- The National Trust, a beloved national institution tasked with preserving Britain's heritage, has become mired in controversy in recent years. Join the National Trust by 26 August and you can help change the organisation's misguided and increasingly political direction. You will have a vote at the NT's upcoming AGM.
Recent activities by the leadership at the National Trust have been subject of debates in both Houses of Parliament, and even more worryingly, an investigation by the Charities Commission. Increasingly, its leadership have steered the National Trust away from its core mission and into the highly contentious culture wars. This has led to huge numbers of members and volunteers deserting an institution many have supported for decades.
Restore Trust is a pressure group of concerned members who are seeking to return the National Trust to its founding objectives. Zewditu Gebreyohanes is director of Restore Trust, executive editor of History Reclaimed and was formerly head of the History Matters unit at Policy Exchange.
She joins us on the #SWYSI sofa to discuss the crisis at the heart of the National Trust and how ordinary members who join up by August 26 can help play a role in the Trust's future direction.

The National Trust has a big problem the people that " work " for them are actually volunteers and as such will not wear pride badges and will not accept reinterpretation of history..I know I am one of them...we therefore cannot be sacked..so there is hope for the future...

When I visit a country house it always strikes me how vast the wealth must have been to create and run them. To find out where the family's wealth came from is interesting and shouldn't be hidden but you don't have to like or agree with the morals of the family to find the property interesting and the visitor is free to judge the past themselves without being led by the nose or berated about modern takes on historic issues,
Not far from where I live 120 plus men and boys died underground in a pit disaster; they are still there. Their families will have been placed in penury, effectively, beggars. This country was built on coal, iron and steel and the amazing creativity genius of our native countries, not sugar or exotic fruits. Before that 'colonist' period the great wealth of the Middle Ages was produced by wool exports. Teach real history schools!

@@caahackyThe British spent vast fortunes ending slavery around the world while nobody anywhere in the world saw any wrong in it. It made very little if any money through colonialism or slavery.
I can't imagine what it's like to have dedicated oneself as a volunteer for decades and now having to go through this.
I think it reflects the arrogance of those who are re now in charge. As a charity that does not get government funding, they should be answerable to their members. I think major part of the problem is they are overseen by a Board who also don't feel answerable to either members or volunteers.

Signed up. Can't afford to join the Trust right now, but I do wish Restore Trust every success. I've been avoiding NT properties since all this nonsense started. I don't need to be lectured by social justice warriors in the country that put an end to the Atlantic slave trade at great cost to life and the exchequer (we finally paid off the bill in 2015). Like all countries that ever had any power in the world, we made mistakes, but we weren't the worst by a very long chalk and I'm tired of being told I should be ashamed of our history.

If to me, how about the SJWs focus on the 40 million slaves still being traded (mostly by Arabs) TODAY instead of the ones who've been dead hundreds of years that we can't help? Oh, yes, because if you tried marching in Arab states they'd whip you, brand you, remove bits or simply stone you to death. Funny how SJWs only care about justice when they can't be hurt in the fight. Go on, fight for gay rights in Pakistan, or women's rights in Iraq or Afghanistan.
SJWs seem to forget the west moved on but other countries are still doing it. They excuse Muslim countries because 'that's their religion' but condemn western countries for events that happened 200 years ago when neither we nor anyone else knew better. It's now safe to complain in the countries that are more advanced and don't do it, but not in those countries that are still doing it.

I’m sorry that the National Trust has allowed the disgraceful Marxist BLM movement to affect in such disastrous ways. My ancestors came from Britain. I’m proud of the British nation’s heritage! So much good came from your people. Whether it was abolishing slavery or even teaching important principles to the peoples of the entire British empire. No nation is perfect but we must stand back and weigh the good and the bad fairly and keep in mind the attitudes at the various times in history. I love my country 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 and am proud that we fought to abolish slavery and bring civil liberties to our citizens. Our nation owes much to our “mother” nation. Thanks for your program. Interesting how you skirt over the major part Britain played in the slave trade for many, many years and which itself received royal approval.
No doubt those leading the way for abolition, such as Wilberforce, would be considered ‘woke’ by today’s standard by those wanting to retain the status quo and their vast profits (of whom there were many, and who were vocal).
There would be no ‘good’ of abolition without the far worse ‘bad’ of the trade itself.
The NT is looking to preserve history because it cares about it, and if the history of a NT site stems from slave trade profits then that’s historical fact and should be shared with those visiting.
The NT is logically inconsistent. It looks at whether there is a slavery connection but ignores serfdom etc
Surely it's time for the Culture Secretary to intervene and threaten to remove funding unless the NT, and other orgs like the British Library and British Museum, return to their founding principles. The two facts which seem to be trampled all over are that the British Empire was of its time and was the first one to dismantle itself, largely under controlled conditions, and that the UK spent over a century and vast national treasure ending slavery globally. The National Trust needs to have a word with itself.

Very strange how people like Mary Beard just love the Roman Empire yet turn their nose up at the British Empire. The British Empire was the largest force for good the world has ever seen. At the very worst it was the most benign of all other coloniser (including non European) nations. I am sure that tribes/nations next door to the Zulu nation were pretty relieved when we turned up.
Restore Trust is in safe hands, which is very reassuring. She reflects the views of concerned members perfectly. I have just voted for the recommended Council candidates and wish them all every success in preserving these important properties, contents and gardens.
I would like someone within the historian community of scholars to talk about the political activists disguised as historians within the Trust with a particular emphasis on the use of moral presentism as the mode of analysis of the past. Moral presentism allows the past to be weaponised for present day political-moral activism.

What a breath of fresh air this young lady is. I wish her success.
I'm one of the many NT members who resigned after four decades because of the wokery - specifically the infamous slavery gazette and the forcing of NT volunteers to wear rainbow lanyards in properties where past owners were thought to be gay. A secondary reason was that, even though I'm now retired and visit NT properties as often as possible, the membership subscription was never good value for money. I still go to NT properties often, but just pay at the gate. Every time I do that, they ask me if I'd like to join and I tell them, at some length, why I won't. I wish Restore Trust well, but I remain convinced that the only way to get rid of the woke management is to starve it of funds to the extent that it needs a government bailout.

The home of a branch of my family was given to the National Trust. It is beautiful and is of great interest to every age group. I hope it is in good hands. The volunteers there are enthusiastic. The Woke managers must be ousted. The house and gardens are called Stourhead.

Peter, it wasn't 'murder'. The criminal Floyd died partly due to his own actions.
I’ve got to begrudgingly hand it to former NT head, Helen ‘Ghastly’ Ghosh, as I always considered that venerable institution, given its clearly defined and ostensibly inflexible remit, impervious to the corrupting influences of insidious leftwing politics…
But Ghastly proved myself and others spectacularly wrong, firstly with a highly speculative affiliation with green energy/politics - the justification being NT properties were exposed to the elements so the NT was _obligated_ to get involved. Then we had the Trust’s selfless army of volunteers forced to wear rainbow ‘pride’ badges, because LGBT+ and 18th century mansions are obviously synonymous with each other. Probably.
Regardless, Ghastly’s crowning glory remains the prohibitively expensive, meretricious race-baiting ‘initiative’ to catalogue each and every item within NT properties. The reason? Well obviously to let visitors know which vase or which filigree embellished snuff box was purchased with the proceeds of slavery. If vague memory serves Ghastly’s minions even tried to claim that said scheme was driven purely by public feedback. Like hell it was.
Though Ghastly is no longer running the once respected National Trust culpability for its current deplorable state rests firmly upon her padded shoulders. Well, assuming there’s room what with the _massive chip_ on there already of course…. :(
If there were another option, another way of seeing similar lovely properties, I think that there would be a lot more people leaving the NT. It’s virtually a monopoly.
The story of the Abolisionist movement should be put forward to counter the BLM slavery narrative.
The former would not exist without the latter. No doubting the good the former did, but what about those millions enslaved over 150 years - this should not be whitewashed

The quiet lifers allowed these institutions to be captured, as the activists show up at meetings, write new procedures, policies and get these approved and implemented.
I have been a member for 40 years. I resigned last year because of the woke diversity and decolonisation of the organisation.

Thank you for bringing Restore Trust to my attention. I am subscribed, but unfortunately I did not receive a notification until today (26th) so not able to join and vote. I was a member for 30+ years, but when I retired and income deceased, I was told there was no pensioner discount so I did not renew. I am very sad at what has become of the NT. The board should be sacked.

Like you Peter, we did not renew our membership of the NT because I really resented the attitude of the NT "management" and the use of highly biased "advisors" like Fowler. My primary question, I suppose, is how did this situation occur and why didn't the overseeing bodies prevent it?
One of the best interviews on this channel in my opinion.
There's likely going to be some people who, perhaps for ideological reasons, will question her ideas and opinions. While I was teaching she was one of my students and she was among the brightest and most knowledgeable I've had the pleasure of teaching. Like many of my non-left wing students she knew a lot about her opponents and showed sympathy for their concerns (though I should also say that many of my left-wing students were also very well informed and well-read). I'm glad to see her making a mark on society.

Agreeing totally with you and the aims of Restore Trust, I'll refer to just one of the incidents mentioned. After the matter of George Floyd and BLM, Hilary McGrady sent a message to all volunteers, telling us (and I quote), "We all need to take time to educate ourselves ..." I promptly did two things: Firstly I sent her a substantial reply reminding her that ALL lives matter. Secondly, my wife and I promptly resigned from the Trust because we didn't want to appear on the membership list any more. I thought about my position as a volunteer but have always thought of myself as a volunteer at my property (i.e. not for the Trust) and enjoy it - so I am still doing it. But now of course there is the "Mandatory" training you refer to, involving, as you say, "the sack" if not completed annually. Sigh ...
After decades of working for them we are Life time members of the National Trust, but we have never been given details about the AGM or even voted! Shocked and Horrified to hear that Clandon House will NOT be restored! WHAT ARE THE NT DOING WITH THE INSURANCE MONEY?
I ditched my membership this year , the damage is already done. Their job was to accurately preserve our heritage good or bad.

It is the highest form of disrespect and egotism for these people at the top of many of our National Institutions to take it upon themselves to make such far reaching decisions without full consultation of their members. It makes you wonder HOW on earth so many managers who clearly hate our wonderful country have been appointed to such lofty positions. Surely an absolute must is for a person at interview to show that they are in the selfless pursuit of maintaining our ACTUAL history for subsequent generations and have a genuine pride in the United Kingdom? Another great interview with a person who has both intellect and perspective.
Some aspects of the NT are good. There was an election with about 20 people wanting 6 positions. A couple of the 20 were declared woke and a couple were anti-woke. Guess who I voted for! I was delighted that the anti-woke got elected and the woke didn't. Maybe more insidious are people with woke views who don't declare it.

I like that girl and her arguments and sentiments, but I feel sad it must be a British citizen of the second or third generation of immigrants who is really concerned with this.
What an amazing speaker and she's been doing so many positive things! Most of us have now got the NT on our 'hit list' but let's do the same for the other Woke organizations, for example English Heritage and the RNLI. Both have wandered far off course and don't represent the vast majority of British people who, in earlier decades, would have supported them until their dying days.

to fight back works if you're fighting back against stupidity
The starting point is that the NT is a big charity. To put it in perspective, it has an income that is 5-6 times as much as my local district council (that's district, not parish). Like many other charities now, it employs career charity workers who are just as likely to be running Royal British Legion as they are NT. They don't need to have any passion for the charity. Unlike my district council, however, they are accountable to no-one as long as they operate within the wide scope of the Charities Acts. Whereas you can complain to various bodies if you think the council has got it wrong, even if they haven't broken any law, the Charity Commission is pretty much disinterested in anything other than a clear breach of law. So charities think they can do pretty much what they want and if you get people in power who think like that i.e. operate with poor governance, then there are no checks and balances. Sadly, this dictatorial approach is becoming all too common. I chose to cancel my subs about 15 years ago when NT decided to become a property developer, so none of this is new. Good luck to all at Restore Trust.

I joined Restore Trust some time ago. Like the NCF it is essential to support the counter to the destructive politics of an elite. 'Put your money where your mouth is' maybe an uncouth expression but we, liberals in the true sense, mustn't hang back from a surfeit of good manners. I am confident that concerted action will win.

Everything I read about Restore Trust smacks of politics. So it is neither appropriate nor respectful to accuse the National Trust of being politicised. Let’s not forget the the consequences of the pandemic and the shut down of the NT’s sites has had a huge effect on their income. Therefore do take regard to this and the state of the UK’s finances. Just stop being so disruptive. In the NT’s Council right now, we need action not activism.

At 24m 40s, Peter refers to George Floyd "murder". In fact, in US-speak, 2nd degree unintentional murder - which, in English, is aggravated manslaughter, or similar.
