I hired an amazing estate company after my mother died. Their handling of it all took a tremendous weight off my shoulders. Some people let me know what they purchased and sent me pics of them using it or displaying. Since I couldn’t possibly use or keep all of my mother’s things, it made me feel good that someone else was enjoying it. My mother is in my heart and in my memories, not in her things, so please feel good about helping Alex Trebek’s family.
I remember watching a feature about Mr. Trebek actually purchasing the remaining stock of a local hardware store when they went out of business, including all the original storage bins and boxes, so that's why it was so well organized!
I could tell from some of the containers that were in the garage that they came out of a hardware store. The big box stores (Lowe's, Home Depot etc) are killing the local hardware stores.
I am donating all of the Adsense revenue this video makes in its first month to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. I saw some online discourse when the sale was happening debating the ethics of opening up his house to the public for this type of sale. However, there were six months between his death and this sale, so I imagine his family were able to choose what would be important to them, and with a house this expansive, a lot of things pile up that would be too much for one family to keep. While I’m not sure that having the entire house open to the public was the way to do this, I’m glad that his fans had the chance to give his possessions a second home and be able to truly appreciate where they came from. I tried to be as respectful as possible of the whole situation in this video, so please also be respectful in the comments.
I disabled ad block and let the ads play entirely for the good cause. Of course I muted the speakers and looked away, but the advertisers don't need to know that.
I also attended Alex Trebek's estate sale, twice. I enjoyed it so much!! In this video, you showed some of his jerseys. I was able to purchase the blue, NHL Toronto Maple Leafs jersey with the matching pants. I just came across your video, and was wondering if you'd be interested in hosting a raffle for it? I know that so many people all over the world, would've loved to attend.
This is the exact sort of thing I would want from a famous person's estate sale - something useful that I will use and then tell people "hey! I did that with a thing [celebrity] owned!!"
I’m glad that you went to the sale and told us about it. I would have gone, too (if I lived in LA!) But I agree with you that it was sort of sad. I have been binge watching your channel for a few weeks and finally splurged on a Ravensburger puzzle and omg it was so much better than I was expecting! Never going back to those cheaper puzzle brands. THANK YOU for giving me a new obsession haha!

I've always wondered what his garage would look like cuz I had seen an interview that he had it all organized and stocked! I'm so happy you were able to help me see in it 👏🏽 and I'm so glad you found something you already had your eye on! I'm sure, like you said, Alex would be so happy someone found his item a new home that had a purpose! Can't wait to see what you create! I think it's great you went. I also think it's wonderful that the family didn't just keep his stuff around left to sit. They gave people the opportunity to take a piece of his life to cherish. I could totally see the look on the Uber driver when he saw you and your saw. Hilarious! what a story he had to tell that night at dinner with his family! But you got it done!
This was a really cool story, Karen. Can’t wait to see how you use that saw. I was not much of a Jeopardy fan, but certainly was saddened knowing that we lost a cultural icon when Alex passed away. I think he would have gotten a big kick out of knowing where his scroll saw went.
Such a fun video. I can just see you hauling that saw out of the house and into an Uber. Looking forward to some cutting my own puzzle videos. It has to be really strange to think of people walking through your relatives home. But can you imagine trying to figure out what to do with all that stuff? Thats a huge house and it looked like he had a lot of memorabilia. So its nice knowing that people who cared about him were able to enjoy his things. Plus they get some $$ as well.
@@TassieLorenzo probably because there was so much stuff it was easier to just let people come in instead of packing it all up and moving it. One less step, and less money out of their pocket.
I went to OttawaU (The university that Alex Trebek went to) and he spoke at my graduation. I got to shake his hand as I walked the stage and he seemed so nice and such a calm presence. My whole family cried when they heard the news, we're all such big fans of the show.

@@lazyhomebody1356 I knew Alex was a hockey fan. Not surprising since he was Canadian. It's the Blue Jackets specifically I was commenting about, since I'm a Blue Jackets fan. He grew up in Ontario and worked in California, so that was unexpected. The jersey has a logo they haven't used for 15 years, so presumably he had it for a while.
As someone who has also bought a scroll saw for $80 when an old shop was being cleaned out, I hope you get lots of use out of yours! Lack of adequate space and ventilation means I haven't begun to learn how to use mine, but I know it's there for when I finally have a decent setup. I know there's some great youtube turotials to get started!
I told a young friend of mine who, FYI, actually competed on Jeopardy and in the Tournament of Champions, that I felt like going to an estate sale was felt like desecrating a grave. She said that you should not look at it that way. She said you should see it as giving those things a new life with a person who will care for them.

Some tips for you Karen on cutting that puzzle piece: Practice A LOT on the Scroll saw before attempting to cut the puzzle piece. Using a Scroll Saw takes practice. You can also buy the 'manual' version of a scroll saw, called a 'Coping Saw'. Because your turns are tight on the puzzle piece, you will need a THIN blade in either case - short distance between the edge of the teeth and the opposite 'smooth' edge.

ohh I just had an idea!! this is a MASSIVE undertaking but how cool would it be if you/your community was to design a 200k (or some multiple of 200) piece puzzle? That could be your 200k sub special! though thats super short notice. Soo.. same thing but for 250k or 500k!

I meant as in doing the design, something very "Karen Puzzles" specific, and having some puzzle company print/make it for you! Given your standing in the puzzling world, I would think high quality brands would be happy to partner with you to print/manufacture a design!
As odd as this is, it’s a very interesting thing that many of us wish we could have first hand insight into. He lived a legendary life, and it’s good to see his belongings find good loving homes.
So is the the first scroll saw of a very extensive scroll saw collection to compete with your dads anvil collection 🤔 I love how respectful you were, I agree opening up the house is a bit of a privacy infringement I am sure there could have been another to execute the sale of his items.
I got two of those saws, one Dewalt 21" and one Excelsior 16" ! I use to make Jigsaw puzzles from 200 to 800 pieces! All by hand. There are a lot of amateurs who still make wooden puzzles... ! I don't know why you never made a video of modern wooden puzzles ! G.P.
7:07 I am completely disillusioned. Alex Trebek's thorough organizational system repeatedly labelled "Coarse" threads as "Course." If he made a Your/You're error or pluralized with an apostrophe-s to make a plural, I would never get out of bed again. Of Coarse, its possible that their was some hired person in charge of organizing his tools and fasteners and its there mistake.
Anyone else confused why the discourse is that this situation is weird? Estate sales are super normal where I live. Someone dies, their loved ones go through and find what they want to keep, and then they open up the house because selling everything is a huge burdensome project. I don't know why it is weird because its a celebrity that passed away.

That sounds like a weird and cool experience. I'd feel like I'm trespassing :P But I think it's nice to have that kind of sale. All those things still in good condition, they deserve another home with people who would continue to appreciate them :)
Wow great!! I'm trying g to do something for the children in my area come June. I am seeking donations for children puzzles for this challenge. I have two age group 4-9 & 10-14 . I am hoping to creating puzzling interest in the future generation. Not to mention all of the academic assessments it involves. Thanks
Honestly I thought he'd live in a much more expensive house. I know someone who bought a house for 25mil and they're not famous at all. Obv not all rich people are famous, I just thought the people who were mega famous would spend more on stuff like that.

That sounds like a weird and cool experience. I'd feel like I'm trespassing :P But I think it's nice to have that kind of sale. All those things still in good condition, they deserve another home with people who would continue to appreciate them :)

Wow great!! I'm trying g to do something for the children in my area come June. I am seeking donations for children puzzles for this challenge. I have two age group 4-9 & 10-14 . I am hoping to creating puzzling interest in the future generation. Not to mention all of the academic assessments it involves. Thanks

Honestly I thought he'd live in a much more expensive house. I know someone who bought a house for 25mil and they're not famous at all. Obv not all rich people are famous, I just thought the people who were mega famous would spend more on stuff like that.
