  • Wokeness has conquered our institutions. The worlds of politics, academia and even corporate capitalism now bend the knee to the new orthodoxies around gender, racism and identity. In her new book, "How Woke Won", Joanna Williams explores the intellectual roots of wokeness and how this movement, which poses as radical and left-wing, came to be embraced by some of the most privileged people imaginable.
Joanna argues that anyone interested in building a truly free, egalitarian and democratic society needs to tackle wokeness head-on.
Joanna Williams is founder of the Cieo think tank and a writer for Spiked Online, The Spectator and the Times.

Regrettably whatever form woke takes is underpinned by Neo-Marxist rooted theory and education infiltrated with critical theories of the like of Paola Freire and all the rest from Marcuse, ripping the fabric of Western society. How do we push back against this indoctrination from infant school to the heart of higher education, institutions and even commercial organizations. The thread of whether BLM, etc, rooted in critical race theory - white equals racist/privileged on and on without end. I despair!

This is so true. I'm Australian and in the 1970s a factory worker could afford a modest house, maintain a car, and support a wife and a few kids. Today this takes two parents working full time, and a daycare worker, and they are all taxed by the government.

@@grannyannie2948 It was the same in Britain. This changed with the Women's Liberation movement. Women were persuaded that, if they didn't go out to work, they were somehow inferior to men.
Back in the sixties, when I was a child, my mum looked after me and my brother. She went to the local shops most days to buy fresh meat and vegetables. She cleaned the house. She visited her mother, who was crippled with arthritis, several times a week to do her shopping, cooking and cleaning. She helped our neighbours by babysitting occasionally and they did the same for her. She made sure that my dad's dinner was ready when he came home, and we always had nutritious, if sometimes boring, food to eat. She taught me and my brother to speak properly. She could do these things more or less whenever she wanted. She could take breaks any time. She could go to visit friends and family regularly and often. If she had been interested, she could have done a bit of gardening and grown vegetables, which some of our neighbours did. She was the boss of the house.
My mum did many jobs, but none of the work she did was taxable. That's why the government was so supportive of women getting jobs outside the home. If women went out to work, they would earn tax for the government. And because they were no longer at home, they would need someone else to do the jobs that they could no longer do, such as bringing up their children. Thus, nurseries sprang up, where women could leave their children to be looked after by strangers for most of each day. The people who looked after them - mostly other women - could also be taxed. What a wonderful situation for the government. They were raking it in.
Of course, this increase in the supply of labour led to a fall in the price of labour. Wages went down in real terms. My dad earned £8 a week when I was a young child. But that was enough to pay the rent, feed and clothe the family, buy us all presents at Christmas and take us on holiday every year. How much would you have to earn now to do that?
Women were lied to, and sadly they believed the lies. They thought they were going to escape the drudgery of being a housewife and embark on a new life of freedom. What they didn't realise was that they were giving up some of the best years of their lives, watching their children grow, and subjecting themselves to state slavery.

@@Pwecko That's exactly right, feminists never recognised the cottage industries of housewives. I remember growing vegetables and keeping hens for eggs. Other women did dressmaking. But we traded skills and produce, and as you say we paid no tax.
I lived through the period. My mother was very taken by women's liberation. And that first generation of married mothers got huge advantages by working. They doubled the family income, at a time when one income was sufficient. The trouble was they ruined it for the generations to come.
By both working it became impossible for families on one income to buy a house. I know it's a little different in Britain, but in Australia couples are expected to buy a house before they have children. And making housing more expensive meant less kids were born.
By the 90s most married mothers were working and the government and their building industry mates had squeezed all the blood out of Australians. They drastically increased immigration, because ofcourse immigrants also buy or rent houses. The census before last showed that half of the people living in Australia, including newborns, were born in another country or their parents were. And we compete for housing not just with them, but with wealthy foreign investors who buy houses in the same way they would invest in shares.
I know Britain also has immigration problems. When you follow the money in housing you'll discover why.

The age at which children are put into paid for nurseries is now down to two years old. These are largely staffed by women who are themselves not with their children if they are mothers. These appear to sometimes have longer hours than schools with the children not being picked up by a parent until six o'clock. This is the industrialisation of child care and turning bringing up a child into a business. This is pre-school then the process of removing the child from both parents for most of the day is continued

Piece of advice, how to easily use their own tactics against them: if you go into a shop/bank/business and see people wearing pronoun badges, you should ask to speak to the manager, ask them if they made employees wear those, and tell them you're taking your business elsewhere as these badges make you "feel unwelcome/uncomfortable/unsafe" (if they ask why, tell them they should know and them not knowing is part of the problem), and leave. Wokeness won by taking advantage of people's willingness to pander to any irrational nonsense as long as it's packaged in hypersensitive language, so use it against them. It's not like the left needed to provide good reasons to get what they want, so why should we? We need to start using their own tactics against them, even if it seems inappropriate and unreasonable.

I loved what Williams had to say about school because the situation is very much the same in Germany where I am. Kids here are also indoctrinated with Green ideology from a very young age and a lot of time is wasted on in school on "group activities" that don't yield results and the real work of learning how to read and write and do math is delegated to homework! It's absolutely outrageous. As for the general political situation - I feel homeless too. I'm a traditional leftist and I feel that the comrades I've known for many years have recently gone completely bonkers. They have become esoteric worshippers of nature. They don't see themselves as socialists anymore but "eco-socialists". While I see myself as a humanist they want to save humanity *and* "nature" without ever explaining what they even mean by that. They're arguing against economic growth while still wanting to lift the world out of poverty which I think is utter nonsense. They've also largely submitted to identify politics especially gender ideology. None of them seem to realize that their views are anti-humanist, anti-working class, misogynistic, liberal and elitist. They've also become averse to open debate which is seen as being aggressive. Woke has been acting like a virus that has re-programmed the left into hyperliberal authoritarian braindead zombies.

I should add, as well, the guys hosting Trigernometry. Over here, unfortunately, we have no such media personnel. It is instead a one horse town dominated by the CBC and other mainstream media who absolutely and without exception embrace everything woke. In fact it goes beyond that sorry state. Contrary opinion is snuffed out and those voicing it regarded as some form of knuckle-draggers. Our Prime Minister has taken to saying of persons in opposition to his policies on vaccine mandates and peaceable protest, ' they are all homophobes. misogynists, xenophobes and Islamophobes." Forget about free speech, rational discussion and debate. Peter Whittle hits it out of the park time and time again.

My form tutor did this test on my class over 40 years ago. In our case, he tapped the table a number of times and then reported a deliberately wrong number.
I am proud to say I was one of only two in the class who refused point blank to go along with the concensus because I KNEW I was right. He then explained the test to us all as part - oddly enough - of his RE class. In his case, he was explaining how brave the early Christians were to defy the concensus of the time.
I am an atheist now but I have never forgoten that lesson in pyschology. I have always asserted my right to think for myself. It has not always done me any favours but at least I remain true to myself.
“The mob believes everything it is told, provided only that it be repeated over and over. Provided too that its passions, hatreds, fears are catered to. Nor need one try to stay within the limits of plausibility: on the contrary, the grosser, the bigger, the cruder the lie, the more readily is it believed and followed. Nor is there any need to avoid contradictions: the mob never notices; needless to pretend to correlate what is said to some with what is said to others: each person or group believes only what he is told, not what anyone else is told; needless to strive for coherence: the mob has no memory; needless to pretend to any truth: the mob is radically incapable of perceiving it: the mob can never comprehend that its own interests are what is at stake.”

Joanna seems rather kind and caring. I watched a video of her dated a few years back as she held a talk on the absurdities. Anyway, wokeness is an American invention that is simply historical identitarian vengeance encoded in 1964 Civil Rights Legislation that has effectively become America's 2nd Constitution. You can learn about it in Christopher Caldwell's The Age of Entitlement. Politics is not downstream from culture. Culture is downstream from power. Culture is a top down phenomenon and Joanna and the rest of the older generation have been told a story since they were little that bottom up revolts were what made a difference. Unfortunately, that simply is not the case in history and it never was. But it does tell a good story that makes people feel like they can make a difference. The reality is that a small group of minorities in any institution who can organize and seize power can impose their will on a disorganized minority. The reason? These people just want it more than the majority. While regular people have jobs, don't want to risk, just want to grill, sip tea and enjoy family time, the elites spend their time thinking about how they will centralize further power to ensure they maintain a buffer from any challengers to their status. So unless normal people who are against this nonsense can get counter elites to combat this, it will be with you for the forseeable future. Oh and for the parents who don't know what to do, it is a difficult position to be in.. However, you have to ask yourself a really important question. Are you willing to sacrifice the innocence of your children to these monsters? That's the tough question you need to ask yourself. And yes they are monsters. Anyone who has the mentality to think of a scheme that targets the innocence of children is a monster. And now those monsters are in positions of authority.

    1. small government or large government(ie. To what extent do you want the government interfering with the right of individual and/or family)?
    2. Nation (ie. borders and soverignty) or globalist ...recent David Starkey talk asks the question "are we all the same or are we different?" Which achieves the same point. 3. Are we responsible for our own actions or victims of society? This sets the style of legislation and punitive arrangements for society...

I prefer not to use the term "woke". I prefer to call it all what it is, in practice: a post-modernist distortion of Marxist theories, and bringing in the inherent solopsistic dishonesty of post modernism which, in short, is essentially a denial of factual, evidential and even scientific reality where it comes into conflict with their ideas. This is especially the case if denying all the achievements of the enlightenment and modernism, is the goal. Because post-modernism seeks to use dishonest, deceptive language and word salad, as well as psychological techniques (as opposed to evidence, reason and argument) to sneek its zeitgeist into the prevailing thinking. An example of Marxist theory being distorted is Critical Theory, which - like Critical Theory - features oppressors and the oppressed, based on the bourgoisie / prolitariat (elites/ working classes, basically). CRT redefines the oppressor as white men, and the oppressed as ethnic and identity minorities assembled in a spectrum of victimhood depending on intersectionality characteristics (skin tone, sexual identity, able/ disable bodied, and so on). One thing is for sure: it is largely the left > left of centre who adhere the most to these ideas, which include a desire to systematically erase/ hide/ vilify our history - which contains information and learning in an evolutionary timeline - which helps us understand how to got to where we are today. And we have puritanically thinking people (which strikes me as being highly narcissistic) who appear to genuinely believe that they have the most morally correct opinions/ views ever devised. Therefore, anything and everything else must be quashed! It is an appalling, arrogant, narcissistic, naive and deluded way to think

And he IS a bright boy. The school is working towards SATS , which is nothing to do with where a child then goes for year 7. The level of education being dished out is utterly appalling and sub- standard. It`s disgusting , and I say that as a fairly recently retired Primary schnool teacher. I did a lot of private tutoring in recent years and it`s terrible that parents are so worried that they have to pay for tutoring outside school hours to fill in the gaps missed. Private tutors , usually retired teachers or otherwise , are considered to be the "enemy" by the school system. Well this has been coming for at least 20 years and if they were that worried they should have done something about it. One definition by Marx is "from each according to their ability, to each according to their need. Another by Kropotkin is "distribution without calculation". And if you go down the route where the Soviet union was a communist society (though no bolshevik ever thought their country to be communist), do you think Stalin was woke, or Molotov or Khrushchev or Brezhnev?
It does us no good to use words in a crude way that is only meant to be pejorative. Woke is a particular phenomenon, and if anything, it is a current in American liberalism. I wonder if Joanna is missing a group of woke-promoters in her breakdown of the various groups.
There are older people with a history of liberal left or centre left politics whose political reference point might by 1997 and the Blair vs. Major election. They still see the choice as between 'progressives' on the one hand and 'the Tories' on the other. They haven't really gone over to woke philosophically, but they regard woke as primarily a new, modernised, linguistic formulation for the same progressive ideas that they supported perhaps 20 years ago. This is why they experience suprisingly little cognitive dissonance caused by the fact that some elements of woke require a 180 degree turn from what they believed ten or even five years ago.
They vehemently reject any opposition to woke, and leap to its defence, because, in their frame of reference, opposition to woke can only come from 'The Tories' and the inheritors of John Major's view of Britain. It's much easier for them to pretend not to notice anything about woke that they dislike than to align themselves with people who they have been opposing all their political lives. Perhaps there's an element of living in fear of 'becoming right-wing'.
To be sure, there is some overlap between this group and Joanna's group of cowards. However the group I'm talking about are mainly as they are due to failure to pay attention and the sunk cost of years of political activity.

Peter, Rafe, Emma & Elves another great interview. Peter can you have a chat with David Kurten. I've missed the Peter & David double act in the London Assembly.

What a super-sensible lady. The voice of the rational silent majority...which sadly stays as a silent majority........

Completely agree with everything apart from the bit about Jamie Oliver. Say what you like about his intentions, but one fact remains: the government isn't doing enough to tackle childhood obesity and the health of our children is hugely important, especially in a cost of living crisis. At least put discounts on food with some nutrition to get some healthy grub into our kids. I don't think JO is saying don't put discounts on food (people are acting like he's advocating for people to starve), isn't he saying don't put discounts on junk food? The man has a point. I'm not keen on a nanny state but if we are to have one anyway, let's at least 'nudge' the consumer in the right direction by putting discounts on semi-nutritious foods. It's seen to be elitist to judge what food people buy to feed their children, yet it's totally fine to discount junk food and expect that "the poor" desperately need their precious junk food to get by. To me, that assumption is insulting to people who may very well want to make a few new/better choices and just need some money off to make a few changes. Some children's diets are shocking, so let's forget the class war and do what's best for the kids. Does anyone else see my point?
