- Exploring Colonial Williamsburg at Christmas is on our annual to-do list of must-do experiences each year. A piece of Earth with a historic backstory of Christmas tradition that's gone on for centuries.
The old Colonial capitol of Virginia and its picturesque setting can easily catapult end-of-year visitors' searching for the Christmas spirit into a cheerful and joyous realm of holiday happiness.
The city accents the magic of the season through spectacular events, captivating sights and sounds, and wintertime activities you'd expect to see on a vintage Christmas village postcard.
Last year we did a complete wreath tour up and down the Duke of Gloucester Street. This year, we decided to just take in some leisurely exploration off the beaten path. Honing in on a few of the not-as-often-seen handiworks crafted by some of the city's most talented holiday wreath designers.
We'd also catch some glimpses of the ice skaters at the Liberty Ice Pavilion staged at the heart of DoG street, and gladfully listen in on the live street musicians performing their best rendition of Christmastime tunes in busy Merchant's Square.
This holiday outing would take us past the Colonial homes of well-known 18th-century residents of Colonial Williamsburg, including George Wythe, Robert Carter, the mayor of Williamsburg, and others.
To cap off our afternoon walk, we'd drop into The Christmas Shop to see the amazing Christmas ornaments and collectibles handcrafted by locals from the area.
We invite you to come along with us, to see everything we saw on this cool, yet beautiful December day, just weeks before Christmas day in Colonial Williamsburg.

The posting in the center of the reef on that one door was a court order for the estate of William Ruth to pay the plaintiff the amount the late Ruth promised the plaintiff along with the court cost. It included a small summary of the court case in the beginning of the notice.
Thank you for sharing. . .we are originally from southeast Texas and our son is stationed in Virginia and he visited the Merchant Shops today and in his words it was like stepping into a Hallmark Movie set, it was beautiful. Wish we could be there. Experiencing it through pictures and seeing it through his eyes was wonderful & such a sight. The candy shops, the live music & instruments played, children laughter and people of many gather was a sight. The ice rink and holiday lights were amazing even in pictures. Wishing he was home but sure am thankful he surrounded by much to remind him of home and evenso experiencing beautiful new adventures wherever he goes. As he walk in historical town and I recalling from History books and sharing history with each other (I'm quite a history fanatic). Just beautiful.

Osage orange. The wood is virtually rot proof. Tree has thorns and is used for hedgerows.

Spent Christmastime for many years with my family in Williamsburg. My parents would stay at the Inn, and we stayed in various colonial houses ...these are some of my most cherished holiday memories. We also had friends connected with the "Foundation " who lived at that time in the Robert Carter home. To celebrate a Christmas meal with them in that home was nothing short of magic.

Thank you...our friends were the late Don and Mary Gonzales, with Don serving as Executive VP of the Foundation. They were wonderful and are truly missed. I retired to Europe where I've been the last 25 years. If you love Christmas, then I suggest you come to Germany where in my city of Leipzig, they have been celebrating the Christmas Market since 1458. In many ways, Colonial Williamsburg is also European... that's certainly why it never disappoints.
I know the squirrels there aren't very shy. I wonder if they bother the fruit on the wreaths?
