It's just weird to hear about who was trying to block Rock's push. Most of the time, you hear it was Shawn and Hunter, but on Rock's own TV show, he recalls it as Bret being the one who was doing it. (The wrestler who's name was changed, but would come out on TV with a broken leg)

I think the issue was…it wasn’t so much that Vince couldn’t pay Bret,, it was the precedent it would set. Guys like Shawn would demand Vince match his salary otherwise he would most likely leave to WCW once he was able to. Unbeknownst to many, wwf was just months away from the attitude era boom period

    • @bobbyjohnson9409

Vince could pay Bret. Dude was paying Mike Tyson a couple of million just to show up a couple of dates in January-March of 1998 but he couldn’t pay Bret in November 1997? I think the real life fight with Bret and Shawn was the beginning of the end for Bret. You can tell Shawn gave Vince an ultimatum because once Shawn went home after the fight but then returned, the hart foundation were put to the back burner and Shawn was pushed as the top heel. Shawn never wanted to turn face in 95 and 96 and preferred heel. He was also miserable and wanted to leave and go be with Nash and Hall in wcw but Vince said wcw wouldn’t know what to do with him as a character. Instead Vince put Shawn with Hunter who was his only friend left from the Kliq. Shawn also hated Bret’s contract because Bret was making twice as much as Shawn. It seemed after the real life fight, all of Shawn’s problems were taken care of and all of a sudden Vince couldn’t pay Bret. Bret should have sued. Vince was always pretending that he’s right. He wasn’t right. Even if Bret wasn’t worth the contract, the fact is ya still signed him. Whether he’s worth the money or not. It’s a legal document

@@bobbyjohnson9409 exactly…I read Shawn’s book and Shawn was making $750,000 while Bret was making $1.5 million and Shawn flat out said to Vince “you think he’s twice as good as me?” Or something to that effect. Michael landsberg interviewed Vince about this dispute and I think Vince outright lied (shocker) , that he wouldn’t accept ultimatums…Shawn was Vince’s boy toy and would give him all the breaks in the world

Didn't Hall and Nash used to laugh at Bret being the $400,000 champion? They indicated that Bret would rather have the world title than make more money. Either way Triple H owns a huge chunk of WWE and Michaels was making seven figures so I'd guess both are doing fine. Nash and Hall both had favored nations clauses in their contract at WCW so whatever Bret made in WCW they made the same at least.

I think he was in the 20 year deal already by the story he was telling here (1.5 million a year vs. HBK's "guaranteed" 750k). that contract was frontloaded so he would make more as an active performer and then would transition to like an ambassador role a few years later. but then Vince cried broke and that altered the dynamics of everything leading up to Survivor Series.

Did/does Bret have some sort of bad blood with Austin? Or does he just really not like their WM13 match, which Austin credits with elevating him as a face? I seem to remember him talking dismissively about Austin in a similar (if not the same) interview about how Austin was not used to blading and had to (sin of sins!) let Bret do it to him; and now in this interview Bret is lamenting how he had to turn heel after only doing to Austin "what he promised to do", though to be fair he could just be trying to get into character to recall things better. - Bret was the lowest drawing WWF Champion of the 90's, averaged only 3,703 at the House Shows (even Nash did a whole lot better with 4,464), holds the distinction of main eventing the lowest drawing WWF PPV of all time (IYH5) and drawing the lowest crowds a WWF Champion ever drew at the Saddledome, Maple Leaf Gardens, Meadowlands and MSG. In fact, Bret drew so horrible in Calgary that the WWF dropped the city from their House Show circuit for over two years. And heck, even his WCW Nitro debut did 0.3 rating points less than the previous shows.
      - Owen only drew once: After he dropped from the arena roof. Suddenly everybody was his biggest fan, suddenly everybody thought he would be World Champion. LMAO. Bret vs. Owen drew a pathetic 6,000 at the Saddledome, in their fucking home town.
      - Neidhart was even worse. Bret vs. Neidhart did 4,000 at the Saddledome.
They were all non-drawing vanilla midgets and their careers were constant examples of massive failure.

4:25 This is why I thought that Brock Lesnar would not care to wrestle Gunther for the IC Title or why John Cena did not care to go over Theory for the United States. But if Hart is referring to the difference in pay, then maybe it doesn’t matter today because last year Lesnar was paid more money than the WWE Universal Champ (Roman Reigns) and the World Heavyweight Champ (Seth Rollins), COMBINED.

Triple H has done so much damage to the business over the last 24 years. Held down so much talent. Everybody kisses his ass these days but forget how many people he buried to solidify his position on top. His matches are trash too, he literally walked thru all of them. Overrated and only got as big as he did because he had Shawn and Vince's ear. Marrying Stephanie only kept him on top when so many others should have had that spot in the 2000s.

Little more to it than that. The main reason was the fact Shawn basically told Bret he wouldn't do for Bret what Bret was offering to do for him. That, combined with all the other crap, is what led to Bret refusing to do the job. Ppl have said a lot of things since then and WWE has put a lot of propaganda out since then (like saying Bret was gonna take the belt to WCW which was complete bollocks). But it was really just a personal issue between Bret and Shawn. Ppl forget, there was plenty of time to get the belt off Bret before Survivor Series and he had said repeatedly he would have dropped the belt to anyone else. Don't buy Into this story that WWE "had no other options"...yes they did. Vince just turned it into a pissing contest and didn't wanna come up with something that would have avoided the MSJ.

I don't Blame Brett ❤ for feeling down on his luck. He did get pretty Screwed 🔩 in his career. He lost Family members & there was some hate 😡 on the guy from most angles. We just Feel like he should also see the good that he's got out of it all. He was the Best paid 💰 wrestler at a time back to back. He got remarried 💍 with a hotter younger gal. He gets a chance to retire & enjoy his Family. & For a Wrestler 🤼 Thank GOD 🙏 hes Still alive especially coming from the Old School 🏫 Era.

This right here is why we have the trash WWE we have today. Triple H and Shawn began their takeover of the company, with Vince allowing it 100%. Bret was superior to them both as a wrestler and as a creative mind. By refusing to trash Rock, Bret had a target on his back that last all the way until Survivor Series. After he left, Shawn and especially Hunter took over and made WWE in their own image. Where only their breakfast club wins championships and the actual talented wrestlers are jobbers throughout. Not having Bret around killed WWE forever. Yes, Austin and Rock kept things afloat, but they didn't last, either. Hunter and Shawn continue their garbage ways of running the company to this day.

Dude what are you talking about? It’s fine if you personally don’t like it, but numbers don’t lie. WWE and NXT are doing better in ratings and mainstream attention then it has in over a decade. There has been a noticeable quality improvement in the company overall since DX took over. WWE is finally getting their next boom period, and if you can’t see it you’re just in denial. I personally prefer the Ruthless Aggression era over the Attitude Era, and I like the New Generation era, but I’m not going to say the Attitude Era is garbage, or that the New Generation was a great time for them creatively and success wise.
