- A college student claims her professor attacked her but the ensuing "he said, she said" battle and manipulation from both sides leaves Benson and Stabler unable to fully believe either.
Season 6, Episode 8 'Doubt': When a college student (Shannyn Sossamon) claims assault and her professor (Billy Campbell) claims it was consensual sex, Stabler and Benson find themselves in the middle of a "he said, she said" battle. The argument indirectly reveals that Stabler has become separated from his wife. Stabler initially believes the professor but changes his mind when he sees him manipulate his daughter (Carolyn Miller). Benson initially believes the student but changes her mind when she stages a suicide attempt to gain sympathy. Unsure of where blame lies, they make their way to the courtroom to hear the jury's verdict.

Both are pretty hard to believe but when she accused Stabler of SA, that went out the window
And admitted lying about it on the stand.
Also, the incident of near suicide
The episode is well crafted. Yes, she "lied" about Stabler but the way the scene is played made him look bad. She was confused, hurt, didn't personally knew stabler and he accidentally touched her chest. Also, she didn't formally accused him, she only mentioned it to her lawyer.
I'm not defending her but the episode really tried to make it clear that nothing was clear at all.

So, she took all those pills because she knew Benson was coming, accused Stabler of harassment, claimed her grandmother was dead to get out of a DUI, and no doubt a lot more. Yeah, this lady is a psycho.

After ALL that, which the DA KNEW, why did she prosecute, when he had a plausible defense? It’s not the greatest defense, but stacked up against all her lies. Why the fake suicide attempt? She knew he got indicted. If he hasn’t been, I could see the attempt maybe.
He’s not exactly a saint, but he’s been punished, fired, losing custody of his daughter, for something he probably didn’t do.
This lady must have ever heard ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’ story when she was young. Or thought it only applied to boys. Some day you might need your credibility.

They never showed the jury verdict in this episode, but if I were sitting on that bench, I'd vote not guilty--not because I don't believe he did it, but because the case is so muddy that there's no way to tell what happened.
Right. This is a case where the beyond-a-reasonable-doubt standard wins it for the defendant.
Remember, "probably guilty" is legally not guilty.

@@giosy0072 That was the point: to metaphorically put us, the audience, on the jury. They presented the facts and the surrounding circumstances, but since it ultimately boils down to he-said-she-said, who do you believe and why?

This was the episode where we didn't hear a verdict in the ending. This was an episode where the audience voted as well as decided whether the verdict was guilty or not guilty. As I recall, "Not Guilty" got more votes than "Guilty".
I googled it and it says 60% voted Not Guilty, 20% voted Guilty and 20% voted Mis-trial (not enough information).

In my opinion, the man was innocent. It was consensual. And his daughter, she was protecting her father and she didn’t wanna go to jail for sending a threatening note to that girl. Up until this day, the verdict is still unknown and I hate it!

To me, looking at this, jury would have to go not guilty. She accused any male she came into contact with and faked a suicide attempt. As the saying goes in the legal world, “if they’re lying about 1 thing, what else are they lying about?”
I remember when i first watched this episode as a kid and that ending just waiting to hear the verdict and level of anticipation. I was so shocked not having a resolution but learned some valuable lessons nonetheless. 😅

@@fullautomatic555 Alan Tudyk! I can't believe I didn't recognize him when I watched "Serenity" in theater. I wish I hadn't though, because I'd never seen Firefly, and seeing the movie and knowing how everyone ended up pretty much killed the show for me (pun intended). It's a shame because I know and love some of the actors in it! Especially Nathan Fillion!

I have known enough mentally unstable women who like it rough to give him a not guilty verdict if I was on the jury. When she accused Stabler it told me she is an attention seeker.
A horrible assumption to make just because they bring it up. That assumption makes it needlessly harder to speak up for the real victims at all.
It's the biggest cliffhanger episode of Law and Order SVU there is when I first saw the episode it was very confused and little bit frustrated it's a very big ambiguous episode that either people will love it or hate it for me I'm in between.

I still cannot stand the ending to this episode. For those unaware, there were supposedly two endings to this episode, which the audience could vote on, and that ending would be chosen. I have not seen this ending but I want to know what happened because over a decade and a half later I still cannot figure out who is telling the truth! It irks me that this was how they decided to handle this ending!

This was based on a Canadian Professor back in the 80s. Dude was found guilty, after years fighting it he self-terminated and then the supposed victim came clean.
No prior boyfriends or girlfriends brought in as witnesses to testify as to whether she liked it rough or liked to play mind games? That scene where she clearly expects Stabler to kiss her, despite claiming to have just been raped, that tells us everything we need to know about her credibility.
I found both suspects untrustworthy but once she made those claims against stabler AND took those pills when Benson was coming to her, she lost all credibility to me
I remember watching this episode and kept jumping back and forth of who i thought was telling the truth.
This would be a difficult case. I’m not sure there was enough evidence to convict beyond reasonable doubt. I’m sure he was a jerk but I’m not sure he committed a crime.
I legit thought that was Ryan Reynolds for some reason

I like how this episode gives you the full jury duty experience choosing which side is guilty based on a situation entirely focused on He said She Said. I’m honestly with the majority where I think the father is innocent, his accusations of manipulating credibility in his favor weren’t as extreme as Myra’s and the thing is The father had a lot less to loose than Myra did, why try to tank his life along with stablers? Which was the real nail on the coffin in my opinion she only gave up on prosecuting stabler cause he wasn’t nearly as vulnerable as Ron was.

I get what they were going for, but this episode seriously pissed me off.
They never formally showed us what the verdict was in this episode did they?
They did a poll for the viewers after this episode aired to give their verdict on the case. Nearly all of them voted *Not Guilty* yet these are the same group that were outrage on the outcome of SVU latest episode.
Left it up to the viewers to decide by way of online poll. Guess the producers overlooked one little problem: reruns.

@@Renegade2786Here is the thing, to convict in criminal court, it needs to be beyond a reasonable doubt, so far we have a woman who claimed Stabler sexually assaulted her, when we know he didn’t. She claimed her grandmother died just to try to avoid charges on a traffic accident. She staged a suicide attempt once she knew her ‘attacker’ was charged by the grand jury and when she knew someone would be coming to rescue her. No way am I convicting anyone with all that reasonable doubt. It’s not even close to the recent episode. I you could convict with all that evidence against her ability to tell the truth, then you must have a pretty low IQ.
The fact they didnt actually made the message of this episode much more impactful. I didnt understand such perspectives and challenging tasks of the jury and belief until i saw this episode as a kid. I always expected clear cut answers.. especially from tv and when i didnt get it..i really thought hard

That case was so muddy that even jury didn't cnow who was telling the truth in comments was said that series website they had poll to cnow how people would have voted and vote was not guilty
That's the point. We, the audience, are supposed to stand in as the jury and cast judgement.

SVU needs a better prop tech/manager. The vile email shown on the computer (and later printed up) is one waiting to be sent. It was created on that computer. You can see the "Send" button on the top left. It wasn't a received email.
Not just SVU but L&O during its early foray at having computers. There was a scene where det curtis was chatting with a suspect.... IN A NOTEPAD. The internet was truly a novel thing back in the day.

Ugh I hate uncertain ending like this! I know in real like stuff is uncertain all the time and very few things are black and white but I don't want my entertainment to do this to me too! Give me a clean cut bad guy!

Ask Benson on finding her in the bathtub, coincidentally while knowing she was coming over to tell her about the indictment? Have previous relationships of the woman coming forth and telling their experiences with her?

Sorry for the insistence on that "Omori" comment, but since this is a series about lawsuit, I bet the best answers to my question will be found here.
So I repeat for those who know "Omori". Sunny and Basil are minors, I get that. But they are also mentally unstable, and faking Mari's suicide could be seen as a level of organization and planning similar to sociopathy (I know it's not the best example of a disorder, but I'm not 100% versed in the organization level of damaged minds)
Plus, is something like mandatory counseling and house arrest an option ? Realistic ? Does it have to be juvenil or institutionalization only ? Can a lawyer use the "neglectful parents" bit as an argument ? Maybe even Aubrey's bullying (I can see her owning up to it in an attempt at making up) to justify the time they took to reveal the truth and the idea in the first place ?

I never once questioned the guy. Believed him all the way 'til the end. The woman 100% lied about being SA'd by him, about being SA'd by Stabler and just to play the victim some more, she overdosed because she knew she would be found in time anyway. She was an attention wh0re through and through.
