Some of our evenings gives us lipsticks sunsets, but i really long for those rare August evnings. I´m really feed up with the cold winter here in the cruel northen part of Sweden. Helps to listen to John.
One of the very best Artists of All Time..... a musicians musician.... I played a bunch of Hiatt for neil young when he hung out in Santa Cruz in the late 70's...john wasn't new to him , but I remember - he really dug Hiatt's great lyrics....
I saw John and the Goners play two years in a row on the "Bring the family" tour and the "Slow Turning" tours. The dates were the last nights of each tour and they were incredible. This was in San Diego at a place called "the Baccannal". It was a small club in a strip mall but I saw some great shows there.JJ Cale is another memorable performer. The Beat Farmers would play there every new Years eve and Country Dick Montana would hand out "The Beat Farmer's Almanac" which was all hand drawn.
Saw John back in '85, doing a European tour with Loudon Wainwright III. A rather desolate tour by two rather desolate artists, though loved by the 50 or so people who attended the shows. I remember talking with John after the show, he was happy that 'Warming up to the ice age' gave him one more record contract. Then came 'Bring the family' and everything became different for John. Two years later, I saw John & The Goners in shining armour doing this song in Haarlem, Netherlands. Still love it!
You might already be aware, but the amazing Bring the family album is said to have been rehearsed and recorded in only1 week!!! Jesus, some no hope "popstars" of today can spend longer than that contemplating percussion loops! Just goes to show that there's no substitute for real talent - if you have the songs and the performance, it actually ain't that hard!! Love you John and this track especially!
Thank you for putting this on you tube! I realy like this concert, saw john Hyatt in Tilburg (holland) in 1987 or 1988, don''t know the exact date. but I think it was this line up. Saw them again in this century. Still a great band. THNX
Just brilliant. I'm not one of those people who constantly complains about my generation's music, but I definitely missed out on the best stuff. 80s might not have been the best decade but still much better than today.
Hi John, this is Scooby live from RSVPed promotions. I saw you in my hometown of Boston Massachusetts many years ago and you were truly amazing. I still love your music.
wow...thanks for the post....i saw the first "bring the family" show in Columbus, OH...John is an amazing artist and I will proudly say that i have done the lobster dance with him and lit his cigarette...HA!
Hey Suzie, I am happy to see a new generation can be touched by a goosepickeling song like this. I always crie when I hear this song and it is allright with me, since the first time I heard it. Thank God, or who or whatever you call it, for sending us John Hiatt
hey, Sonny Landreth playing slide on a Telecaster! I've seen him play live a number of times, both by himself and with Hiatt, but never seen him play a Tele...... great players can get a great tone and make soulful music on pretty much any instrument, even if it's decidedly outside of their usual comfort zone. !
My man Sonny Landreth! Saw him last year at the Rams Head in Annapolis. I love Ry Cooder, but Sonny puts on an awesome show. Watch him and Derek Trucks play "Congo Square" on a UA-cam video. Awesome!
thanks so much for posting. for too long there we were stuck with the Daily Planet's awful version. That fellow with the slide ain't Ry Cooder, but he sounds great.
Yes, that's Sonny Landreth. Being a slide player I have to say that Ry Cooder is probably my biggest influence and he did the solo on the original recording but when Hiatt started touring I guess Ry wasn't available or whatever and Sonny had some big shoes to fill and I'm my opinion he filled them nicely. He and Ry have two pretty different styles so I don't feel one is better than the other but Sonny is quite an innovator on slide guitar.
@suziebadoozie Totally agree with you, I'm sixteen years old and I love this kind of music. This music has a message, which the music nowadays not even has. In my opinion music nowadays sucks, especially MTV and such crap. Like rappers, they want to show you how much money thay have, maybe to make your jealous or something.
And they are all synthesized and autotuned, and their music is forced into our heads instead of letting us choose what we want to listen to. John Hiatt is amazing and I wish people would listen to good music like his
@DaleRobertSzyms If you like Ry Cooders slide, don't forget to check out "Jesus on the Mainline" with Moula Banda, Catalyst Santa Cruz, '87. He plays a sick slide on a Mandoguitar.
John Hiatt is a criminally underrated singer-songwriter!
Jeah and Sunny .. was Shy!

It is not only a slide in the live-version. On the record it's Ry Cooders brilliant slide-playing making the song. Brilliant song.
on my worst day all i have to do is listen to some sir john and i can make it
Love the way his voice takes on that Aaron Neville character.
Bring the family is a masterpiece. One of the best American albums of all time

Classic! Slide is fantastic add-on for this live-version, very much appreciate the post.
Awesome...
They agreed so much about the slide that they went back in time and brought in Ry Cooder to do it on the album version.
Thanks to my man Hector for putting on to this song and John H.
thanks so much for posting. for too long there we were stuck with the Daily Planet's awful version. That fellow with the slide ain't Ry Cooder, but he sounds great.

This song reminds me of the sierras.

Is that Sonny Landreth on slide guitar ? Mark Knopfler rates him as one of the worlds best slide players !
