Classic art! I started D&D withe the cardboard counters go the 90s modules, but I remember seeing the 1978 Monster Manual and now seeing this minis.... I want the troll and the couatl VERY badly. Great video!
The best petrifaction story I have is during the Lost Caverns of Tsocanth. We were using a homebrew rule where each character had a love/like/hate to further flesh out the character. This was back in 1989. The party was fighting a basilisk and the thief had been turned to stone. The dwarf of the group, after the fight was looking rather nervous an d scared. He roared and yelled "I hate Statues!" AND PICKED UP THE THIEF STATUE and smashed it on the floor into tiny little pieces. Everyone, including myself as the DM just sat there, mouths agape at the action that ended the thief forever.
I recently started a nautical campaign and in an opening adventure the PCs captured a goblin. More precisely it was the player who’s character was the cook on board ship and who was also a big sumo type wrestler who wrestled the goblin to the ground and press ganged it onto the ship. The goblin was given the position of pot boy, assistant to the cook. That evening the captain was hosting a dinner in his quarters for the officers and had sent his cabin boy (a hulking brute with bulging muscles but a pea sized brain) to go and buy chickens for the dinner. It was late in the day and the cabin boy could only find this cage of very scrawny angry looking birds, but the seller promised him they were chickens so he bought them. That evening the goblin was sent down to the hold to get the chickens. He did not return. After about a half hour with the goblin still not returned the cook went down only to find the goblin now a statue and four cockatrice loose in the hold. Eventually the cockatrices were rounded up and put in the pot and the cook rolled a 19 on his cooks utensils roll providing a very satisfying meal of cockatrice for the officers. The goblin however suffered a horrible fate. The captain ordered the petrified creature to be thrown overboard! My players all knew that cockatrice petrifaction would ware off after 24 hours but their players did not. What fate befell the poor goblin when it reverted back to flesh at the bottom of the sea I left to each player to imagine for themselves.
Had a player introduce a new Gnoll character after their original character died the session before. They ended up fighting a creature with a Flesh to Sand (stone) ability. They got separated from the rest of the group and turned into a sand statue in a giant sand pit. The newly made statue got smashed as the rest of the party got to them and they were unable to sort the sand bits to put them back together. Was a spectacular way to go out. That player started having two backups just in case after that.
Daaamn, I love every single one of these minis! Sadly these sets are always somewhat hard to find over here, hopefully eBay will prove a good friend once again Thanks for the great review! ❤️
Petropication story. One of my players lost an arm during a battle So we got himself Petrified so the Druid could cast stone shape/ Mould Earth (one of the two) and mould there arm back onto his body
Almost picked up this set but hated how big the Beholder is. I ended getting the Green Beholder from the Beholder set as a single. The others I'll have to get single of as I get the chance.
Like you I thought the previous classic monsters box of minis was awful. These look great! Even ignoring the nostalgia of having first edition artwork inspired monsters, they look suitably impressive both in size and painting quality (which i guess shows in the price point). And let's not forget that it's nice to have some different minis of the same creature. I'd love to have some of these as weird mutant variants alongside the regular versions on the table top. :)
Love seeing these classics! However, I don’t want to send WoTC any more of my dollars, so I won’t be buying these. I have several of their Pathfinder Battles line in my cart though! Thank you for all that you do.❤
No matter what I'm always excited to see your videos guys! I wonder something Theo, have you ever considered delving into some of the psychology of gaming? Honestly I think this could make for some amazing content that is as far as I know a very neglected subject. One aspect I personally could see doing well is how monsters have been used as metaphors for all kinds of things like lycanthropy used to discuss puberty or the 100's if not thousands of things vampirism has been used for. I honestly can't think of anyone more qualified than you bud!
Thanks for the review! Not sure these minis would be hitting the table for me, but they might be a nice display piece for the shelf. It’s a pity WotC didn’t make changes to the OGL, it needed it. There were definitely changes that needed to happen, but unfortunately any of that was drowned by their… unpopular decisions. Still, I don’t blame for WotC throwing in the towel with the opportunistic corporate vultures circling. Other companies were quick to jump on the wounded competition and I don’t blame companies like Paizo using the wheels of capitalism to leverage WotCs bad PR to their advantage. Anywhoo, looking forward to lots of good releases this year from Wizkids, Wizards, Paizo, Cubicle 7 et al…
As nice as this set is, I am skipping it - I am old, yes, but not THAT old. 2E was my (A)D&D, and I just find the artwork of 1E too goofy in general. I do admit the Beholder looks cute, especially when I am reminded of the Futurama episode where it made a cameo as an office clerk. :D Regarding the OGL, I am still unclear on why that whole "letting everyone use their system for totally free" thing was ever profitable for Wizards. Seems like they get nothing out of it, other than brand recognition, but seeing as how D&D is the most well known roleplaying fantasy game ever they already had that. They definitely should have done the changes with more tact, but I feel the fault lies in whatever inside man or perhaps saboteur who leaked this unfinished draft out. Certainly did a lot of damage and made them back down completely. I am not worried that this hurt D&D much - same as how the 2007 Transformers movie made the franchise big by bringing in the normies (even though quite a lot of die-hard Transformers fans hated it) the new D&D movie will bring so much money for Hasbro they will not really care about the OGL damage anymore. Paizo might try to make its own totally different thing, but with 2E Pathfinder being less and less popular - miniature and adventure releases both dropping - if they nix that and come up with 3E Pathfinder, they might as well have killed themselves.
I think these sculptors had the impossible task of being faithful to the amateuresque style of 40 year old art and still not look like something straight out of a dollar store.
I love this set! These are almost mirror replicates in some cases of what I grew up with as a kid! That other set I agree was trashcan but at least the troll had the iconic D&D look. I wonder if the Orc will have the classic pig nose or the Kobold have the old rat look, both would be awesome! BTW if anyone else is as enthralled with the old style monsters the check otherworld miniatures, trust me you will love them!

That player was probably super pissed, LOL. Time to get out the sovereign glue!

Finally a really good all around set . I love the Beholder so different then the ones I have already. Definitely will be getting this set.
Definitely a fun set! -T
That Chimera looks pretty good and the Basilisk is probably the best looking of all other basilisk minis.
The floating meatball! I like the current beholder's design more, but the goofiness is still a fun take :D
Very much agreed! -Theo
It always reminded me more like a floating sphere made of clay bricks. :D Has that weird texture.
Daaamn, I love every single one of these minis!

Some neat minis

I saw this at my gaming store and I've been waiting for your review!
Got this for Christmas from a friend. Always wanted a Beholder mini this is the best one in my humble opinion
These are much better than the first attempt at a classic creatures set!
Wow, my childhood as minis.

Yesss! I couldnt wait for this one. Great video as always❤
Thank you! -Theo
Thanks again Theo for another great video!
👍👏👏👏
I want this. I will call the Beholder Seymour.
Love it! -Theo
SKIIIIINNNNEEEEER!!!... oh wait, wrong Seymour. :) I think you meant Audrey II? ;)
Looks like I should save up for this set. It looks really cool
Man, this takes me back. I bought the MM the year it came out. Crap, I am old.
Haha! You're just "Classic!" :-) -Theo

Loved the TLOU reference.
Love these minis but I cannot stand how high wizkids has been pricing stuff. Unfortunately I don’t think this one is worth it
Best start to a vid lmao, "yeah no" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for the review! Not sure these minis would be hitting the table for me, but they might be a nice display piece for the shelf.

what's happening with d&d? I'm really confused because heaps of dnd creators are mentioning it but they didn't say what happened.
I do my best to summarize what happened here:

Never been this early
Welcome!
100$ for this
Ok the minis are cool
But there is 12% inflation in my country and a worldwide recession
What the hell wotc? What the hell
Pronounced (Boo-lay), if you're going to use the 1e mini, you've got to use the 1e pronunciation.
I… don’t even understand how you would get “Boo-lay” from Bulette…? -Theo
