    I think cancelling smaller competitions because of traveling issues is different. they're investing billions of dollars into the Olympics, and it's in Beijing where there are way more travel options

  • @abir547

    I'm not concerned for next year's Olympics at all. I believe China is focusing entirely on making sure everything will be ready for every sporting event they will be hosting and hoping they will be able to have some crowds. So cancelling Cup of China and offering another country to host it isn't alarming or worrying if we look at the overall picture.

    I'm sure that the Cup of China is being canceled because China doesn't care enough about figure skating in order to host it. Besides Sui/Cong in pairs, there're no Chinese singles skater or ice dance couples that have a chance of medalling at the Cup. On the other hand, China could bag the most amount of medals at the Winter Olympics due to Chinese athletes having extra time/access to the Olympic facilities. Come hell or high water, China is going to host it on time. Also, (please don't come from me because I am of Chinese descent) but you can get away with a lot more when you're an authoritarian government. If you need to construct 20 temp housing buildings in a span of a month, you don't need to need to go through the process of informing and properly compensating people (they didn't do in 2008 and that was a larger affair). The Japanese government had to answer to the protests and growing concerns from the Japanese public over the 2020 Olympics.
    Sidenote: I'm really excited to see Karen Chen's Butterfly Lovers' program at the Olympics. Part of it was filmed for On Ice Perspectives youtube channel and it's gorgeous.

    • @l.s4450
      @l.s4450 2 роки тому +3

      Hihi just to explain a bit more about cancellation, China has very strict quarantine rules for those coming into the country (14~28 days indoor) and it will be a big issue for athletes who won't have any access to training premises and equipment. Beijing would probably be prepared by then (hopefully) with a whole new set of plans to keep everyone save while holding the events well but Chongqing (where Cup of China is supposed to be held) probably wont be prepared, especially with the surging cases across the country :D

    People ever counting out Alysia Liu as a flop just for growing into her body is humiliating. I just don't understand how people can think she's just done because she doesn't have a 13 year-old's body anymore. She's an athlete and an artist and she's been growing and changing for years now. Absolutely loving getting to watch her develop and support her on her journey

    • @WES6666

      no people are counting her as a flop because many people pointed out at the 2019 us nationals that her technique is very flimsy and most likely wont work after her body develops. They also asked US figure skating not to brand her as a the prodigy and US skating ace because if she doesn't survive puberty and doesn't fulfill those expectations it can be very damaging to her and would send a lot of hate towards her. But everyone ignored her and used her for publicity cause US figure skating really want their new star.

We really weren't hating but I feel like most of us kind of saw it coming. But like I said USFS is so desperate for their new skating sensation they don't even care what happens to her. Hate to say it but unless Amber Glenn surprises us in her GP assignment/s, she's not really one of the girls they're considering to send to Beijing if the games happen. She's certainly improved but her 2nd place finish at the last US Nationals was mostly because Mariah Bell and Alysa Liu had some major errors in their programs that made them drop in the standings (if they skated clean then Amber definitely would've been 4th). I also don't think she's really backed by the USFS as much as the other ladies are? Which y'know sucks but at the same time I guess I don't blame them for showing more support for their more consistent skaters with international experience compared to Amber who placed 7th/8th/9th in multiple US nationals and the few international competitions she's gone to

But she has to come back like she really wants it and give it everything she has, or it's never going to happen. And no matter how unhappy you are with your performance, you stay in the kiss and cry until your scores are announced and you take it with grace. I'm more disappointed about that than her skating. Amber is never going to be chosen for the team unless there are problems/injuries with enough of the other ladies that are really in the running and she makes on heck of a statement on the Grand Prix. Alysa speed and skating skills have improved dramatically. I don't think you have watched her skate recently. You just write comment without watching her performance. She is promoted because she is the best American lady skater. Period. Alysa can spin way much faster than Mariah and Amber. Mariah Bell skating skill has regressed a lot recently (much slower and cannot land any jumps at all). Amber Glenn and Gracie Gold are very inconsistent. It's extremely rare for Amber to have a clean skate (like National Free program) Karen Chen has low technical content and inconsistent (always fall on jumps). Bradie is solid and consistent but she doesn't has triple Axel. Alysa has triple axel and she manages her NERVE very well compared to other American skaters. Alysa can be the top in American lady skater world EASY. However, Alysa is still miles behind Russian and Japanese skaters. Alysa can win gold at National but impossible at Olympics.
