  • The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition has an EPA range of 260 miles. In this video test the real world range driving like a normal person (OK I drive quickly) and see how far the vehicle can actually go driving over mountain passes in 65 degree weather. The GT Performance Edition has 480hp and 634 lb-ft of torque. 0-60 is quoted at 3.5 seconds.

    Wind resistance is the biggest range killer when driving on the freeway. The power it takes to overcome the air increases with the square of the velocity. As the range meter in this video showed, decreasing speed just a little bit disproportionately increases range. Since small changes make such an impact it really does matter whether you are driving into a headwind or have the wind blowing the direction you are travelling.

      Yep. Driving over 70ish consistently kills range.

    Just recognized how slow 70mph are. I normally hit 75 to 80 mph when accelerating to go on the Autobahn. How can you drive long distances like that and stay awake? That must be a real challenge.

      When I was stationed in Germany, I loved driving on the Autobahn. I could make real good time traveling between Heidelberg and Ramstein every day for work. I went back about 2 years ago on a business trip and was saddened to discover that many sections of roadways that were previously unrestricted now have speed limits.

      @@dewrus2153 Yes. There are a lot of restricted areas, especially around big cities. Happily I have still a lot unrestricted bits around my area. Thanks to the Waze App you can enjoy more "unrestricted" Autobahns. ;-) Local knowledge helps also. - When you see a Limousine like a E-Class, 5 Series or similar with two rear view mirrors or a kind of "GTI Antenna" on the rear, it is time to check the limits. - Just tips for your next visit here. @@marcnobel3938 - Thanks! I do hope to get back. My wife and I were stationed there in the 1990's...it was the best military assignment I had in my career. We lived in Sandhausen just south of Heidelberg and I drove to Kaiserslautern (Ramstein AB) every day. After a year or so, we moved west to Grunstadt for rest of our tour. I spent a lot of time on A6. We are thinking of going back on a trip for our 25th wedding anniversary next year. I hope we can get there. If we do, we'll be sure to try A31. Cheers!

      70mph is pretty slow. That's the speed limit in California, but in the central valley, traffic frequently moves much quicker. Overall our roads are not developed to support the speeds you lucky Germans can drive on the Autobahn.

    That’s so funny, I also bought my Mustang Mach-E at South Bay Ford, and yes no markups! Only markups they were charging were on F-150 Raptor and Shelby GT500. I will soon be putting in my order for a GT Performance. The range for the car is now 260 which will be tested on a 1097 mile run I will do (645, 5 days of less than 25 miles of driving then 435) in June/July on I76 in PA. The hills and mountains, while not as bad as what was in this video, will tests that range number considering the hills in that state. I hope to be able to do a 178 mile run on one charge. I may also make a video.

    • @revmatchtv

      You'll easily do 178 on a single charge. I do better than that in hard canyon driving. I did about 7-8k of vertical in my test. I'll do some more tests under different conditions. I'm sure I can exceed 260 if I go easy.

      Update: I did not get my car until August 2022 so I was not able to do that trip but I will be doing it soon: NYC to D.C. area then to western PA then home a few days later. I did do other trips: to Philadelphia then D.C. and back soon after picking up the car, Boston in January 2023 then to Maine in April and I can say that using the heater and uphill driving can affect the range and efficiency a lot: as low as 2.2miles/kwh to as much as 3.1 (to Maine during a warm 90F spell). Recent updates have made the car better with occasional 4's (warmer weather above 75F no AC.) with a confirmed range improvement of up to 280 miles (confirmed at 277 estimated at 98% charge).
      Daily commute: I go from an elevation of 119 feet to my job at 364 with 2-400+ foot hills on the highway (70% of my drive) so, depending on speed, going ranges from 2.4 to 3.3 and returning has been as high as 4.3 and rarely below 3.3 at about 65-70 MPH with the numbers dropping lower by a bit over 72.

    When test driving a Mach-E this summer, I was surprised by how "in your face" the battery level was. It makes sense in regards to not letting people mistakenly run out, but it almost created range anxiety where I wasn't predisposed to have it. Getting that full-height warning at 23% and 48 miles of remaining range really reinforces the lack of infrastructure available to EV drivers. If you select "OK" to dismiss that warning, how persistent is it in warning you again?

    • @anthonyc8499
      @anthonyc8499 2 роки тому +4

      The low battery warning is adjustable. Owners can choose 50 miles or down to like 20 miles.

    • @revmatchtv
      @revmatchtv  2 роки тому +3

      As Anthony says here in the comments you can adjust the range warnings to be about 50-20 miles. The pop up pretty much the same as a low fuel warning on a gas car. Once you make it go away, it comes back again when you hit the next level.

    I’m way to impatient to tolerate EV. New tech using solid state has to be available before I make the unavoidable plunge. Stopping and hanging out for charge is a no go.

    • @revmatchtv
      @revmatchtv  2 роки тому +1

      The infrastructure isn’t there yet, and these are still early vehicles. However, at least in California charging is pretty accessible. Newer batteries will undoubtably improve range.

    • @scottjentsch
      @scottjentsch 2 роки тому +3

      When you can fill up at home while you sleep, etc., you're actually saving time over having to stop for gas. People who think it only takes 5 mins to get gas haven't actually timed it, especially at a Costco gas station on a weekend. It can easily take 20-25 mins to fill up a gas vehicle. For the average use case of a vehicle charged overnight and used to commute daily, the time saved by overnight charging will outweigh the extra time needed to charge when road-tripping.
      EV infrastructure is improving every day, while the gasoline infrastructure isn't changing at all. When that crossover point hits the sweet spot for each of us is going to be different, but make no mistake, the era of gasoline is ending. 100+ years of infrastructure isn't going to be replaced overnight, but it is happening, bit by bit.

    • @revmatchtv
      @revmatchtv  2 роки тому +1

      @@scottjentsch I don’t really agree with the 20-25 minutes scenario. If I’m on a road trip, I’m not stopping at Costco, I just want to keep traveling. However, 99% of my driving is in my hometown and yes I can charge overnight which eliminates gas station trips around town.

    • @scottjentsch
      @scottjentsch 2 роки тому

      @@revmatchtv Sometime I'll have to time how long it takes to stop and fill up. I used the Costco example as an extreme, but it happens to me fairly regularly that I have to wait 3-4 cars back in line. If I were to forgo the discounted option and go across the street, I could more than likely pull up to a pump right away. However, I'll bet that it's still 10 mins from beginning to end. If EV fast charging can get down to 20 mins, I think that's pretty good. Is 10 mins better? Sure!
      The scenario where EV is really hard to justify is for someone that cannot connect to a charger at home or at work, when the majority of the charging is being done while you're doing other things that you would do no matter what type of vehicle you have. Those people are going to be waiting longer to be EV adopters, but they can also apply pressure to their apartment complex and/or employer to provide EV charging options. Imagine if every street light had an outlet that you could plug into and pay a reasonable rate for the electricity...

    • @FlatPlaneCranky
      @FlatPlaneCranky 2 роки тому

      @@scottjentsch while I agree with you in city use the electric makes sense, my business requires me between three states bi weekly so the 200-300 mile is a no go. I’d be losing a lot of time (time is money) recharging when I can just take 5 minutes to refuel. So again I can’t make the inevitable plunge until the battery charge time technology changes. I won’t make the jump until something a lot more drastic than charging station infrastructure happens. It has to be new electric storage technology before I can even consider it. Even if fuel prices double I would still have make more money by faster refueling than waiting for a battery to recharge. So it’s still a no go. I’m very happy that there is still a choice to use both, and it’s nice to know the the oil oligarchs around the world will be reduced in the future and that the earth doesn’t have to be prodded and depleted of it’s natural non reproductive resource. Lithium is also a terrible resource and certainly not a long term solution as it’s horrific to our earth so it’s still not the answer but hopefully a step in the right direction.
