offer you debit, credit or cash back. Cash back means the machine will give you an amount of cash that you want - $10 or $20 or whatever. Then when you pay with your debit card the machine will give you the amount of money you wanted. It all comes out of our bank account.
Recently plastic shopping bags were banned. So you have to buy a reusable bag of some kind to use to package your items. At the checkouts where there is a human being scanning in your items you may be offered a paper bag or you have to buy a reusable bag. There is a rumor that the government will soon let small stores sell beer and wine. Liquor can only be purchased at a liquor store. They are run by the government. T hey can sell wine beer liquor rum vodka etc. In Ontario we have BEER STORE. They are run by several brewing companies and only sell all kinds of beer - domestic and imported. But this makes beer more expensive. In Quebec I can buy the same brand and size of beer as in Ontario but for half the price. A tall can of beer in Ontario costs about $3.20. But in Quebec it only costs me about $1.
But don't come to live in Canada. Our prime minister just stuck us with another tax - a carbon tax. It is a tax on gasoline and diesel and propane and natural gas. It makes everything more expensive. He also raised the taxes on alcohol and cigarettes. So now 24 bottles of beer cost about $45 in Ontario. Half of that cost is taxes for the government.
So Dare to Compare. How would like to live in Ontario? A one bedroom apartment typically rents for $1900. An average three bedroom house near Ottawa, Ontario costs around $645 000! Things are getting ridiculously expensive in Canada.
The two grocery stores are I have to shop at in the US are just gross. The freezers leak and smells bad, and eggs usually are out of stock. Store baked bread is $8.00. I hate shopping at both places.
fresh bread of good quality in Russian stores is about 50 cents

Dude, Russia has *nothing* on Thailand when it comes to alcohol. I visited Bangkok and Phuket when I was 16 and my aunt (who lived there) was laughing about how literally anyone could buy alcohol. If you’re a kid and they look at you funny, just say it’s for your dad. I decided to test this out by strolling into the convenience store on her block…picked up a large bottle of beer, clinked it on the counter and waited for the cavalry to arrive and drag me away. The counter girl just smiled and said “that’ll be ‘such and such’ baht” without a single question lol. Later on during that trip, we were having a difficult time communicating with the waitress at our favorite noodle joint across the street. The staff took me and my 10 year old brother into the kitchen and had us point at the things we wanted! Two idiotic foreign kids who spoke four words of Thai combined and they shuffled us into the kitchen like we were their nephews or something. I have so many wacky stories from that one trip.
